South Africa have had a few of their parties cruelly crashed by teams world over, but today they spoiled India's when it was only a small gathering. Having been knocked out of the World Twenty20 because Pakistan beat Australia, South Africa won the toss India wanted to win most, kept India down to 152, and passed 121, ensuring India would be eliminated from the tournament on net run rate.

India would have loved to chase and know what they needed to do with the bat to push their net run rate of -0.452 over Pakistan's 0.273, who are now through to the semi-final. However, batting first, all India could hope of doing was set up a huge total and try to win by a margin of around 30. South Africa's bowling, though, was too strong to clobber.

It was not all fun and games for South Africa either. Faf du Plessis laid bare the flaws in their strategy in the games leading up to their final inconsequential match. Watching du Plessis score a fluent 65 off 38, South Africa's think tank would have felt a surge of mixed emotions. After du Plessis got out, all but ensuring India's ouster, that think tank would have watched in horror as the last five wickets fell for 24 runs and South Africa lost by one run. Another heartbreaking loss ended arguably their worst campaign at a World Cup, across formats. It was Gary Kirsten's ninth defeat in nine matches as coach in World Twenty20 Super Eights.

Smart stats

  • When South Africa reached 122, it ensured that Pakistan would be the fourth team in the semi-finals. Pakistan became the only team to make the semi-finals of each of the four World Twenty20 tournaments.
  • India's win is their fifth in seven Twenty20 internationals against South Africa. India have also won three of the four meetings between the two teams in the World Twenty20.
  • The win is the eighth by a margin of one run in Twenty20 internationals and the first for India. It is the third such win in World Twenty20 matches.
  • Faf du Plessis' strike rate during his 65 (171.05) is the second-highest for South Africa in World Twenty20 matches (50-plus scores only). The highest is 232.35 by AB de Villiers, during his 79 against Scotland in 2009.
  • Zaheer Khan's 3 for 22 is his second-best bowling performance in Twenty20 internationals. His best (4 for 19) also came in the World Twenty20, in 2009 against Ireland.

The scenes towards the end were in contrast to the ones seen after the day's first match at the venue. After that game, both Australia - assured of semi-final qualification - and Pakistan - very close to it - went off smiling, never mind the actual result. Both India and South Africa were dejected, never mind the result.

After their innings, however, India had given themselves a decent chance of staying alive, thanks to a Suresh Raina-led recovery from 36 for 3. Around Raina, Yuvraj Singh hit 21 off 15 in the middle overs to boost India, and the finishing touches were provided by MS Dhoni, who squeezed out an unbeaten 23 off 13 in his unorthodox way.

India's openers looked too keen to hit, and fell inside the Powerplay. Morne Morkel's disconcerting length got Gautam Gambhir to play on. Virender Sehwag hit Robin Peterson for a six, but swung all around an even slower delivery to lose his off stump the next ball. In between those wickets, Virat Kohli was dismissed, strangled down the leg side by Jacques Kallis.

Yuvraj then displayed the silken touch he had before he left the game with illness, lofting two of the better-timed sixes. He got too ambitious, though, trying to whip a full Morkel delivery from the off-stump line and was bowled. Rohit Sharma once again scored a disappointing 25 off 27 before falling lbw to a poor sweep.

Raina, though, looked good right from the start, and played good-looking extra-cover drives to give India some momentum. Dhoni joined him with brute power, and the two combined to take an even 40 off the last four overs. Given the way their spinners have performed in the tournament, India would have entertained thoughts of the improbable, but they bowled six overs of seam at the top of the innings.

They took two early wickets when South Africa were tentative, but once the industrious du Plessis began charging at Zaheer and Irfan, the zing was lost. Yuvraj revived India's hopes with a wicket first ball, but du Plessis was batting on a different plane. Every shot he played seemed to yield results, and the odd mis-hit would find a way to go for couples. India's fielding didn't help.

Once du Plessis fell with the score at 95 for 4 in the 13th over, though, India were hoping for one of those infamous South African collapses. And they were just hoping, which showed in the defensive fields and Ashwin being kept for three overs out of the last seven, when there was practically nothing left to play for.

The collapse arrived, but it was too late for India. In the 17th over, with wickets falling, South Africa reached 122, much to the joy of the thousands of Pakistan supporters in the ground.

