Sam Hain

Sam Hain was widely seen as Warwickshire's next big batting thing when in 2014 he became the youngest man to score a first-class hundred and double-hundred for them. He finished the season on top of the run-makers' table for the county, a feat he repeated the following year.

Born in Hong Kong to British parents, Hain was mostly brought up in Australia and fast-tracked into their Under-19 side as a 16-year-old. On an exchange scheme in Edinburgh, he was spotted by former Warwickshire captain Michael Powell, who asked him to go to trials for Warwickshire, where former England allrounder Rikki Clarke rated Hain's batting in the nets as the best he had ever seen.

Hain qualified for England at the end of 2016 and became a regular feature in Lions squads from 2018 onwards. He struggled for runs in the County Championship from 2016, but after returning to form in 2019 he enjoyed a stellar 2022, in which his 1137 runs at 63.16 were instrumental in keeping the club in the top flight

Hain's 50-over form has been remarkable, marked by regular low-risk runs and the ability to rotate the strike against spin impressively in the middle overs, and his average - in the high 50s - has consistently been the best by an England player in List A history. In T20 cricket, he has been a mainstay of the Birmingham Bears side, but in an era of rich options for the national white-ball team, his England call-up has proven elusive.
