Grahame Clinton was a sound but unspectacular opening batsman who started in Kent but, unable to secure a place in the side, after six seasons moved to Surrey in 1979. He soon found his slot there, and coach Micky Stewart said he "formed the backbone of the innings; the platform from which our strokemakers can play". While that might be slightly unfair, Clinton certainly had a limited range of strokes, mainly deflections on either side of the wicket, but he expanded that slightly as his career progressed. He retired in 1990, and that was his most successful campaign, with 1292 runs at 46.14. His other claim to fame was that he was taken to hospital in 15 of the (then) 17 first-class counties he played on.
