Chris Payne was a free-scoring middle-order batsman whose five first-class matches for Middlesex were entirely - and surprisingly -unsuccessful. He made a pair on his debut against Yorkshire in 1968 and finished with 0 against Essex. His only two double-figure scores came against Derbyshire where he made 32 of his 40 career runs. At club level, however, he was a colossus. Playing for Southgate, he averaged 117 in the league in 1976 and made 104 not out in the 1977 National Club final at Edgbaston. He also played for Minor Counties in the Benson & Hedges Cup.
