ICC Champions Trophy - 2nd semi final

India v Sri Lanka

India won by 8 wickets (with 90 balls remaining)

11.00am Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kusal Perera walk out.

10.50am Confirmed, Chandimal is ruled out due to a groin injury.

All sorts of firecrackers going off as the teams walk out for the national anthems. Our Sri Lanka correspondent Andrew Fernando tweets: "Two best national anthems in the world (imo), about to be played. One positive about India v SL again."

Can it be an India game if someone hasn't complained about Irfan not playing? Kiran Vijayan: "Siddharth, Irfan Pathan's last ODI for India was against Srilanka in Aug 2012. He scored 29 not out and picked 5 for 61. Still...."

Anurag Garg: "Given the way weather may turn out, India should bowl out Bhuvi so that they have to bear less of their 5th bowler's (Ishant Sharma) burden.. !!"

More Irfan fans. Tushar: "I don't understand how can Ishant play every game after bowling so poorly in every match? Only time he looked good was against WI when their batsmen were already struggling. As soon as they had spent some time in the middle, Ishant was hit for boundaries. Irfan deserves to play after bowling well T20 cup in SL and he performed well IPL too for a very poor team."

10.40am India have won the toss and will bowl. A big toss to win that for Dhoni. India are unchanged, two changes to the Sri Lanka team: the vice-captain Dinesh Chandimal is left out, Jeevan Mendis comes in, Thisara Perera takes the place of Shaminda Eranga. Chandimal could have been left out due to a side strain, still waiting for confirmation on that.

VKK: "Anthem should be 'Here comes the sun' by Beatles. its been such a rare sight!!"

Sitanshu Shekhar: "Didn't it Rain by Tom Jones would be more apt. He is afterall Wales's "Greatest Living Treasure"."

VIKAS KAUSHIK: "English Groundsmen will ask for appraisal straightaway after this series. They have worked so hard this tournament. Hope ECB gives them Exceed Expectations."

Noman Yousuf Dandore: "Rain and philosophy remind me, Bob Marley said: Some people feel the rain. Others just get wet!"

Lots of Englishmen sending this in. Nige: "Can we please clarify that the large majority of the rain in this tournament has been in Wales, not England."

10.35am Nagraj says the covers are coming off now. It's still going to be a stop-start day.

Dhoni and Angelo Mathews are on the field waiting for the umpires. Toss anytime now.

Ajay Sawant: "How about the players/umpires/spectators singing - "Raindrop keep falling on my head"!!!! I quite prefer the Manic Street Preachers' version & what more! They are from Wales :) ;)"

10.30am Bad news folks, the main cover is back on, rain expected shortly.

People turning to philosophy/a-wise-man-once-said Rajesh Jain: ""The best thing one can do when it's raining is to let it rain" - by H. W. Longfellow ." Yes, and he also said, "Into each life some rain must fall."

Vaibhav joshi: "We have a saying in Chester. If you can see the Welsh hills, it's going to rain. If you can't see them then it's raining. There's also the definition of an English summer: three hot days and a thunderstorm."

10.25am Sreekanth: ""In the bible it rained for 40 days and 40 nights . They called it a disaster !In England, they call it summer!" :)"

Andy: "i would say that Eurythmics "here comes the rain again" is a more appropriated Anthem of the championship." Oh dear, don't think I can listen to Eurythmics through a tournament.

You can while away some of the half hour left for the game to start by reading Aakash Chopra's piece on the threat posed by Lasith Malinga.

Seem to be a lot of Eurythmics fans today. Abir Utsha: "'Here comes the rain again' by Eurythmics would do justice for old folks like me and rendition of the same song by Hypnogaja for younger ones."

10.20am Toss is set for 10.40am, and play at 11.00am. All that, needless to say, is if there is no more rain. No reduction in overs.

VK: "English Summer Rain by Placebo would be a good fit. Not only have they got the rain covered (English summer rain, seems to last for ages), but also SL vs IND (Always stays the same, nothing ever changes) and South African chokes (Hold your breath and count to ten, And fall apart and start again). I'm pretty sure it's about cricket!"

Biggles: "If India go through and the final is rained off, what happens (as both teams topped their groups)? Net Run Rate?" No, teams share the trophy.

LK: ""But it Rained" by Parikrama is the best for an Indian Fan..."

Anand: "Guess the more basic rhyme "Rain Rain Go Away" would suit best"

GRR: "VK - English summer rain? The people of Cardiff might not appreciate that one."

10.10am There will be a further inspection before a start time is decided.

The diligent Nagraj: "The umpires are still little concerned about the dampness of the outfield. There is no fixed start time at the moment. the groundsmen are using a rope to dry the outfield at the moment as we speak."

Sharad: "No the official song of the tournament has been the bassline of Seven Nation Army sung as Loooord Raviii Jadejaaaa, Loooord Raviii Jadejaaaa, Loooord Raviii Jadejaaaa...." Erm, any other candidates?

Rags: "@Sunil, your luck might ensure that the other 5 SL players will win the Match..Select all 11 SL players..!!!"

Elamaran: "The only time the Indian Rupee goes up is during the toss period :P :P" Factually incorrect but we still like it.

James: "Breaking news: ICC marketing coup! Even the ball has an "official song". "Hit me baby one more time"!"

Karan Kalwani: "Who'll Stop The Rain is good, but given the fact that the majority of the teams are youngsters Rain Over Me by Pitbull ft. Marc Anthony would be my choice." Indeed, if nothing else they'd have heard him at the IPL opening ceremony.

