With a name like W Rhodes, it was no surprise that many Yorkshire cricket supporters with a working knowledge of the great Wilfred a century or so earlier were for yearning for Will Rhodes to demand his own chapter in the county's history. Sadly, Will Rhodes did not bowl slow left-arm and just as sadly for those supporters his career moved on from Yorkshire as he began to build a reputation as a productive and disciplined opening batsman and useful change bowler at Warwickshire.

Rhodes, a seam-bowling allrounder, signed junior professional terms at Headingley at the end of 2013. He made a surprise debut in May 2014 against Glamorgan at Colwyn Bay at the start of the YB 40 competition, but quickly began to show why Paul Farbrace, then Yorkshire's Second XI coach, described him as "an outstanding all-rounder" and "a very talented cricketer". He also played for England U-19s against Pakistan and made a hundred.

He progressed in 2015. He made his first-class debut in the champion county fixture against the MCC in Abu Dhabi, taking three cheap wickets and scoring 61 from the middle order. He was handed the opener's berth for the start of the Championship season in place of England-bound Adam Lyth. Also a regular in one-day and Twenty20 cricket, he showed promise with bat and ball.

Yorkshire decided, though, that his advancement would be quickened elsewhere and he spent time on loan at Essex, under the tutelage of two fellow Yorkshiremen - Chris Silverwood and Anthony McGrath - in 2016 and then decided, midway through the 2017 season, that his future would be better served elsewhere.

On the recommendation of former Yorkshire coach, Jason Gillespie, an admirer of his talents and the person who had encouraged him to open the batting, he signed a two-year deal with Warwickshire ahead of the 2018 season. He delivered the goods immediately, striking four Championship hundreds (the first of his career coming as he successfully marshalled a run chase against Northants at Edgbaston) and was appointed club captain at the end of 2019, replacing Jeetan Patel.
