Tom Maynard was one of the most promising young players on the county circuit when he was tragically killed after an incident on the London Underground in June 2012. Aged just 23, he had played for Surrey in a Twenty20 game against Kent less than 24 hours earlier.

Maynard, whose family name is steeped in Welsh cricket history, had been tipped to represent England after flourishing at Surrey. He toured with England Lions over the winter of 2011-12 and began the following season in fine form, making his highest first-class score of 143 against Worcestershire. His maiden first-class hundred had come a year earlier against Glamorgan, his former county, as he began to marry production with an attractive style in London.

Maynard did not have an easy start to his professional career for reasons both on and off the field. When he began at Glamorgan there was the pressure of carrying his father Matthew's name and runs were hard to come by. Then things got ugly. Matthew Maynard left Glamorgan in bitter circumstances during the 2010 off season and Tom felt he could no longer remain at a club that treated his dad in such a manner. He made a move to Surrey, gambling on a new start as the county rebuilt under the captaincy of his former Millfield schoolmate Rory Hamilton-Brown.