10.00am AMOL: "i think this should have been the official song for Champions Trophy- Who 'll stop the rain by CCR." One of the most popular bands in Indian pubs as well.

The umpires are inspecting the conditions right now. Nagraj Gollapudi writes in from the Cardiff press box that both teams have completed their warm-ups, the outfield isn't as wet as feared, and the floodlights have been switched on.

More from Nagraj: "Aleem Dar and Richard Kettleborough have measured their run-up and marking the spots they will stand also the rain has been a drizzle so not really bad."

Sunil: "I have finally cracked the code to beat SL today. The way my luck works with Fantasy CT I'm going to choose 6 best SL players in my team and India wins for sure."

9.45am The rain has relented, but the wet outfield means the toss has been delayed for sure. They are still hoping for a 10.30am start, but they will have an inspection at 10am

9.25 am The covers are coming off now. Still no sunlight, but the outfield isn't in very poor condition. Well, what do you know - we might start on time after all.

9.10 am There's been a lot of rain in Cardiff this morning, but it's stopped for now. The covers are in place, and there's no hint of sun. There is no reserve day in the schedule, for any of the game in this tournament including the semis and the final. If this game is washed out, India will go through to the final, since they topped their group.

9.00am Greetings all, for a record 55th time in five years it's India v Sri Lanka. The teams have played each other so often that MS Dhoni said they need to spend lesser time discussing match strategy. "You can also cut the extra 15 minutes of time in a team meeting and keep it simple." More than the opponents, both teams will be studiously poring over the weather forecast and boning up on D/L charts.

We've plenty of stories on the site to help you while away your time till the game starts. Here's the match preview, and here's Andrew Fernando on how one of my favourite cricketers, Nuwan Kulasekara, has become something of a cult hero in Sri Lanka. One of the astonishing things in this tournament has been how well India have fielded - MS Dhoni, usually shies away from making big claims, but during this tournament he has repeatedly called his team the best fielding side in the world. Nagraj Gollapudianalyses the improvements in India's fielding.

There's been plenty of talk about this being a chance for Sri Lanka to avenge their defeat in the World Cup final, but Angelo Mathews has swatted aside that idea. India are clearly the team to beat in this tournament, having swept through the league phase without much of a fuss. Can anybody beat India, our Switch Hit team wonders , while in this video Mark Butcher explains why he thinks Sri Lanka are more than capable of tripping up India.

Ishant is back

44.1

I Sharma to Mendis, FOUR, a shortish ball on leg stump, Mendis swivels and helps that along towards fine leg for four, not the best of bowling from Ishant

44.2

I Sharma to Mendis, 1 run, better from Ishant, a fuller ball outside off, guided towards backward point

Mudhabir: "If this game was played on 1975, Srilanka are in commanding position with wickets in hand for last 5 overs."

44.3

I Sharma to Mathews, 1 wide, short ball outside off, was that too high? yes, it was

Umang: "SL have clearly become too defensive. With 6 wickets in hand, why would you not send Kulasekara/Perara in the powerplay?" I would have liked that too.

44.3

I Sharma to Mathews, 1 run, length ball on off stump, dabbed towards backward point for a quick single, Mendis could have been in trouble if there was a direct hit from Jadeja, he misses, and that's Mathews' fifty

45.2

Ashwin to Mendis, 1 run, reverse-swept in front of point, stopped at deep point

45.3

Ashwin to Mathews, 1 wide, Ashwin has bowled plenty of deliveries down the leg side, Mathews has played most of them, this time he gets his body out of the way

45.3

Ashwin to Mathews, 1 run, dropped, Mathews looks to slog this one out of the park, he top edges it towards long-on, Kohli had plenty of time to get under it, Kohli misjudges how far he is from the rope, and doesn't move back enough, tries to catch that behind him and he drops it, the ball drops dead behind him and doesn't roll over for four

45.4

Ashwin to Mendis, 1 run, flat delivery on the pads, helped to short fine leg

45.5

Ashwin to Mathews, OUT, Ashwin gets him this time, the carrom ball does the job, Mathews again looking for the big hit over the leg side, he edges it once more and the ball swirls towards cover where Bhuvneshwar settles under it and pouches it safely

46.5

I Sharma to NLTC Perera, OUT, this time he connects, but not well enough to clear the man at deep midwicket, Ishant continues to keep it short, Perera swipes and can't clear the long boundary and he's gone for a duck, three man in the deep there but he still backed himself to get a six

49.3

49.4

Ashwin to Dilshan, no run, another attempted reverse-sweep, wide outside leg, he can't connect

49.5

Ashwin to Dilshan, 1 run, pulled powerfully towards square leg for a single

49.6

Ashwin to Malinga, FOUR,

181 doesn't look like a sufficient total but given how tough the conditions were very difficult for the batsmen so it isn't a puny total either. There was seam for the quicks, and turn for the spinners. There was so much movement for the pacers that MS Dhoni bowled for only the second time in his ODI career. Sri Lanka's batsmen had no option but to be patient, and couldn't really force the pace later in the innings. There was a reviving stand between captain Angelo Mathews and Mahela Jayawardene, after which they would perhaps have expected to reach closer to the 200 mark.

The Indian bowlers all did their part, Bhuvneshwar and Umesh getting the new ball to swerve around, Ishant extracting surprising amount of bounce and the spinners keeping it tight.

Best of all, the rain stayed away, defying all pre-match predictions.

Ansari: "So... in a low scoring inning... one batsman has a strike rate of 350 !!!"

I'll be back for second innings comms at around 3.10pm. See you then.
