A top-order batter who can also keep wicket, Anamul first made headlines when, shortly before his 20th birthday, he took Bangladesh to one of their biggest ODI wins, scoring his maiden hundred in only his second international, against West Indies in Khulna in 2012.

That he was a precocious talent was also evidenced by his first-class debut at age 15 and his appointment as Bangladesh's captain for the 2012 Under-19 World Cup, where he was the side's highest run-getter.

But that talent did not always come to the fore at the senior level. While he was among Bangladesh's leading scorers in the 2014 T20 World Cup and Asia Cup, Anamul often had trouble converting his starts as well as in rotating the strike, and found himself out of all three formats in 2015.

He made a brief and unmemorable ODI comeback in 2018, but had a more convincing return across formats four years later on the back of strong domestic performances, although his international career continued to remain start-stop, relying more on selection upheavals and injuries to other batters than his own scores. He played all three matches of Bangladesh's 2-1 ODI series win over India in December 2022, but managed an underwhelming 14 as his top score.

Anamul was recalled to Bangladesh's Test squad in 2025 - after a gap of three years - after they lost a home Test to Zimbabwe, but made two ducks in two Tests in Sri Lanka.

His nickname Bijoy, meaning "victory" in Bangla, is said to have been given by a school teacher who saw that Anamul's birthday fell on December 16, celebrated as Victory Day in the country.
