Born on December 12, 1876, at Medway, Kent. A middle order batsman, he was one of two colour sergeants who played for Hampshire in 1911, the other being Harold Forster. Sutcliffe played one match when Hampshire were said by Wisden to be represented "by a very weak eleven" for the trip to Worcester in August. Sutcliffe, batting at seven, scored 16 and 8. Worcestershire won comfortably by eight wickets. He was later commissioned with the rank of Lieutenant, with The Royal Marine Light Infantry, Portsmouth Battalion, Royal Naval Division, and died at Gallipoli on July 14, 1915, aged 38.
