India and Pakistan Under-19s tie thrilling final

Pakistan Under-19s 282 for 9 (Aslam 134, Kalaria 5-37) tied with India Under-19s 282 for 8 (Chand 121, Aparajith 90, Nawaz 3-45)
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

For the second time in two matches, there was very little separating India and Pakistan's Under-19 teams, as they tied the final of the Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur in dramatic fashion. Pakistan opener Sami Aslam scored his second hundred of the series to carry his team to 282, before India captain Unmukt Chand did the same for his side. But both centuries went in vain, with neither team claiming the trophy.

Pakistan did well to achieve the tie. India were in relative control in the chase, needing 37 in the final six overs, with seven wickets in hand and Chand batting on 101. Left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz then produced two effective overs, claiming two wickets and conceding just five, to bring Pakistan back into the game. Chand was still around though and almost carried his bat, but his dismissal off the fourth ball of the final over - caught on the cover boundary off seamer Ehsan Adil - left India needing five off two deliveries. No. 8 Rush Kalaria pierced the off side for four, to bring the scores level. The final delivery, though, he could only chip gently to mid-off. Dot ball. Shared title.

Like in their one-run defeat to Pakistan in the group match, India chose to field. And once again, Pakistan's innings was built around Aslam. India managed to keep the scoring in check early in the innings, but a 100-run stand at over a run a ball between Umar Waheed and Sami Aslam for the third wicket put Pakistan on course for a sizeable total.

Pakistan had launched the final assault, scoring 49 from overs 41 to 45, when Kalaria removed Saad Ali and Aslam off consecutive balls. He took three more wickets, and Pakistan managed only 30 for 5 in the final five.

India's reply revolved around a 175-run stand for the second wicket between Chand and B Aparajith. Aparajith fell 10 short of a hundred, Nawaz's first victim of the game. Apart from these two, none of the other India batsmen managed to go past 23, as the lower-middle order let the game slip from their grasp.

Aslam's century came after scores 82 not out, 121, 47 and 77, and he, expectedly, won the Player of the Series and best batsman awards. Sri Lanka offspinner Tharindu Kaushal, who picked up 12 wickets in four games, was named the best bowler of the tournament.

Amazing finish, don't know how India vs Pakistan always produces great finishes. Positive things from both the camps. U.Chand is a guy who I have heard a lot about as he hails from Delhi. He's surely following the footsteps of V.Kohli who was on the same lines as him 3-4 yrs back and look at that guy now. U.Chand has done well for Delhi, also signed by Delhi Daredevils[Hasn't got much chances as of now though]. This Asia Cup just shows his talent. The U-19 WC will be a huge tournament for him though. Needless to say, both teams are favourites for that WC too.

@nampally - same thoughts as you Chand, Aparajith, Zol should now be given a go at India A and then later senior team. Along with Pujara - we have four possible players for the senior role. We have the makings of a good openner in Chand.

But still, they got age on their side and can certainly improve.. BCCI should let them to participate in the County or other nation domestic competitions..

@ Nampally. just wait. we have u19 world cup in august this year. Let the boys concentrate on forthcoming world cup. i say again india need to look for consistent opener along with chand. india also need to hv 6th bowler, who can bowl sm overs in between. if we see in all matches india felt need of another bowler. we cant expect all the 5 bowlers perform consistently in every match. Always 1 bowler has failed.if we hv to win world cup, we need to concentrate on these aspects.

  • POSTED BY cricket4every on | July 2, 2012, 3:14 GMT

@Desihangama. i think chand did a right thing by refusing 2nd run on 3rd ball. bcoz he was set batsman nd kalaria was new to crease. he had to lead from the front. other wise same situation wd hv arisen as it was in last match against pak, where zol did mistake. i hope u remember. u may b right, but i hv my opinions.

  • POSTED BY on | July 2, 2012, 1:59 GMT

to be fair i think pak shud have been given trophy because they played the better tournament being undefeated. and can imagine sami aslam in 3 years opening batting for pak

  • POSTED BY Nampally on | July 2, 2012, 0:34 GMT

At least 3 of the players from India U-19 should be given chances to play for India A tour of NZ. U.Chand,Aparajith & Zol all batted with authority in the Asia cup Tourney & Sandeep Sharma bowled well. If India is in search of talent, here is the golden opportunity to groom them young. We see write ups by Aakash Chopra laments about lack of good indian openers. U.Chand showed he is a great opener & hungry for runs. He scored a century in the semifinal & Final besides in the preliminary rounds. Zol & Aparajith have also scored heavily. Aparajith is also a useful off spinner. Some of the players in the India A were also talented youngsters in U-19 team such as C.Pujara - still waiting for a regular test place. If these guys are not groomed at the right time we cannot develop them into Dravids, Gavaskars & Tendulkars. BCCI, Please consider these youngsters right now as potential future stars!. Give them a break right now.

Had Chand not refused the 2nd run of 3rd delivery of final over, India would have won. Well played Pakistan to make it a tie.

i think kalaria should be the man of the match, but no one give attention on bowler,s performance. well done kalaria, he first restrict the pak to go beyond 300 and at last if chand take double on kalaria,s hit result might be diffrent