The game took a surreal turn after that. So close run it was, yet so devoid of edge. It came down to 14 required off the last over. Balaji bowled length; Albie Morkel smacked him for six, and was bowled next ball. Albie's younger brother Morne was the No. 11. He got a long hop from Balaji, and deposited it in the stands. India were about to lose this one, this was to be a dreadful evening for them. However, the final mistake was South Africa's, and Morne Morkel missed a straight length ball and was bowled.

Innings Dot balls 4s 6s PP Overs 16-20 NB/Wides
India 43 13 3 36-3 43-2 1/0
South Africa 44 11 5 46-2 44-6 1/0

It is unfortunate that Dohni don't have the luxury Hafiz have and that is bowling resources.Pakistan can bowl 20 overs through spinners. No country can do that in this tournament.

Posted by   on (October 3, 2012, 0:12 GMT)

The new India selectors need to locate replacements for Sachin, Viru, Sehwag, Rohit (for this format), Zaheer (despite some decent performance in a couple of matches, his fielding and batting are over the hill, even for a bowler), and persist with and groom a handful of young pacers and spinners. For spinning dept, we are just managing with two batsmen-spinners ( don't want to call them all-rounders, in the true sense of the term)-- Yuvraj & Ashwin.

Well played India, and congrats to Pakistan - hope either you guys or the West Indies go all the way!! I am curious, though - was the pitch a "bowl first" pitch, or is bowling first a usual tactic due to D/L fears? I always thought teams liked to bat first, and I can't see South Africa choosing to bowl first just to spite India's chances of qualifying when they themselves have nothing to gain.

I wonder why there is no add comemts in Pak vs Aus match report ?

Posted by Badgerofdoom on (October 3, 2012, 0:03 GMT)

Unlucky for India going out on run rate but it has to be asked, what happened to SA? Not a single point! I think SL are favorites to win from here.

Gents, please note this data. We all know India played too slowly at the later half of their innings against Pak which hurt them in the NRR. Exactly how fast India should have played against Pak ?? India needed 129 to win and they took 17 overs to score that. If Ind had finished that score in 13 overs India would be in SF now. My calculation is of course after the fact. But Dhoni & co should have known to score 129 as fast as possible to take the NRR advantage even at the cost of more wickets. Most teams batting second chasing low score, would try ~ 10 rpo, but not India. Such is India's management and advisers! (I dont expect Dhoni to do the math. It is not his job). Even if India had managed 9 rpo, Aus would have found it difficult to give away this much advantage to Pak in the Aus-Pak match which would have brought the NRR closer and better chances. Every one deserves only to the extent of his hard work.

why would australia avoid playing india when they beat india on regular basis, they win against india more than they win against pakistan. they usually struggle against pakistan and lose to pakistan and sri lanka more than they lose to india.

australia struggled against pakistan in UAE they bowled out in the first t20I under 100 and in the 2nd t20I they lost in super over which they had it won then won the meaningless last t20I so they lost the series 1-2.Then today again they struggled against pakistan bowling attack they lost early wickets so they were making sure their runrate stays over pakistan and they qualify for the semis and when they reached 112 they celebrated it nothing wrong with it. and about who would australia prefer to face in the final? think about it again ? they chased down indias 140 runs inside 15 overs u all watch cricket and know cricket seriously? they would rather face india over pakistan any day!

As an Indian fan, I am disappointed with the format for this year's world cup. Here is my take on the semi-final: 1. Fully deserving: Sri Lanka (3 good wins, with different players stepping up) 2. Next Best: Australia, India and Pakistan (Aus relied too heavily on Shane Watson but got results, India and Pakistan should have both got through but were unfortunately in the same group; India's only loss came against a marauding Watson and Pakistan's only loss against their bogey team) 3. Just about good: West Indies and New Zealand (WI did not deserve to defeat NZ when they kept having batting collapses, they just got lucky with the grouping. NZ deserved it with two super overs but they were unlucky) 4. Poor performers: South Africa and England (just shockingly poor performances from two of the most balanced teams in the competition)

haha what i should ? come on guys before todays match india and pak wer on -.43 and -.45 offcourse not big defference .... australia who was know for his great chases in tournament pakistan outclassed them by 30+ and india won by 1 run and that was also mistake from morkels stupid batting 2 balls 2 runs even if they put bat they mightt get lol why iam hearing 4 out 5 4time all out ....pak lso played against SA and AUSSIEs same with india who won better ? india didnt won from pak with quick chase pak deserves the place in semis....and everybody know hwo loves cricket pakistan are cornered tigers and when wht they do no one can predict abut it now stop crying on rain and bla bla factor .... before match australia was +1.7 and where pak brought them....did india out classed aussies? all we got 3 games and results were on the behalf of 3 games not on 1....aus chase 140 in less than 15 and pak's 150 id something big even they hardly chased 112 ....so may the best team win

