The offspinner John Savage played the majority of his first-class career at Leicestershire (1953-1966), before coming to Lancashire in 1967. With the emergence of Jack Simmons, opportunities in Lancashire's first team were limited, but Lancashire saw in Savage strong leadership qualities and asked him to take on the role of Player Coach for the club's up and coming talent. So in 1969, and until the end of his playing career in 1978, Savage remained in this role and nurtured the future stars of Lancashire with great success. In 2001, he was elected a Vice-President of Lancashire County Cricket Club. He died in 2008 after a short illness.
