Rohan Mustafa had already become a keen student of the game when, at the age of 10, he moved with his family from Kohat in Pakistan to Sharjah. He soon enrolled in the Sharjah Cricket Academy and his cricket came along nicely, but when he was 15 tragedy struck when his father, who had been one of his cricketing mentors, passed away suddenly. Rohan stuck with the game, being picked for UAE Under-19 in 2007 and finding a way to keep playing despite his family's economic struggles.
An offspinning allrounder, he battled for a place in UAE's middle order and appeared to be settling into the team when he was faced with another hurdle: in September 2014, a Dubai court banned him from the country for one year for allegedly "absconding from duty". Rohan immediately returned to Pakistan, but a No Objection certificate from his former employers and the efforts of national coach Aaqib Javed helped him appeal and overturn the court order. He returned to UAE and was named in their squad for the 2015 World Cup.