Thanks to some SL and Pakistani fans who have spoken with sanity compared to a few earlier ones. Thanks for appreciating the efforts of the Indian team. It means a lot to our team when they have fans from other nations also rooting for them. That's what cricketers live for, and that's what they strive for throughout their careers. I hope all this bad mouthing of team India disappears from Cricinfo in the future. Team India have played brilliantly in this tournament. Tough luck but there is always another chance down the line. The game moves on.

I am happy with Indian effort winning 4 out of 5 matches, but Indian team still need to learn how to take control of situations with bowling and how to improve batting...Lot of serious work required in improving team standards in fitness and team selection should be good..

@cham204: I don't think Indian cricketers show off. You have got a WRONG perception about team India. I recommend you change that. It's the media that bolsters a cricketer's image and I don't have to tell you how notorious the Indian media is in that regard. Indian cricketers are some of the most wonderful individuals you will ever meet. They are as kind as they are skilled in the sport. Sehwag to Kohli, all magnificent players with humble souls. Having met quite a few of them myself I can vouch for them 100%.

Pakistan and Australia went to the finals to meet Sirilanks and westendies. while India and south Afirca went to the airport to meet New zeland and England!!!

Well today Paksitan showed that they are the future champions of the T20 format. not only they put out the best match of the series. i mean beating the best team of the tournament by their spinners. the ausssies were clueless to how to play these guys but also by reaching the semi final 4 consective times in the t20 history that they are a very solid opponent. Im not sure but this team has produce the best qulity bowlers in the cricket history. in the 80's and 90's they had the best fast bollowing attck with tons of differnet bowlers. they were the team who introduced spin and things such as reverse swing to the cricket world. and now in the 21 century they have exceptional spinners and they introduced dusra's and theesr'a!!! kudos to them im sure they are going to beat Sirilanka and make the final for the third time out of 4 t20 world cups. well done Pakistan. im not from your country but i salute ur team!!!

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 23:46 GMT)

It took combined efforts of Australia,Pakistan & South Africa to prevent Team India from making it into the semis inspite of the fact that India won 4 out the 5 games it played, and humiliating 2 of the teams on their way - England and Pakistan with convincing class & margins. That says a lot about everything. And everyone commenting on this page, will agree to this simple fact,if not in open but in their hearts.Well played Team India !

Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (October 2, 2012, 23:46 GMT)

@Waseem8220: Thanks for the kind words but I have to disagree with you on your comments regarding India ONLY being able to win at home. I strongly suggest you visit some past stats here on Cricinfo with regards to India's good showing in limited overs cricket away from home. They have been consistently winning many games all over the world in 50 overs and T20s. It's the tests in 2011 that have taken a bad turn. I am sure they will address that issue in due course. India are a wonderful and powerful team with immense talent. They can win anywhere as they showed in this tournament beating 4 out of 5 teams. Anyway.. fair play to Pakistan. They decided their fate on their own terms and didn't depend on India to do them any favours. So good on them and good luck.

Congratulations Team India upon win over SA in this match.. Narrow one, but a win is win...Now analyzing where India stands now?? India is knocked out because of bad team selection by selectors. Out of form n Unfit players are selected. Fitness was not given prominence which should be given when playing T20 as you need more of athleticism on field and many Indian players like Zaheer, Balaji, Sehwag are lacking it...Selectors had no forethought and planning. And Dhoni added to that is reserved in selecting his bunch of players he is more comfortable like Zaheer. There is neither good selection of players like Selectors , neither is good team formation by Dhoni. Both are blame worthy. But selectors are more blame worthy. Hope Indian selectors learn from mistakes they are making and Dhoni learns his mistakes too. No need to worry too much as we have bench strength in bowling but need to be given chances... I Congratulate all the 4 teams that qualified for semis. Best of luck to your teams

@KabaabRoll...."Australia meet West Indians at Colombo on the 5th, Pakistan meets Sri Lankans at Colombo on the 4th, India meet South Africa at the airport- tonight." That was hilarious man! Indian Fans...take it easy guys. India played well but the two better teams are in the semis from that group. There is no point arguing ifs and buts and trying to find excuses. Pakistan and Australia played better cricket overall period. Better luck next time, in the end it's just a game.

