Scorecard
A career-best 178 not out from Ryan Carters and a century from Kurtis Patterson pushed New South Wales well ahead of Queensland on a rain-affected third day at the SCG. New South Wales began the morning at 3 for 234 and finished it at 6 for 386, with a lead of 118 runs; Carters had batted through the day and was still there at stumps alongside Sean Abbott, on 20.
The fourth-wicket partnership between Carters and Patterson was worth 212 before Patterson was bowled by James Hopes for 126. It was the second first-class hundred for Patterson, who was in his 13th match and had burst onto the scene in November 2011, when his 157 at the age of 18 made him the youngest man to score a century on first-class debut in Australia.
Moises Henriques (21) accompanied Carters for a 54-run stand before he became the maiden first-class wicket for offspinner Cameron Brimblecombe, and Peter Nevill was caught off Cameron Boyce for 5. Carters scored 67 in the shortened day's play, passing his previous first-class best of 154 and confirming him as one of the young batsmen to watch on Australia's domestic scene.
