Peter Trego has all the qualities to be a top-notch performer. He gives the ball a hefty thump and is a brisk seamer who is often used at the death in limited-overs games, but has never quite fulfilled the natural talent he clearly has.
One of his stand-out performances was the 54-ball hundred he slammed against Yorkshire in 2009, as Somerset chased 476 to win at Taunton. Trego later called it "the innings of his life" and he is another player who improved under the leadership of Justin Langer.
He is a former England Under-19 representative but has never pushed the selectors hard enough for further honours, although he was picked for the Hong Kong Sixes in 2009. Trego has also needed to move around, but has settled back where he started at Somerset after brief spells at Middlesex and Kent.
Trego made his Somerset debut in 2000 after first appearing for the second Xi in 1997. In 2002, he made a first-class best 140 in a tied match against West Indies A. He failed to find a regular game at Somerset so went out to Kent (only one first-class match) and Middlesex (234 runs at 26.00 and 16 wickets at 36.00 in seven matches) before coming back to Taunton in 2006.
He came back with a bang, smashing 135 against Derbyshire and a year later becoming the leading allrounder in county cricket after 836 runs at 52.25 and 33 wickets at 34.27. In subsequent seasons he has put in consistent performances, averaging in the 30s and chipping in with useful hauls of wickets. But in 2012 he excelled with the ball, taking 50 scalps at 32.18, regularly taking the new ball. He was named the PCA's most valuable player that season.
His career has seen several brutal batting displays, none more devastating than the 147 from just 89 balls he bludgeoned against Glamorgan in 2010.