Despite the feeling I have for majority of Indian fans for being so arrogant at the time of winning, I would like to say that India played very good cricket this time. I think there's no perfect world no. 1 team at the moment, esp. in T20s. But India have some quality batsmen who can change the game on their own. Kohli n Yuvraj are 2 of them. The only thing to be figured out is to get some good pace bowlers (who can bowl on batting friendly tracks as well) and 1 bowling all rounder in the team and India can become the most dangerous team of the world. Also new openers are required for this format. Gambhir n Sehwag are very good in ODIs n Tests, but they don't suit this format of cricket. Dhoni, as a captain is good, it's just the team selection which was not good enough for this tournament.

Well, i m glad to see some comments from 'big hearted Indian fans' congratulating Pak and appreciating our victory. Thanks to all Indian brothers! and let me tell all Indian people that they dont need to feel sad or disappointed becuz they played v well, it was just "luck factor" which eliminated them from semi's but overall honestly really great performance by indian team. I would rate both indian and pak performance same in this tournament (so far as far as pak concerned) both were inconsistent. A lot of positives for indians, Kohli as always and will always be and Dhoni, i m a big admirer of you, great captain really, this is how leader is supposed to be. Good luck to Pak for semi's, hope they perform well against difficult SL and once again to all Indian bros, u really played well! there is nothing to worry abt!

@Agila Very exciting team, who have won 2 out of their 9 Super 8s games in last 3 years. And since India have been able to defeat Pak for the past 3-4 games consecutively, they're supposed to be the best team even if they don't reach the semis or finals in those tournament. lol

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 23:19 GMT)

India could have fielded a far better team for this stupid Format. You cannot have passengers in the side. Yuviraj is the ideal bloke for this game he could hit sixes bat well field well and bowl too. Dhoni you are right about him but why did you play certain players when there were many at home?

Posted by immithegr8 on (October 2, 2012, 23:16 GMT)

I am not here to fight. The following is quoted from the cricinfo commentary for the match between India and Australia. "9.14pm It has started to drizzle. Covers are coming on. Within a couple of minutes most of the covers are in place. 9.17pm The rain abruptly stops. Covers are going off."

It rained for THREE MINUTES during this match, and that was enough to make such a difference on the Indian bowling?..I mean..come on :P..especially given how fast the Sri Lankan ground staff gets the covers in and covers the whole ground. This is nothing short of pathetic.

Posted by indianpunter on (October 2, 2012, 23:00 GMT)

India were annihilated by Australia and have no reason to complain. Its is time to make changes to the t-20 team. Old sloggers ( sehwag), unfulfilled talent ( Sharma) and unfit men need to go. ( Gambhir, Yuvraj). India were poor and their fans ( including me) have no reason to whinge away. @Nampally, your logic is flawed. the rules are made before the competition starts. and what happens when there is a 3 way tie? It is your frustration that shows thru the flawed logic

After the attitude displayed by Yuvraj and Kohli in the match against Pakistan, it's absolutely delightful to watch them get knocked out - and Pakistan playing a role in it. Have a safe ride back home, team India. Chak de and all that.

152 was always a below par score on this pitch..Having said that the star studded batting line up failed once again to post a big total. Somewhere the approach is wrong. Too much blame is given to the bowling department and the batting is overlooked. To win matches consistently both have to be immensely improved to see better results. IPL is also to be blamed for the poor form of various players as it has tired some players..instead they should consider playing more Int'l T20 games to do better at the Int'l level.

Indian fans (I mean only the pundits & gurus from India): Your margin of victory is not big enough but your mouths are. Just accept that you weren't the better team and give some credit to people who outplayed you. P.S.: Don't torch Dhoni's house... ;) Pakistan & Sri Lankan fans: Enough now. India learnt their lesson the hard way and we don't have to thrash them for what they say. Let's hope we'll see a good fight between Pak & SL. -Sri Lankan fan

Posted by Al_Bundy1 on (October 2, 2012, 22:39 GMT)

India was done by their selectors. The selectors need to look at last IPL averages when selecting a team for T20. They should have selected Parvinder Awana or Munaf Patel instead of Dinda. Even Vinay Kumar is better than Dinda. Chawla was one of the worst spinners in previous IPL. They should have selected Rahul Sharma or Iqbal Abdulla instead of Chawla. Rohit Sharma has been a flop. There's no need to play him any more. Gambhir seems to be done too. Give a chance to Rahane, Tiwary, Pujara, etc. In spite of the weak selection, Dhoni and his team did better than expected.

