Sam Conners, a willowy seamer capable of bowling long spells, claimed 50 Championship wickets in the summer of 2022 and was rewarded with a call-up to England Lions. As well as career-best first-class figures, Conners claimed a maiden List A five-for against Yorkshire in the Royal London Cup.

Conners took advantage of the absence of several senior players in Derbyshire's 2020 season to secure himself first-team opportunities in both four-day and T20 cricket. It was with the bat where he enjoyed his finest moment, making 5 not out in an 80-run stand with Leus du Plooy to set up a from-behind win at Trent Bridge. He started 2021 brightly, taking a five-for at Chester-le-Street in early season.
