George Coulthard was on the staff of the Melbourne CC and accompanied Lord Harris's 1878-79 side as an umpire, even thought he was only 22, standing in the only Test of the series. At Sydney, in the match against New South Wales, he was at the centre of a riot when he gave Billy Murdoch run out, leading to an ugly pitch-invasion. Although independent witnesses said the decision was close but fair, NSW demanded his replacement, claiming he was incompetent. He played only six first-class matches, his last in 1881-82 when he made his only Test appearance for Australia, making 6 at No. 11 and not bowling. Within two years he had died of consumption.
