India tour of England, Only T20I: England v India at Manchester, Aug 31, 2011
England won by 6 wickets (with 3 balls remaining)
31 August 2011 - night match (20-over match)

Hello, Sahil here. Thanks Nitin, rumours have it your were loving some of that. From what I saw that Raina fellow looks like he can hit a long ball, great on the baseball hook shot too. Rahane was mighty exciting, especially when you look at his first-class record. Jade Dernbach was excellent, dragged England back into the game with a mix of very sharp and very slow balls. I imagine Flower wrote :) in his notes about Dernbach. The thought of Flower writing a smiley thingy really amuses me. Anyway. 166 is a lot to chase, be good to see Alex Hales up top though. Freddie is on Sky, with his kid on his knee. Which is lovely. Sounds perhaps a bit tipsy. Fred that is, not his kid. Either way can't imagine Flower putting too many smilies on his Flintoff notes. Meanwhile, Dhoni is leading what looks like a very serious huddle. There was me thinking a one-off T20 match would be all jokey. Praveen will open up to Hales...

Kumar to Hales, no run, confident start for Hales. Eases into a sweetly-timed drive to mid-off

Kumar to Hales, OUT, no debut dream for Hales then! Out for a duck second ball! This looked dead straight away and the umpire's finger was up in a no time. Wicket-to-wicket line and Hales played outside of it. Thudded into the pad and it's all over

AD Hales lbw b Kumar 0 (1m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Here's KP. So PK to KP, for all of you who like that sort of thing. And judging by the feedback there are many.

Kumar to Pietersen, no run, Pietersen starts by waltzing across his stumps to try and whip to leg. Misses the ball though

Kumar to Pietersen, no run, Pietersen shuffled down and outside off to work to leg again. Flicked the pad and went to slip where Dravid flung back a throw

Kumar to Pietersen, 2 leg byes, the familiar sight of Dhoni stuffing up a take. Clipped the pad and ran away

Good from Dhoni, up to the stumps.

Kumar to Pietersen, 1 run, Pietersen has to stay put and Praveen's lines are good again. Worked to the on side

End of over 1 (3 runs) England 3/1 (163 runs required from 19 overs, RR: 3.00, RRR: 8.57)

    • KP Pietersen 1 (4b)
    • C Kieswetter 0 (0b)
    • P Kumar 1-0-1-1

Vinay Kumar shares the new white ball.

Vinay Kumar to Pietersen, 2 runs, starts well outside off and Pietersen runs across his stumps to flip to leg

Vinay Kumar to Pietersen, 2 runs, no midwicket in place so Pietersen works a straightish ball away for a couple

Vinay Kumar to Pietersen, 1 run, bowler misfields to allow Pietersen a single for his punch-drive. All of which means Kieswetter finally gets to face a ball

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, no run, very solid defence of his off stump. Good line from Vinay, though

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, 1 run, Kieswetter is away by chopping down to third man

Vinay Kumar to Pietersen, 1 leg bye, big appeal as Pietersen is struck in front of the stumps on the pads. But he'd charged half-way down. And outside the line, to be fair. Still, Pietersen hasn't really got going yet

End of over 2 (7 runs) England 10/1 (156 runs required from 18 overs, RR: 5.00, RRR: 8.66)

    • KP Pietersen 6 (8b)
    • C Kieswetter 1 (2b)
    • R Vinay Kumar 1-0-6-0

Kumar to Pietersen, FOUR, oh dear. Inside edge gets Pietersen four but he knew nothing about it. The batsman shuffled outside leg, got back in line, swung wildly and it sped away. Praveen's line didn't vary. Have to love him

Kumar to Pietersen, 1 leg bye, inside edge again, it bobbles away this time. Meanwhile, there is a pinkish sunset that makes Manchester look like Jaipur. Absurdly

Kumar to Kieswetter, 1 run, Kieswetter nudges into space

Kumar to Pietersen, no run, Pietersen pushes to cover after running around the crease. Odd, he looks frenetic, which is needless for one who hits so cleanly

