Champions League Twenty20 - Group A

Delhi Daredevils v Perth Scorchers

Delhi Daredevils won by 3 wickets (with 3 balls remaining)

All right. All is in readiness. The tablecloth still on, but it still looks dry, and the forecast isn't horrible either. Under overcast skies, out come Herschelle Gibbs and Shaun marsh to face Irfan Pathan and Morne Morkel. One slip in place for Gibbs

1.15pm "How can Dave Warner not get a game in a T20 side. He is T20." I hear you, Andrew, but he has too many things going against him: he is an opener (DD have Sehwag, Jayawardene already), he is an overseas player (you can play only four of them), he is not the captain (Jayawardene is), he is not a No. 3 (Pietersen is), he is not a middle-order batsman (Taylor is), and he is not a bowler

1.05pm Now for the implications of this match. It is more important for Scorchers, who need to win to stay alive. If Scorchers win, it will be their first success of the tournament. If Daredevils win, though, they give themselves a great chance to make it to the semi-finals

1pm Mahela Jayawardene has won the toss, and Delhi Daredevils will bowl first. Jayawardene admits to a little bit of pressure being the last team from the subcontinent. They have retained the XI that beat KKR nine days ago.

Perth Scorchers have remained unchanged too

12.50pm The table cloth is well and truly on in Cape Town, but it is dry at the moment. We are expecting a start on time unless it starts raining in the next 40 minutes. Salutations

0.1

Pathan to Gibbs, no run, slight shape back in, defended off the front foot

0.2

Pathan to Gibbs, no run, wide length ball, not much swing, mis-times the drive, and ends up pushing this back to Pathan

0.3

Pathan to Gibbs, no run, no swing this time, and Gibbs is beaten outside off, playing for the swing

0.4

Pathan to Gibbs, no run, short of a length, moving in a little, gets an inside edge onto the pad. Square leg is quick enough to keep them in their creases

0.5

Pathan to Gibbs, no run, nice swinging delivery. On a length, just outside off, moving towards off and middle. Defended back

0.6

Pathan to Gibbs, SIX, and he has broken the maiden in style. Pathan has bowled a good over, but the last ball is too short, and he plays the pick-up pull over deep square leg. There is a fielder there, but he has taken him on

End of over 1 (6 runs) Perth Scorchers 6/0 (RR: 6.00)

Morne Morkel to bowl

1.1

Morkel to SE Marsh, no run, short of a length, on off, left alone

"I'll be very surprised if Warner doesn't make it on the field at some stage. He is an outstanding fieldsman. Expect to see Morkel take a break at some point and Warner come on!" Yes, Ryan, especially after someone has bowled his quote

1.2

Morkel to SE Marsh, FOUR, edged but safe. I am not sure Marsh will be playing the Tests later this year, but here is a pointer to that contest if he does. Marsh follows a shortish delivery, edges it, but wide of first slip

1.3

Morkel to SE Marsh, no run, nearly edged again. Short of a length, outside off, goes for the cut, is beaten by extra bounce

1.4

Morkel to SE Marsh, 1 run, tucked away off the hip for one

1.5

Morkel to Gibbs, OUT, South African to South African. Timbahhhh. Gibbs clears his front leg to try and upper-cut, but the ball is not short enough, and he plays it on. Has somebody said something to Gibbs on the way? Gibbs doesn't look impressed as he walks off, and is forever looking back at the Daredevils huddle

HH Gibbs b Morkel 6 (6m 7b 0x4 1x6) SR: 85.71

Simon Katich in. Morkel to two Australians who might not play the Test series later this year

Pathan to SE Marsh, 1 wide, wide down the leg side. No swing back from that far

2.2

Pathan to SE Marsh, no run, short of a length, no room, punched back to Pathan

2.3

Pathan to SE Marsh, no run, stays short of a length, and keeps it tight. Marsh is cramped again, and he pushes this to leg

2.4

Pathan to SE Marsh, FOUR, pitches it up, and strays too far down leg. Marsh helps himself to a four past square leg. Nice flick

2.5

Pathan to SE Marsh, no run, wide half-volley, but Marsh has bludgeoned it straight to mid-off

2.6

Pathan to SE Marsh, no run, back to short of a length, give him no room, and Marsh defends off the back foot

End of over 3 (5 runs) Perth Scorchers 16/1 (RR: 5.33)

3.1

Morkel to Katich, no run, Katich moves across, finds a full ball, but can't beat cover with the drive. He will count this as a miss

3.2

Morkel to Katich, 1 run, opens up the body, and slashes, but that will fetch him just a single to third man

3.3

Morkel to SE Marsh, no run, nice flick off the pads, but he can't beat the diving Taylor at square leg

Square leg goes back now

3.4

Morkel to SE Marsh, 1 run, full and on off, pushed with soft hands towards mid-off. Gets a single

Round the stumps to Katich

3.5

Morkel to Katich, FOUR, Katich is no power hitter, but he finds a way here. Moves across, gets inside the line of a shortish ball angling in, and plays the pick-up over short fine

Morkel goes back over the stumps

3.6

Morkel to Katich, no run, tries the big hoick, but is beaten by the angle of the delivery

4.1

Pathan to SE Marsh, 1 run, slower ball, Marsh recovers well to slow down his attempt at a flick, and instead pushes it to mid-on for one

4.2

Pathan to Katich, 1 run, dabbed away to third man for a single

4.3

Pathan to SE Marsh, no run, short and wide, but he misses out. Skids away from him

