Len Rowe was tried as an opening batsman by Oxford University at the start of the 1958 season but in ten innings he only reached double figures once, and that came when he was dropped to the middle order. He gained his place on the strength of having been on the books at Northamptonshire as a professional the previous summer, and after leaving university he played for Durham in the Minor Counties Championship. He was also a good rugby player, representing Oxford University and Northampton as a centre, but as with cricket, he failed to win a Blue.
