Cec Buttle joined the Somerset groundstaff in 1920 as a medium-pace bowler who could move the ball away from the right hander, but only played twice for the county - in 1926 and 1928 - and failed to take a wicket on either occasion. He gradually began to help Harry Fernie, the Taunton groundsman, something he said limited his on-field opportunities. Wisden said "he was always available to help out at the nets, and he often fielded as a substitute in Taunton matches". In 1946 he took over as head groundsman at Taunton, remaining there for more than 25 years, and also umpired in a few of the less important first-class matches against the universities.