Kumar to Pietersen, 1 run, quietly pushed to mid-off for a single. This is Pietersen's last England innings in a long time remember, he's been 'rested' from the ODIs

Kumar to Kieswetter, no run, good start from India. Kumar has been excellent

End of over 3 (7 runs) England 17/1 (149 runs required from 17 overs, RR: 5.66, RRR: 8.76)

    • C Kieswetter 2 (4b)
    • KP Pietersen 11 (12b 1x4)
    • P Kumar 2-0-7-1

MM Patel to Pietersen, FOUR, dropped! Good effort by Parthiv in the outfield I suppose. Pietersen flayed wildly and it looped out towards Parhiv. He hared in, well, he tried to, managed to get his hands under it but spilled it diving forward. Worse still it bobbled away for four

MM Patel to Pietersen, 1 run, again Pietersen looks uncomfortable but works a single

MM Patel to Kieswetter, SIX, wild swish off a medium pacer but still it goes off the edge miles back into the stands for six. Big bats these days

MM Patel to Kieswetter, 1 run, pushed away for a single

MM Patel to Pietersen, FOUR, not a good ball here. Shortish and Pietersen stands still this time and whacks a four to deep square

MM Patel to Pietersen, 1 run, Pietersen aims a drive, mistimes it and gets a single

Four overs gone, at this stage India were also on 34.

End of over 4 (17 runs) England 34/1 (132 runs required from 16 overs, RR: 8.50, RRR: 8.25)

    • P Kumar 2-0-7-1

Vinay Kumar to Pietersen, 1 run, pushed to the off side for a quick single

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, no run, Kieswetter aims big and gets little. Nothing in fact. Walked outside leg to try and launch over cover but ended up with nothing but inside edge

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, FOUR, ah much better from Kieswetter. Calmer. Gave himself just a little bit of room and punched a drive through the off-side ring

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, no run, play and a miss as Kieswetter flays at fresh air

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, FOUR, Kieswetter ran very far outside leg stump and ended up having to really reach for this outside off. Still he timed it very firmly through the off side and Rohit dives over the ball on the boundary. Not the best piece of fielding

Vinay Kumar to Kieswetter, no run, after boundaries from (semi) controlled shots, Kieswetter reverts to hacking and mistimes it

End of over 5 (9 runs) England 43/1 (123 runs required from 15 overs, RR: 8.60, RRR: 8.20)

    • C Kieswetter 17 (11b 2x4 1x6)

Here's R Ashwin. Spin or bust by the looks of things for India.

Ashwin to Pietersen, FOUR, starts a touch leg side and Pietersen sweeps hard over to the fine leg boundary

Ashwin to Pietersen, no run, good bowling, saw Pietersen edging down and fired it in quick

Ashwin to Pietersen, 1 wide, cat and mouse as Ashwin pre-empts a Pietersen charge by shoving down the leg side. Trouble is Pietersen stood still so it was a wide

Ashwin to Pietersen, 1 run, Pietersen shuffles down leg and back into line before sweeping a single

Ashwin to Kieswetter, 1 wide, fired well down the leg side

Ashwin to Kieswetter, 1 run, Kieswetter hops down and flicks to deep midwicket

Ashwin to Pietersen, 1 run, Pietersen dabs a very Dravid-like single with an open face down

Ashwin to Kieswetter, 2 wides, slipped down leg again. Eep

Ashwin to Pietersen, FOUR, oh dear, that ends an expensive over. Again a touch leg side and Pietersen nailed his sweep shot away for four

End of over 6 (15 runs) England 58/1 (108 runs required from 14 overs, RR: 9.66, RRR: 7.71)

    • KP Pietersen 32 (22b 5x4)

    • R Ashwin 1-0-15-0

MM Patel to Kieswetter, OUT, gone now! India break the spell of runs. Slightly slower ball duped Kieswetter who punched his drive straight to cover

C Kieswetter c Raina b MM Patel 18 (30m 13b 2x4 1x6) SR: 138.46

Eoin Morgan to the crease now. This is England's key partnership.

