Playing Role

Bowler

Tall left-arm fast bowler Junaid Khan had a smooth action and the ability to shape the ball away from right-handers and swing it at pace, which made him one of Pakistan's most promising new-ball operators across formats in the first half of the 2010s.

Junaid hit a purple patch in his second year in international cricket, taking 20 wickets across ten ODIs against Australia, India and South Africa; his contributions were key to Pakistan winning the second of those series, in India. Though he didn't do much in the Champions Trophy of 2013, he was key the next time the tournament came around, when Pakistan won the title, in England.

His reputation in Test cricket was built early, on his stellar showing in the series win against Sri Lanka in the UAE in 2011 and the return series away the following year - he took 26 wickets in those six Tests at well under 25 runs apiece. In late 2013, he got stuck into Sri Lanka again in the UAE, taking 14 wickets in three Tests, followed by another nine in two matches when Pakistan went to Sri Lanka the next year. A full 50 of Junaid's 71 Test wickets came against Sri Lanka.

He was a regular in Pakistan's ODI side in his early years in international cricket but recurring fitness issues and competition for spots in the fast-bowling line-up meant he fell away after about 2015.

Away from the international stage, he carved out a steady career in T20 leagues, valued for his control in the powerplay and experience under pressure. He featured prominently in the PSL for Peshawar Zalmi and Multan Sultans, and took 26 wickets across his five seasons in the league.
