Surrey dropped their England wicketkeeper Steven Davies from the line-up for their current match against Nottinghamshire because of a "lack of form", according to the club. His troubles are in no small part due to the passing of his friend and Surrey team-mate Tom Maynard, who died in an accident on the London underground in June.

Davies was part of England's squad in the UAE at the start of the year, as Matt Prior's back-up for the series against Pakistan. Having played in eight ODIs and five T20Is for England, coming into this season he could have been seen as Craig Kieswetter's limited-overs back-up, as well the Test reserve.

Davies was called up as cover when Prior suffered an eye infection ahead of the third Test against West Indies but since then Jonny Bairstow has solidified his Test place and the Yorkshire wicketkeeper could fulfill the role of Prior's deputy on the forthcoming tour of India.

The fallout from Maynard's death has affected Surrey in many ways. Rory Hamilton-Brown originally took compassionate leave, before briefly coming back; he then relinquished the captaincy and has been dropped for poor form. It now seems like Davies is the latest victim.

For last week's match at Taunton, Surrey said that Davies was missing because of a stomach complaint. It was that injury that was seen as the original reason for him missing this match as well.

Davies started the season well, hitting 62 at the top of the order in his opening Championship innings, and he followed that up with a blistering hundred against Somerset in his fourth match. They are his only two scores above 50 this year. Since Maynard's death, Davies has averaged 15 with a top score of 35 in the Championship.

With Davies' mindset and form a problem, Surrey may have to use Rory Burns to keep in their last match of the season against Lancashire at Liverpool. Gary Wilson, Surrey's back-up keeper, is not available for selection for the last game as he will be travelling to Sri Lanka for the World Twenty20 to represent Ireland.

Davies, 26, who joined from Worcestershire in 2009 as one of the most promising young players on the county circuit, signed a new three-year deal with Surrey last month, having accepted a cut in his salary.

Big G4yer... gotta be made of stronger stuff! Don't waste your talent Steve and pray you'll be back in the groove soon

It would be terrible if Davies' England career was to suffer because of this. I still think he is the best person to cover for Prior, with Bairstow going as a pure batsman.

Hope he has a good winter anyway whatever he does and hopefully the old Davies will be back next season.

Shame to hear that. Davies is a quality opener and keeper for Surrey and in my opinion very unlucky not to be England's! He could do a much better job than Kieswetter, and actually open the batting. Hope for Surrey's case, he comes back with a bang next year!

He will be back next season, too good of a player not too. Rory Burns is looking a fine player with the bat so will be interesting to see how he does having to open and take the gloves.
