Richard Stroh was educated at Potchefstroom Boys High, a school which in recent times churned out the likes of Gary Outram, Mike Hayward and George Myburgh. Stroh was a member of the South African Country Districts side which competed in the 2004 ICC World Cup Qualifying Series held in South Africa. He scored brisk centuries against both Botswana and Rwanda in that tournament and in 2005 captained a combined Gauteng-North West side against the visiting Zimbabweans. He was the Standard Bank Student Cricketer of the year in 2003-04, an award he receiveda at the SA Mutual & Federal Cricket Awards.
