Geoffrey Kirby joined the Surrey staff from Reading CC in 1947, making his first-class debut a year later. In such a strong set-up he was never able to secure a regular place, having to be content to be understudy to Arthur McIntyre, but he appeared six times in the second of their seven successive Championships in 1953. That was his last summer at The Oval, and in 1954 he played for Berkshire.
