Born in South Africa, Michael Neser moved with his family to the Gold Coast at the age of 10 and emerged in Queensland's Under-19 side in 2008-09. He has good pace, the ability to move the ball and is a very handy lower-order batsman. Neser made his state debut in 2010-11 in the Sheffield Shield and Ryobi Cup and although injuries prevented him from becoming a permanent member of the Queensland side, he enjoyed a strong 2013-14 in the shorter formats, collecting 10 BBL wickets at 19.90 for the Adelaide Strikers after being Queensland's equal top Ryobi Cup wicket taker with 10 victims at 27.40. He was called up to the Australia A squad to take on South Africa A in four-day matches in August 2014. He also played in the 2016 Australia A series against India and South Africa A.

Neser continued to perform for Queensland as a pivotal part of the 2017-18 Shield title, but he also played a vital role in the Strikers BBL title in the same season. Those contributions did not go unnoticed by the Australian selectors. Neser was called up to the 2018 ODI tour of England and made his ODI debut at The Oval, playing two matches of the five-match series. He went on the Australia A tour of India and performed admirably in the two four-day games leading to a call up to Australia's new-look Test squad for the two-Test tour of the UAE against Pakistan. He did not play but returned to have a huge Shield season for Queensland. He made 481 runs at an average of 43.72 with five fifties at No.7, and took 33 wickets at 23.03 including a career-best 5 for 15 against Western Australia. During the 2019-2020 season he was a regular member of the Test squad but that maiden cap remained elusive.