MM Patel to Morgan, no run, Morgan starts by skipping down the wicket and blocking firmly back to the bowler

MM Patel to Morgan, 1 run, Morgan was done there! Slower ball and Morgan was through the shot a touch early ended up guiding it in the air, one-bounce to deep cover

MM Patel to Pietersen, 1 run, not sure Pietersen knew much of this. Aimed a sweep but top-edged it into his face. Lucky he had a visor, really

MM Patel to Morgan, no run, beaten! Top delivery. Pitches a zips away past the outside edge

MM Patel to Morgan, no run, blocked back to the bowler who picks up, casually throws to a fielder and collects his cap. Good work from Munaf, must be thrilled to get off the bench

End of over 7 (2 runs) England 60/2 (106 runs required from 13 overs, RR: 8.57, RRR: 8.15)

    • EJG Morgan 1 (4b)
    • KP Pietersen 33 (23b 5x4)
    • MM Patel 2-0-19-1
    • R Ashwin 1-0-15-0

Virat gets a go. Medium pace. His first bowl in T20I

Kohli to Pietersen, 1 wide, OUT, how about that for a start! Dhoni, for the first time all summer, is excellent behind the stumps! Shoved down the leg side, Pietersen came too far out his ground and Dhoni had the bails off in a flash

KP Pietersen st †Dhoni b Kohli 33 (31m 23b 5x4 0x6) SR: 143.47

Bopara is the new man, never the quickest starter.

Kohli to Bopara, 1 run, in-drift finds an inside edge that runs to fine leg to get Bopara away

Kohli to Morgan, no run, beats Morgan this time. Outside off stump with his medium-pace wobble

Kohli to Morgan, 1 leg bye, worked off pad towards midwicket

Kohli to Bopara, no run, touch of nibble away from the bat. Bopara defends nervously

Kohli to Bopara, no run, beaten! Once again Bopara looks like he's tetchy. Full outside off and he plays over it

Kohli to Bopara, 1 run, worked carefully into the leg side

End of over 8 (4 runs) England 64/3 (102 runs required from 12 overs, RR: 8.00, RRR: 8.50)

    • RS Bopara 2 (4b)
    • EJG Morgan 1 (6b)
    • V Kohli 1-0-3-1

Excellent Tweet from Sampson Collins of Two Chucks. "Is Kohli Chris Harris in disguise?!!"

Sharma to Bopara, 1 leg bye, Bopara skips down without quite reaching the ball, ends up working it off a pad away to fine leg

Sharma to Morgan, FOUR, that eases the pressure slightly. Morgan with that extra-cover drive of his drills this through a fine gap, hard enough to beat the outfielder

Sharma to Morgan, FOUR, short ball punished! Hops back and thrashes it in front of the deep point

Sharma to Morgan, SIX, Morgan gets enough of this. Shoves his foot down and and flays through the line, swinging it rows back into the stands over cow corner

Sharma to Morgan, 1 run, Rohit is lucky here, short ball again but Morgan's pull found the leg-side sweeper

Sharma to Bopara, 1 run, Bopara carefully works this with his wrists to deep square. Wanted two but only one available

End of over 9 (17 runs) England 81/3 (85 runs required from 11 overs, RR: 9.00, RRR: 7.72)

Kohli to Morgan, 1 run, hint of inside edge finds pad and bobbles away. Kohli doing an excellent job here

Kohli to Bopara, 2 runs, Bopara shuffles to leg to try and open up the off but ends up skewing a drive to midwicket. Good running turns one into two

Kohli to Bopara, no run, carefully watched the slower ball. Didn't see it at first and had to pull out an attacking shot and push to midwicket

