A tall offspinner capable of generating extra bounce, Akshay Wakhare had his breakthrough season in 2015-16, after having made his first-class debut in the 2006-07 season. Wakhare, who considers former India legspinner Narendra Hirwani as his mentor, played all of 37 domestic matches between 2006-07 and 2013-14.
Wakhare picked up his career-best match figures of 13 for 162 in the following season and stepped up further to become the lynchpin of the Vidarbha attack in the 2015-16 season, finishing with 49 wickets in the team's run to the Ranji quarter-final. Wakhare also did well in the Vijay Hazare Trophy that season, taking 10 wickets in seven matches at an average of 16.70 and an economy rate of 3.47. He was part of Mumbai Indians' squad in the 2015 IPL, but did not get a game. He was retained by the side ahead of the 2016 auction.
