Former Kent amateur and 1965 club president John Arthur Deed died on October 19, aged 79. Educated at Malvern, he failed to gain a Blue in the strong Cambridge era of the early 1920s; but he played a number of valuable innings for Kent between 1924 and 1930, his highest innings being 133 at Edgbaston in 1930, when he batted for three and a half hours and was described by Wisden as 'very painstaking'. With C. G. W. Robson in 1920 he won the Public Schools rackets doubles championship at Queen's.