Kohli to Bopara, 1 run, driven crisply down the ground

Kohli to Morgan, FOUR, excellent from Morgan. Such clear thinking and confidence to carry off his plan. Gets down early and flips this over his shoulder, past the wicketkeeper and short fine leg away for four

End of over 10 (9 runs) England 90/3 (76 runs required from 60 balls, RR: 9.00, RRR: 7.60)

Ashwin to Bopara, 1 run, Bopara content to work a single and get Morgan on strike. Sweeping cagily from outside off stump

Ashwin to Morgan, 1 run, dragged short and Morgan, as is his way, really tries to smash his pull shot. Didn't quite time it though

Ashwin to Bopara, 1 run, Bopara did well to get a bat on this in the end. Ran down and bowler fired it leg side, Bopara adjusted to get a tickle to short fine leg

Kohli to Morgan, FOUR, that'll do nicely for Morgan. Outside edge speeds past Dhoni and away for four

Kohli to Morgan, 1 run, Morgan is up to 30, only needed 17 balls, driven hard to deep point

Kohli to Bopara, 1 run, Bopara edges down the wicket and drives firmly to long-on

Kohli to Morgan, no run, yeesh. That pitched and rolled. Absolute grubber. Shot and Morgan was back to cut but it scuttled under his bat and just past the off stump

Kohli to Morgan, 2 runs, heaved without a lot of timing to straightish midwicket

End of over 12 (10 runs) England 104/3 (62 runs required from 48 balls, RR: 8.66, RRR: 7.75)

Long break for dew-related footmark issues, gives us all a chance for a breather. Praveen is back

Kumar to Morgan, FOUR, after all that Praveen starts with a full-toss down leg that Morgan gleefully whips away for four to fine leg

Kumar to Morgan, 1 run, Morgan looks in fine fettle. Times his cut shot perfectly out to deep cover

Will Bopara fare any better with the extra pace on the ball?

Kumar to Bopara, 1 run, that was neat enough, driven off the back foot to deep point

Kumar to Morgan, 1 run, Morgan skips down the wicket but only to defend with an inside edge. Goes into pad and away to the off side

Kumar to Bopara, 1 leg bye, he can't connect again. Comes down the wicket but Praveen finds the pads and it bobbles away for a single

Kumar to Morgan, FOUR, Wonderful from Morgan. Low full toss but he some how has enough power to shove this over mid-off and away for four

End of over 14 (12 runs) England 122/3 (44 runs required from 36 balls, RR: 8.71, RRR: 7.33)

MM Patel to Morgan, OUT, well well, what have we here! India are celebrating but Morgan is having none of it. Morgan flashed hard towards point where Rohit dived forward to take what looked like a good catch. Very low but it looks like the fingers are under it. Morgan asked for the umpires to take a look and they have gone upstairs. We know the TV replay is uncertain with these but it looks like a clean catch... OUT. The third umpire had a long look but gave it. Right decision you'd think and a very big wicket, too

EJG Morgan c Sharma b MM Patel 49 (39m 27b 7x4 1x6) SR: 181.48

Samit Patel is the new man.

MM Patel to Patel, no run, starts by pushing a drive to mid-off

MM Patel to Patel, 1 run, nervy from Patel, inside edge dribbles leg side and Bopara calls him through

MM Patel to Bopara, 1 run, pressure on Bopara to find his range now. Drives this firmly towards long-off, might have been two if Morgan was at the other end. As it is, just a single

MM Patel to Patel, 1 run, Patel drops and runs to cover. That'll do for now for England

MM Patel to Bopara, no run, excellent over from Munaf. Bopara pushes to cover and Samit had come a long way down, had the throw at the bowler's end been allowed to hit the stumps Samit may well have been out

End of over 16 (3 runs) England 137/4 (29 runs required from 24 balls, RR: 8.56, RRR: 7.25)

Kumar to Bopara, 1 run, shortish ball is whipped to deep square. Again just a single

Kumar to Patel, 1 run, Samit looked like he wanted to go big here, edging down the track and outside leg. But Praveen's length and line was solid and it was just pushed to deep point

