The Cricket Australia XI again found themselves out of their depth in their second Matador Cup match, crushed by Victoria at Hurstville Oval in Sydney. Having been skittled for 59 by New South Wales in their first game on Monday, the youth side were dismissed for 79 by the Victorians on Wednesday, with James Pattinson causing much of the damage.
John Hastings picked up two wickets in the first four overs of the match, before Pattinson ran through the middle order to scuttle any hopes of the CA XI posting a competitive total. Pattinson finished with 4 for 18 from his ten overs and spinner Jon Holland picked up the final three wickets to finish with 3 for 17 from four overs.
Only three batsmen reached double figures in the CA XI innings; captain Will Bosisto top scored with 21, James Bazley made 20 and Matt Short scored 10. The innings ended in the 28th over and, not surprisingly, Victoria cruised to their target with little trouble, reaching 81 in the 12th over.
Aaron Finch struck eight fours and one six in his unbeaten 45 from 30 deliveries and Cameron White finished on 14 not out. The only wicket to fall was that of Marcus Stoinis, who was caught by Short off the bowling of Matt Dixon for 21.
The nine-wicket thrashing for the CA XI follows on from their 279-run loss at the hands of New South Wales on Monday, in what was the biggest margin in a List A match in Australia. The CA XI was added as a seventh side to this year's competition in an effort to provide exposure for young players.
