Nathan Sowter

Nathan Sowter feared his professional career was over when he sat in the changing rooms at Billericay CC in late 2022, having played his final game for Middlesex's 2nd XI and without a county contract for the following summer. Instead, he thrived at Durham in the T20 Blast and became the unsung hero of Oval Invincibles' three successive Hundred titles, named player of the match in the final in the third.

Born in New South Wales, Sowter speaks with an Australian twang and represented the state at age-group level before moving to the UK, playing as a local through his English passport. He was handed a chance at Middlesex after a couple of successful seasons for Normandy CC, near Guildford, and took two for two from four balls on T20 debut at Lord's. He became a rare consistent performer in an underperforming white-ball side thanks to his fast, flat legbreaks and googlies, and had sporadic opportunities in four-day cricket, too.

But Middlesex decided there was no room on their staff for a specialist T20 spinner and released him at the end of 2022, prompting his move to Durham after a successful loan spell earlier that season. He helped them to the Blast quarter-finals in 2024 and 2025, but it was in the Hundred that he really thrived. Retained throughout the competition's first five seasons by Tom Moody's Invincibles, Sowter played as one of two wristspinners - alongside either Rashid Khan or Adam Zampa - and happily held his own. His crowning moment came in the 2025 final, when he dismissed Joe Root, Tom Banton and Rehan Ahmed in the space of six balls.

His performances earned him deals in the CPL and the ILT20, though an England call-up eluded him.
