John Wheatley, of Waimate, South Canterbury, New Zealand, died on April 20, aged 102. Born on January 8, 1860, he is thought to have been the only first-class cricketer so far to have reached the age of 100. He played for Canterbury fourteen times between 1882-83 and 1903-04, later becoming a Canterbury selector. His best score was 53 against the Queensland touring side of 1896-97, while in his last game for Canterbury, being manager of the team, he filled a vacancy and made 45 against Hawke's Bay.
