Denys Hobson was a legspinner who was generally regarded as the best spin bowler in the country during South Africa's era of isolation. So highly was he regarded that he was signed by Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket in 1977 but he never took to the field as he had never played for South Africa, a qualification necessary in order to bypass political issues. His finest hour came in 1977-78 when he used a gale at Newlands to take 9 for 64 against Eastern Province.
