Henry van der Spuy's career extended over almost two decades either side of the Second World War but during that time he played only 32 first-class matches, primarily for Western Province in between spells with Griqualand West and Orange Free State. A middle-order batsman and offspinner, his best period came in his first two seasons with Western Province when he scored all three of his hundreds and took the bulk of his wickets. In 1936-37, only two bowlers took more than his 24 wickets, and he chipped in with a career-best 121* against Transvaal. The war robbed him of his best years, and after a season with Western Province in 1946-47 he dropped out of the game before returning - with little success - for Orange Free State in 1950-51.