4.4

Pathan to SE Marsh, 1 run, slower ball again, Marsh waits and waits before pushing it into the leg side for one

4.5

Pathan to Katich, no run, slower ball again, Katich is initially looking for a big hit down the ground, but ends up pushing it to point

4.6

Pathan to Katich, SIX, one thing Pathan shouldn't be doing is, bowl short. Twelve of the 20 runs he has conceded have come in sixes off two short deliveries. This is the second of those. It's short with no sting, and Katich cuts it over cover-point

Umesh Yadav to bowl now

5.1

Yadav to SE Marsh, no run, starts with a 86mph swinging yorker. Marsh just about keeps it out

5.2

Yadav to SE Marsh, no run, full and wide, nearly a yorker, played to cover

5.3

Yadav to SE Marsh, 1 leg bye, short of a length, beats his pull, but he takes a leg-bye off the thigh pad. Not short enough to pull

5.4

Yadav to Katich, 1 run, low full toss, pushed wide of mid-on for one

5.5

Yadav to SE Marsh, 1 run, full, on off, pushed wide of mid-off. Morkel there gets a bad bounce, but does well to stop it

6.5

Agarkar to Katich, 1 run, slower ball, on a length, driven to sweeper-cover

6.6

Agarkar to SE Marsh, no run, short of a length, but slippery with the pace, and beats his attempt to crunch it wide of cover

Here's a surprise: Pietersen to bowl now. Perhaps it has something to do with the presence of two left-hand batsmen

7.1

Pietersen to Katich, no run, full, on pads, swept to short fine

7.2

Pietersen to Katich, FOUR, pulls the length back here, Katich doesn't have room, but he doesn't mind as he back-cuts this between point and short third man

7.3

Pietersen to Katich, 2 runs, fuller, chipped over cover

7.4

Pietersen to Katich, 1 run, angling in, nurdled into the on side

8.1

Agarkar to SE Marsh, no run, that's a shot of desperation. At 15 off 25, Marsh tries to slog-sweep Agarkar, and edges this to straightish extra cover

8.3

Agarkar to SE Marsh, FOUR, that will ease the pressure a little. Agarkar bowls a half-tracker, Marsh sits back, and pulls it over midwicket

8.4

Agarkar to SE Marsh, 1 run, runs this off the face of the bat, from in front of the stumps, gets a single

8.5

Agarkar to Katich, 1 leg bye, short, straight, Katich looks to work it away, but gets just the leg-bye off the hip

8.6

Agarkar to SE Marsh, no run, short of a length, on off, looks to punch it square, but is beaten by pace and extra bounce

End of over 9 (6 runs) Perth Scorchers 52/1 (RR: 5.77)

9.2

Pietersen to Katich, no run, full, into the pads, beats his drive

9.3

Pietersen to Katich, no run, KP thinks Ojha has dropped this. This one kicks off a shortish length, and might have taken the edge. Ojha can't hold on to it, though. On paper, one of the weak links in the DD team

Pietersen to Katich, 2 runs, misfield at point, and they come back for two

9.5

Pietersen to Katich, 1 run, driven to sweeper-cover

10.3

Yadav to SE Marsh, 1 wide, wide full toss. Very nearly a no-ball for height

12.4

Agarkar to Katich, 1 run, no room for Katich again. Pushed to point for one

12.5

Agarkar to SE Marsh, no run, short, outside off, but Marsh is beaten by the slower pace

12.6

Agarkar to SE Marsh, OUT, short again, but this is the skiddier delivery, and Marsh is clearly late into the pull. All he manages to do is find midwicket on the ring

SE Marsh c Sehwag b Agarkar 39 (48m 41b 6x4 0x6) SR: 95.12

14.1

Agarkar to Katich, OUT, Now Katich falls in the 30s after having gone at around a run a ball. This is going to hurt Scorchers. Agarkar is the man building the pressure and then reaping the rewards. Short of a length, no room, katich manages just a limp inside-out drive. Jayawardene at short cover dives to his right to take a low catch

SM Katich c Jayawardene b Agarkar 34 (47m 33b 2x4 1x6) SR: 103.03

Jonesy is another disappointed WA fan: "The Scorchers are, frankly, embarrassing themselves and WA cricket. The most frustrating thing is knowing what this talent is capable of and themnot doing it here. With Shaun out of touch, Mitch is the only really world class dominating batsman in their lineup, with obvious respect to a test great in Kat and the skipper they arent big hitters. Gibbs better not be playing in the BBL this summer, if he is then I can't support the men from the WACA."

"David Hussey? The list goes on" Matt adds to another WA policy failure

19.6

Yadav to North, 2 runs, Pietersen is on fire in the field. North finally manages a shot that looks like it might go for four, but KP ruins it. Lofted over the bowler's head, but KP from long-on dashes across to his right and puts the dive in to keep them down to two

2.50pm Daredevils have not only kept Scorchers down to 121, they have bowled their 20 overs in exactly 80 minutes. That's a special effort

So Scorchers end with nearly a run a ball, which is about right because most of their batsmen managed just that. S marsh and Katich added 73 in 66 balls, and then fell within eight balls of each other. After eating up so many deliveries, at least one of them needed to be there for the final kick. Scorchers were once again left needed something special from M Marsh, but that didn't arrive today. Now, to stay alive, they need to keep Jayawardene, Sehwag, Pietersen and Taylor down to a run a ball. We'll be back soon
