Profile

A middle-order batsman, Basil Crews played 16 first-class matches for five different sides in a career which spanned 13 seasons. In 1948-49 he scored 104 for South African Universities against MCC, but after a couple more indifferent seasons he disappeared from the first-class scene. He reappeared for Border in 1956-57, making a career-best 110 in his third comeback match, but he failed to make his mark after that. An accountant by profession, he spent time in Rhodesia and Europe which did not help his cricket career. The cricket pavilion at Rondebosch school is named after Crews, who was a generous benefactor to the establishment.