Posted by intrepid_khan on (October 2, 2012, 22:38 GMT)

hey indian fans plz be proud on your team which at the start of the WC was not supposed to do this well ..winning 4 outta 5 matches is Awesome :) its just that it was really a group of death !! having aus pak ind and even sa in one group is so irrational ... according to me these teams would have been the semi finalist had the 2 of them were in the other group ! but with due respect i didn't like indian players attitude during the match against us ! Kohli is even more awesome then the great sachin but i respect sachin bc of his nature, Kohli needs to learn from Dhoni n sachin how to be a gentleman :)

I'm really happy by the way India played the whole tournament with the exception of the match versus the Aussies.

We did win 4 out of 5 games which is terrific!Congrats PAK on reaching the semis.Hope you go on and win the cup :)

Harbhajan should have been played today in place of balaji and i was quite surprised that ashwin was introduced to bowl in the 9th over.Weird stuff from Dhoni.

India had a good team but failed to show its strengths. Beating Pakistan was good owing to some excellent bowling and batting but today, Indians seemed out of real touch. MS Dhoni remained defensive and at no point tried to attack South Africa to restrict them at 122. Bad luck Team India, you had a tougher pool. From a Pakistani

Posted by niksaims on (October 2, 2012, 22:31 GMT)

Bring back.. Yusuf Pathan and Robin Uthappa. These are the 2 players you need when you are playing t20. The amount of chances other big names have got.. Incompare to that Robbie and Yusuf deserves chances and then only you can compete to the good teams. You need fire power in T20s not the technical batsman. Lets hope this new selection comitte make some changes and bring this 2 deadly dangerous weapon and launch them in coming t20s and limited over games.

Posted by Ganesh1015 on (October 2, 2012, 22:29 GMT)

This comment might sound as though I am blaming the format…if that is the case so be it…..can someone who is supporting this kind of a format in a major ICC event explain how India is out of the world T20 even after winning 4 matches when compared to WI who won only 2 and are in the semis….

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 22:28 GMT)

Well, the bottom line is that Pakistan entered 4th T20 World cup Semi Final by beating unbeaten Australia and made India exit from the tournament in one go. Its like 'To have one's cake and eat it too'.

It's like celebrating your neighbour's wife's pregnancy because you know who is actually behind it.

Posted by Texmex on (October 2, 2012, 22:28 GMT)

I thought India played very well but were not strategic and I fault the team management for that.

If they had won against Pakistan in 15 instead of 17 overs (remember they lost only 2 wickets) their RR would have qualified instead of Pak. I have to credit Pak that they made India work harder for the winning runs even though they knew they were going to lose! This was unlike India's strategy against Australia when they seem to have given up! Also in the Australia game we knew spinners were having hard time. Why not change original plans and bowl Pathan and Zaheer first off?

Have to say after doing all the hard work by hitting a 6 off the 4th ball of the last over MM seemed to lose his head when all him and Steyn needed was a run of each of the last 2 balls. Have to say SA seem to have become a different side since reaching the super 8s stage and India were probably unlucky to get lose just one match - albeit heavily - against an inspired Watson/Australia and find themselves out of the tournament. Oh well

Cpt.Meanster: my dear brother it is fact pakistan never win against india in any ICC trophy but it is also true pakistan is better side then india in any thing batting bowling what we did in last 4 t20 trophies we are playing 4th semi final, india is a team which can win in their home but he never win against any team abroad. it is time for u pick some bowlers from domestic who have some talent and then groom them. also change dhoni and give captaincy to Ghambir or Kohli,

Posted by hvijay.1985 on (October 2, 2012, 22:21 GMT)

Congrats to Pakistan! We (India) just weren't good enough in this tournament. Hope Pakistan goes all the way and wins! All the best.

Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (October 2, 2012, 22:18 GMT)

As an Indian fan, I am PROUD of our boys !!! One of the BEST teams of this tournament all round (winning 4 out of 5 games). Even with such a weak bowling line up we managed to show heart and spirit and bowled out the opposition so many times in a row and that too in a T20 game. Hats off !! Sure, we are all disappointed but this is only a sport. Winning and losing is part of the game. I feel sorry for all those Pakistani and Sri Lankan fans bad mouthing such a wonderful Indian team. They keep forgetting their own team could be the next loser in this tournament. Guys, take it easy. There is always another time and I am sure Team India will have a better answer next time around. God bless !

Posted by Suryawanshi_ on (October 2, 2012, 22:18 GMT)

Not at all disappointed by Performance of India. It was a good series. India is only getting better. Contrast that with SL, its top 3 batsmen are 35ish and no new talent in sight yet, good luck for the future.

India now has the chance to strenthen its side with all the bilaterals, trilaterals untill the next WC.

It is surprising and funny to see how releived the SL, PAK fans are.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 22:17 GMT)

so much hatred against India for no reason. They won 4 out of the 5 games, and comprehensively won 3 of those matches. All those Sri Lankan fans hating on India out there? Guess what? Your up against a rampant side in the semi final that I'm supporting , and you better win considering your on home turf, and since you had it much easier than india, pakistan, or australia considering the super eight group you were in. Good Luck to Pak, looking forward to a Pakistan Australia final, with Pak taking it all.

To all those who talking about Team India packing their bags, you better go cheer your team..everyone know whom you did "NOT" prefer to face going further into the next set of matches! I am sure going to bet on seeing the same grim faces at the end of matches not so long ago! Love it or Hate it..India is an exciting team, with some exciting talent. Period. PS: I find nothing wrong with Indian fans cheering their team. Atleast they aint as comical as many others who keep talking after being thrashed many a time!

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 22:13 GMT)

This was just bad luck for Indian team. I am happy that Pakistan are in semi finals. However I think Aus, Pak and India should have been semi finals because they are very strong. They each had a bad day and they each had strong day. However come up with this fixture, I do not understand the logic. The other group is just terrible no offence to the teams, but they aren't good enough for this format. If all teams had played against every single team, I am pretty confident that Aus, Pak and India would have been in semi finals. Indian supporters should not feel bad, I think they should think that they won the world cup because they beat Pakistan LOL I mean come on I think for Indians and Pakistanis, India vs Pakistan is bigger than the final :P. So in the end well played India better luck next time.

Posted by HislopXI on (October 2, 2012, 22:12 GMT)

India's demise continues. Firstly they are annihilated by Australia 4-0 last summer, now they are bundled out before the Semi-Finals. It appears India's reign as a top team was very short lived. Ageing players and very few top class players coming through only means one thing, a sub-standard team that plays most of it's games at home. Ahh, just like the old days!

Posted by wonderstar1 on (October 2, 2012, 22:11 GMT)

@Herath-uk you must be living in a delusional world.lol.. SL beating India once in a blue moon. did ur memory does not work beyond certain worldcup matches or do i need to remind you? 1999 WC, 2003 WC, most important of all 2011 WC, hope u have gained some memory now.

Posted by cham204 on (October 2, 2012, 22:11 GMT)

Guys, you have to admit that India is not in the finals because you other teams have played better Cricket. No doubt India has better individual players like Koli, Shivag, Raina, Doni etc. But, this time Aus and Pak have outplayed them and that is the reality. These rules where there from the beginning and your team knows the rules. SO PLEASE ACCEPT IT and support your team whether you win or loose.

Well done Aus and Pak, you are in semis........ :)

Posted by AH_USA on (October 2, 2012, 22:10 GMT)

I am a Pakistani and I am happy that PAK reached the semis. However, I feel that the format of this tournament shoud be that the top four teams from the tournament should reach the semis which is not the case right now. Now to the IND/SA game. I believe that Dhoni should have tried his part time spinners in place of Balaji. The ball was turning as was obvious from Ashwin's bowling and was keeping low as was seen while Yuvraj was bowling. Dhoni should have taken the risk and tried a part time spinner at some point. He was trying to defend a low score of 122 and had nothing to loose. Good luck to PAK in the semis.

