2.3 to Sangakkara, Gone first ball! another fuller length delivery outside the off stump, slight moment but hard to say which way. A perfect delivery first up and even Sangakkara could not resist having a poke at it and this time the edge went straight to the keeper. Anderson on a hat-trick here and Strauss' ploy of taking early wickets seems to be working just fine 11/2

61.5 to HAPW Jayawardene, 81.2 mph, that has swung back in a mile, and Anderson has got the lbw appeal in his favour, Sri Lanka go for the review, they have to, this is the last batting pair, he pushed forward in defence, but ended up pushing about a foot outside the eventual line of the ball as it swerved back in too much from a good length, hit him above the knee roll, replays show that was hitting top of middle and leg, on-field umpire's decision was out, and so it remains 170/6

92.6 to Welegedara, 71.4 mph, lovely bowling. Anderson has done it by himself. Welegedara must have been expecting a bouncer, as he is stuck on the back foot. Anderson slips in the slower offcutter, Welegedara's foot is nowhere near it, and it breaks through the gap between bat and pad, hitting the top of leg. That's a clever dismissal 307/9

96.3 to DPMD Jayawardene, Oh well done Anderson. Just when I was about to say this is looking like a middle-wicket net session. Anderson gets his fifth. Just short of a length, just outside off, Jayawardene comes forward to defend. The ball just holds its line, the edge is taken, and finally Anderson has produced the breakthrough 318/10

3.5 to Dilshan, 85.2 mph, Broad too joins the party! good length delivery outside the off stump, nothing great there but Dilshan makes it look good by pushing at it with zero feet movement. Sweet sound of leather on edge and the ball goes straight to Strauss at first slip 15/3

49.6 to Chandimal, 52.8 mph, now gone! Awful stroke, a swish across the line and produces a big top edge that falls comfortably to Bell at cover. A first Test wicket for Samit Patel, it was a ordinary delivery on a length on off stump but the horrendous heave brought a wild edge in the air and it was pouched easily 128/5

80.2 to Herath, and there's the breakthrough! A paddle sweep misses, Herath is hit on the full in front of off stump...the review actually has it as umpire's call so closer than first inspection but out nevertheless and Herath's vigil comes to an end. But he did hold an end up well enough 253/8

17.1 to Pietersen, Bowled'im. This is not left-arm spin, but Welegedara is a left-arm bowler all right. A dismissal difficult to explain why. A length ball from round the stumps, outside off, Pietersen stretches forward, goes for the drive, doesn't cover the angle of the ball, gets an inside edge, and the off stump is knocked back. England continue to find ways of getting out. And Jayawardene continues to have the right bowler on at the right time 65/4

1.5 to Cook, 83.6 mph, big lbw appeal, and he is given. Cook is not going to review it. The first ball to swing this over. This is a length ball, on off, Cook's front foot moves a touch too far across. The ball swings back in, the bat way outside the line of the ball, and he is hit in front of off. Cook has a word with Strauss, but Strauss lets him know he would only be wasting the review here 0/1

10.3 to Trott, What a mess Trott has made of this one. He is not only out, he is down too. This one looks like a full toss as Trott gives him the charge. It seems it is fuller than he has expected, and looks to play this across the line, and misses it by a mile. P Jayawardene makes a difficult collection, as this is pitched on the crease, and he must have been blinded by Trott too. And then he stumps him. That's not all Trott's misery, though. As he desperately looks to make it back, he runs into the gloves of the celebrating Prasanna. That's a knockout blow if the stumping wasn't one, and Trott is left flat on his back. Superb stumping, all said and done. This is a half-volley that has turned away, and he has made the collection 40/2

12.4 to Strauss, Sri Lanka are reviewing this. This is very close. Strauss is sweeping this really full delivery, and misses it. This has hit him on the half-volley, so no scope for much turn. It all depends on where the ball has hit him with respect to the line of off stump. Strauss has moved well across here, but Asad Rauf has given this not out. After a discussion, Jayawardene makes the T sign. And rightly so. This is full, pitched around off, turning in towards middle, Strauss is beaten on the sweep, and off he goes. Strauss doesn't seem happy. One of the reasons could be the time taken by Jayawardene before reviewing this. It did seem longish, but it is the umpire's discretion to allow or disallow a review 43/3

18.6 to Prior, 49.2 mph, Given out lbw. Prior wondering if he should review this, but it seems the Strauss tendency of staying back has done him in too. Prior has reviewed this, though. Now a recap of what happened. It was a length ball, pitched on middle and leg, Prior stayed back, giving it time to turn. And turn it did, squaring Prior up, beating the outside edge, hitting him in front of leg stump. It was dead plumb, and Prior - being one of the last recognised batsmen - was just taking a chance with that review 72/5

26.1 to Patel, 52.3 mph, Oh the cement feet stuck close to the stumps. I can't figure, for the life of me, why they are all playing back to length balls. This one is the slider, to Herath's credit, but it is also a length ball, and he should have been forward, defending it back to Herath. Instead, he is deep inside the crease, and the ball slides in with the arm, and catches him dead plumb in front of middle 92/6