Kumar to Bopara, FOUR, four! Bopara gets the boundary but his heart would have been in his mouth for a moment. Full-toss crunched very hard down to cow corner where Munaf ran in, slid past the ball and it went away for four

Kumar to Bopara, 1 run, low full toss this time is flipped to deep square

Kumar to Patel, 1 run, good yorker to end the over and Praveen's spell. Samit digs out a single to midwicket

End of over 17 (9 runs) England 146/4 (20 runs required from 18 balls, RR: 8.58, RRR: 6.66)

Vinay Kumar to Patel, 1 run, not the most perfect piece of timing from Samit. Thuds a low full toss to long-off

Vinay Kumar to Bopara, no run, Bopara tried to give himself room outside leg to smash through off bit couldn't time the shot. Valuable dot ball and the pressure heaps back onto Bopara

Vinay Kumar to Bopara, 1 run, Bopara called two when he hit it but his leg-side clip went straight to deep midwicket

Vinay Kumar to Patel, 2 runs, again a top-edged slugs plugs into space. Samit tried to heave it leg side but could't get it ideally

Vinay Kumar to Patel, 2 runs, Samit down the pitch to smash wide of long-off, who slips momentarily and allows Bopara to return to the non-striker's end for a sharp two

Vinay Kumar to Patel, 1 run, Samit down the wicket to drive down the ground for a single

MM Patel to Patel, no run, good start from Munaf! Touch slower and Samit ran down and swung past the ball

MM Patel to Patel, 1 run, haha! Samit has snapped his bat here. Odd. The handle has snapped at its base. Bottom edge as he tried to slug it out to the off side and the bat just flew away. Samit was left holding a handle with no bat at the end of it!

MM Patel to Bopara, 1 run, excellent bowling from Munaf again. Perfect yorker that is just about jabbed out

MM Patel to Patel, 1 run, good timing from Samit but still just a single. Samit backed away, Munaf went full and outside off and it was driven hard to deep cover

MM Patel to Bopara, no run, dot ball! Excellent from Munaf. Slower ball that Bopara heaved at and missed

MM Patel to Bopara, no run, brilliant from Munaf! That over has got India right back in it. Yorker slips past Bopara as he aims a drive. India must be favourites now!

End of over 19 (3 runs) England 156/4 (10 runs required from 6 balls, RR: 8.21, RRR: 10.00)

    • RS Bopara 31 (36b 2x4)

    • MM Patel 4-0-25-2
    • R Vinay Kumar 3-0-22-0

We have a Super Over if we tie, so look out. Vinay will bowl the last over and Samit Patel will start with the strike. Extra cover and midwicket are saving the single. Can Samit find the rope?

Vinay Kumar to Patel, 1 wide, wide given. Ooh, that's a harsh call. Samit backed away so Vinay went full and well outside off. It was within the wide-guideline marks though

Vinay Kumar to Patel, FOUR, boundary! Sweet relief but pure luck for England. Samit backed away, bottom edged and it sped past a diving Dhoni away. Five from five!

Vinay Kumar to Patel, FOUR, that will be it! Samit backs away and gets more of this. Squeezed off the top-toe-edge and flew wide of Dhoni and away for four to third man!

Vinay Kumar to Patel, FOUR, finally Samit times one perfectly and finishes it in style! Down the track and smashes it over cover away for four. Punched the air a good four times, clearly meant plenty to him

England win by six wickets Another whitewash then as England win the one-off Twenty20. Good game though, in the end India's slump in the second half of their innings cost them. Jade Dernbach was excellent, as was Eoin Morgan but it needed three desperate boundaries from Samit Patel in the final over to get England over the line. Andrew Miller has the report, which will well worth reading. There's a gallery too. Jade Dernbach is named man of the match for his four wickets. Good, bowlers don't get it enough. Anyway, that's the T20 series done, we won't remember it by the morning. Please join us on Saturday for the start of the ODI series.