Posted by torsha on (October 2, 2012, 22:05 GMT)

Well done pak that u beat Australia and that was very well done. India.. well they were good side. Winning 4 out of 5 games is perfect but bad luck it was indeed. Feel for India really. And for pak fans, we appreciate your win but your attitude towards India is never going to change, isn't it? Look at WI and how they got into semis..lol

Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (October 2, 2012, 22:03 GMT)

@Ravi Shankar Singh: WELL SAID man !! This is the Indian spirit. We were VERY good in this whole tournament barring that 1 game vs the Aussies. That loss proves that this T20 tournament is basically a WIN ALL tournament. Congratulations anyway to Pakistan. They are now in the semis. However, their fans should stop crowing too loudly even before the break of dawn. This is only a sport after all. God bless India !!

Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (October 2, 2012, 21:54 GMT)

@Areeb Ali: I think it's only fair he supports SL because many Pakistanis today were supporting SA. You could have asked them all to support only Pakistan !! Where were you my dear ?

Posted by AneYako on (October 2, 2012, 21:54 GMT)

@Agila: You do realize Mendis holds the 'second' best record for bowling figures in T20 too yes? That was against the AUS..with batsmen like Warner and Watson...you know..the very same guys that gave the indian team that embarrassing defeat recently. I know it's a sad day for you guys and must be a bit bitter but at least try and get the facts straight

Posted by Syed_imran_abbas on (October 2, 2012, 21:53 GMT)

Dhoni should consider quitting captaincy in T20,s. India is lucky to have Kohli otherwise their batting isn't as good as it use to be. To be fair this group was a very tight one.. so margin for all teams was very less. I think the best 2 teams of this group went through.

Posted by AzMachineMallah on (October 2, 2012, 21:52 GMT)

@amit patel not sure why you are having a go at Wasim akram the guy is talking sense... no one would ever say india had bowling stregnth even Dhoni said that. the fact that they did well against pakistan probably says more about Pak batsman being weak....

Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (October 2, 2012, 21:51 GMT)

To all Indian fans: I think you guys should take it easy. There is no use of trying to convince these Pakistanis and their Sri Lankan brethren. Both of these sets of fans forget that this is just a game and that too a T20. I am one of the biggest fans of T20 but even I understand the unpredictable nature of this format. I request all Indian fans to wish those teams well and show them that we are a much better class of fans. There is no use of bad mouthing their teams. Our Indian boys did a SPLENDID job in this World T20 over all. There is always a next time. So hope for a better future. This is not the end of the world.

Posted by CricketRockStar on (October 2, 2012, 21:50 GMT)

Good to play Semi with Srilanka..Indians could win but unfortunately they need good weather + IPL crowd + 100% decision favouring them + other team agreed to lose (like Pak) and blah blah..if thats all present..then india surely win...

Posted by AzMachineMallah on (October 2, 2012, 21:49 GMT)

@Nampally your head to head rule is flawed as there were 3 teams with equal points and we beat aus so and aus beat india and india beat pak... so which team would go through on your proposed head to head?... BTW india played well unfortunately all four teams in this group were much stronger than the other group not sure who came up with that but it didnt look right.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 21:49 GMT)

Well done all Asian teams. It was quite entertaining. Cricket is just a game and it depends on the day. I just want to ask one question to my Indian friends. "You are great nation with huge population. All of you love cricket more than anything else. How come your bowling attack is not as good as your batting?" It is unfortunate that India lost one match only and they are out. I am from Pakistan and all the time support India after Pakistan. I hope the game of cricket will bring both nations closer.

Posted by Herath-UK on (October 2, 2012, 21:49 GMT)

It is surprising that Pak have never beaten India in a WC match whereas Sri Lanka have knocked India out from WC several times.Sri Lanka have lost another great opportunity to do the same this time because India failed to qualify. Ranil Herath - Kent

Many Indian fans are sad our team did not make it but at the same time they are also happy for Pakistan. There will be bad apples on both sides. It's only a sport. The best team will win eventually. India was by far one of the better teams in whole tournament, they won 4 of the 5 games they played, they bowled out the opposition 4 times in a 20-20 game!!!, its just bad luck. Its time ICC start analyzing the reasons for this stupid format, where the top ranked teams from the initial stages play in one group and bottom ranked teams play in the a different group, you dont have to be a genious to figure out that the group India eneded up was the toughest group wheras the other group was weak. There is no doubt that the eventual winner is going to from the tiugh group with either Australia or pakistan winning it

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 21:43 GMT)

First of all many Congrats to all PAk fans for reaching into semis! as i said expect the UNEXPECTED from Pakistan :) Now i must appreciate Indian team efforts (specially Kohli and Yuvi) they played really well against us and beat us comfortably but badly lost to AUS and narrowly won against SA which cost them T20wc. Then thanks to SA team specially Du plessi to chase down the target of 121 at the end thanks to all Srilankan brothers who supporting us throughout the tournament :)

@Tru3_kiLL3r: Well I am sure they will enjoy their popcorns even more should Pakistan or SL go out of the tournament. What would be even more sweet than see both of those teams go crashing out ! Then I am sure the Indian fans will celebrate with song and dance. Heck, there could be a public holiday across India. Such comments from non-Indians is what invites the wrath of the Indian fan base. It's fine that you people let out these meaningless banter across but also be prepared to take some of your own medicine back.