32.1 to Broad, 56.4 mph, full, swept and missed given out! and Broad goes straight for the referral. It doesn't look as if he's hit this...no hotspot in this series remember so there's no conclusive proof and Broad will have to go because hawk-eye has it hitting in line and going on to hit the stumps. 40.5 to Bell, 49.2 mph, got him with a beauty a left-armer's dream, spins past the outside edge and removes the off bail. Grip and turn past Bell's forward defence, so reminiscent of those dismissals in the UAE, a perfect delivery by Herath who now has six-for 157/9

39.4 to Swann, but gone now as Swann finds Dilshan at short midwicket, he was trying to use his feet and go over the top again but didn't get to the pitch and chipped up a simple chance to the fielder's left, comfortably taken with both hands 157/8

46.4 to Panesar, 51.2 mph, given out now with Panesar caught on the front pad and the finger goes up pretty quickly for lbw, might have slid on with the arm, beating the inside edge 193/10

Full and straight, pitches middle and off, swings back in, Dilshan has missed the line, falls over when driving, and the ball hits the pad in front of leg before ricocheting onto the stumps. And Broad takes us to the West with his slinging-guns celebration. Too bad they don't wear cowboy hats to the cricket 4/1

6.2 to Thirimanne, Oh we have been expecting you, Mr Swann. Once again he strikes in the first over of a new spell. And a classical dismissal too. Tossed up generously, pitches middle and leg, Thirimanne is looking leg side, closing the face, but the ball dips, and then turns away to beat the bat and take the off stump 8/2

8.1 to DPMD Jayawardene, 53.8 mph, Swann strikes again. And it's the big man MJ. Excellent bowling. Goes straght on after pitching on a length outside off. Jayawardene is expecting an offbreak that he can defend towards the vacant silly point region. This one doesn't turn, though, and takes the edge to first slip. England are right back into this one. 18.6 to Sangakkara, 54.8 mph, got him! Swann strikes again and removes another left-hander. And it's an absolute beauty, producing an edge to gully. Classic off break bowling, drift in, forcing Sangakkara forward but he wasn't completely to the pitch, played a not great prod and edged to Bell who bagged a sharp chance to put England right back in the match 41/4

30.1 to Samaraweera, stumped! And England do strike before the close, as Samaraweera walks past one outside off stump and falls just before the close. It was a slider from Swann past the outside edge, Samaraweera was in a dreadful position, was done on the outside edge and stumped by a distance by a gleeful Matt Prior 72/5

50.5 to Randiv, 52.9 mph, Swann picks a five-for! Turns in from a good length outside off, and strikes him on the pads as he tries to defend with bat close to pad, was there at involved? Asad Rauf raises his finger but the batsman has called for a review. Struck him in line, it struck pad first and then the bat, would have gone on to clip the bails. It's the umpire's call and the original decision is upheld. 115/7

54.1 to Herath, Herath swings and misses! That was his only approach, Swann came round the wicket and Herath looked to slog it over midwicket, missed as it turned away a hint and crashed into the stumps 127/8

47.2 to Chandimal, 55.1 mph, Panesar strikes! A big wicket, that, Chandimal's aggressive instinct took over, he came down the track to that flattish delivery and tried to loft him inside out over extra cover, didn't time that at all, gifted an easy catch to mid-off 114/6

70.5 to Welegedara, Gone, good catch by Strauss diving to his right, around a good length and it turned away, stabbed at that one, reaching forward, gets an outside edge and Strauss clasps it with both hands 167/9

8.5 to Cook, Appeal for a catch, Jayawardene has called for a review, no Hot Spot, the umpire turned the appeal down, slid it on a good length outside off, turned the face on that one after getting across, it held its line and upon closer look, it seemed there was a deviation off the bat. Prasanna took a sharp catch behind the stumps. The Sri Lankans were completely convinced, Jayawardene immediately went for the review. 31/1

18.3 to Strauss, 49.0 mph, Herath strikes, England under more pressure now, the openers are gone. Tossed up and he accepted the invite, danced down the track to smack that over mid-on, ended up being a thick inside edge and Dilshan dived to his right at midwicket to complete a sharp catch 48/2

58.1 to Bell, 48.3 mph, a huge appeal for lbw and umpire Tucker raises the finger, but Bell reviews it immediately. He moved forward to sweep but he was far too early on the shot, Bell had to wait ages and when the ball finally reached him it dipped under his bat and hit low on the pad. He was miles outside his crease. He got a long stride forward and his back foot was outside the crease as well. I can't see evidence of a bottom edge, but even if he hit it, I think the ball was caught be someone. Replays indicate the ball hit the pad just in line of off stump and would have gone on to just clip the outside of off stump. So the umpire's decision is upheld. Bell has to go. But he was a long, long way forward. I was mistaken, no one caught the ball off the pad. 152/4

85.6 to Prior, 49.3 mph, sweep and he's caught at short leg! Drama as it goes straight to the man under the lid, it gets stuck in his midriff and Thirimanne managed to fumble around and cling on. So unlucky for Prior but is that the slice of luck that Sri Lanka need 233/5

93.5 to Patel, 48.7 mph, caught at cover! There was a fumble from Dilshan but a brilliant take on the second grab. Patel tried to step away a touch to drive and did so in the air straight to Dilshan who initially dropped the chance but held on with one hand with a great reaction 252/6
