Glenn Maxwell fell just short of a century but many of his Victoria team-mates appeared still to be in BBL mode as they struggled on the first day of their Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales in Sydney. The Victorians were dismissed for 218 and at stumps New South Wales had moved along to 2 for 128, trailing by 90 runs, with Scott Henry on 41 and Ben Rohrer on 27.

Scott Boland and Clint McKay each had one wicket after Nic Maddinson fell for 4 and Ryan Carters for 42, but Victoria needed more success with the ball given they entered the match sitting last on the Shield table. More than anything, though, they needed a greater batting display; Maxwell was the only man who made more than 30 as Trent Copeland and Sean Abbott led the Blues' bowling effort.

Maxwell made 94 off 95 balls before he was caught in the deep off the bowling of Steve O'Keefe, but by then he was running out of support and he was the last wicket to fall. On the same day that he sold for more than A$700,000 in the IPL auction, Aaron Finch showed that he still has trouble in the longer format, caught off Bollinger for 7, and Cameron White (29) and Matthew Wade (10) were others fresh from international cricket who failed.

Incredible finish to day two with the bluebaggers taking 3 for zilch in six overs! Have the blues finally turned their ship around? Good to see Patterson amongst the runs.
