Charles James Richardson Whittle, who died on July 4 aged 79, was an aggressive right-handed batsman and occasional legspinner who was in the Sedbergh XI for
three years from 1938 to 1940 but did not go to Christ Church College, Oxford until after the war, during which he served in the Royal Navy. In 1947 Whittle played two games for the university but did not win a blue, and in the same season he played a single game for Oxfordshire.
