In a first-class career that spanned ten seasons and three counties, Kevin Shine took 249 wickets at 36.09, with a best of 8 for 47 for Hampshire against Lancashire at Old Trafford in 1992. He retired from playing in 1998 and went on to become the first-team coach at Somerset, the county at which he had spent the last three seasons of his career. Having never won a major domestic honour as a player, he was at the helm as Somerset won the C&G Trophy in his first season in charge in 2001, but it was as the director of the county academy that he attracted the interest of the England & Wales Cricket Board. A level-four coach and a student of biomechanics, he was named as Troy Cooley's successor as the England fast-bowling coach in February 2006, having seen off more high-profile competitors such as Darren Gough, Allan Donald and Phil DeFreitas.
