A top-order left-hand batsman, Murray Vernon played for Western Australia between 1955-56 and 1967-68. His best summer came in 1960-61 when he scored 696 runs at 43.50 but he missed all the next season and when he returned his worst year followed. He finished strongly with five of his eight hundreds coming in his final three years, including his career-best 173 against New South Wales in 1965-66, and he bowed out the year Western Australia won their first Sheffield Shield. He skippered Melville in grade cricket and played two seasons as a professional for Rishton in the Lancashire Leagues.