Posted by sirviv on (October 2, 2012, 21:41 GMT)

MS Dhoni had a cool answer to it all... "If the rain didn't disturb the Australia match, India would have qualified". Lets blame the weather because other teams didn't have to battle it and deal with the recalculated scores. I will say, though, it was truly a frustrating tournament in terms of the amount of rain-affected games (due to the monsoon season). Hey atleast we have 2 asian teams in the final 4 and one of them is the host.

Posted by I_Love_My_India on (October 2, 2012, 21:41 GMT)

I am not sure any team which qualified for the semi finals deserve it. I see West Indies and Pak choked against mediocre spin attacks, Australia did that against Pak (I agree they had better spinners). To me, Australia might win given if Watson fires. Like SL, the Aus relies much on their top order. I do not see a chance with Pak unless any miracle happens.

There is no point in talking about Ifs and Buts I know. But, I guess India's loss is primarily due to the batsmen taking too many balls to score and "Nohit" Sharma is one of them. Also, the strike bowler Aswin's introduction was made late. But I still believe India was of the better teams among the contestants. If India had atleast one good fast bowler (forget about ZK and IP who strikes some times and don't talk about LB). I guess Dinda should have been chosen before LB.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 21:41 GMT)

Disappointed to see India knocked out but they only had themselves to blame, it was a poor decision by MS to bat first against Australia when he it was predicted earlier that it would rain, regardless of how the pitch behaves the team batting second always has an advantage when it rains due to the D/L method being brought into play. Also in general more matches have been won chasing in this tournament. Persisting with "No hit" Sharma rather than bringing in Manoj Tiwary and not picking Umesh Yadav in the squad were probably India's biggest blunders in this tournament. Having said that we won 4 of 5 matches and only barely lost out on NRR despite being placed in a very tough group. Compared to how teams like England and SA, who are ranked way above us have done we did really well, just goes to show how flawed and meaningless the ranking system really is and how overrated those teams are, both of those teams have been notoriously poor in major events like these on a consistent basis.

I love how pakistani Fans are dissing India, but hey maybe its your year. You played well against Australia.. overall we played better than you. But you guys are thru, but my money is on SL even though u guys played more games on thsi ground. But I did not enjoy the group stages of the WCt20.. boring groups were pre set. So honestly they should split the teams into 2 groups of 12 top 2 from each play semi finals.. that will add a lot more meaning. SO look at it this way, take the current rankings: Group 1: Group 2: Sri lanka India England Pakistan S. Africa Australia N. Zealand West Indies Bangladesh Ireland Afgan Zim.

Top 2 from each group in semi finals.. This would cause mayhem, each team will put their best and would make it a fun tournament unlike the 1st half were the group stages had no point, each match would have a great value! This Wt20 has 27 games.. My proposed way has 29 games.

IMHO, crux of the matter is the difference between Hafeez & Dhoni's captaincy approach ! While Hafeez was aggressive, Dhoni was defensive and just waited for some divine help. Hafeez set the "cat among the pigeons" ! Hafeez's strategy, immaculate planning & executaion to pulverize the invincible looking Aussie top-order and strangulation of middle order culminated in comprehensive (rather huge) 32 runs win. Which in turn magnified/multiplied Dhoni's task much more harder against top draw S.A. side. Dhoni also squandered the (unfair) advantage of knowing the exact numbers/perms against a psychologically dented ( S.A. aware of being knocked out of semis and less ferocious/mellowed side ) team. After watching what transpired in PAK vs AUS game, Indian think tanks committed the cardinal sin by keeping Harbhajan & Chawla on the bench ! Surely, Indian cricket is full of extremely talented players and the fans deserved better !

Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (October 2, 2012, 21:38 GMT)

@Tru3_kiLL3r: Well history repeats. I am normally not like one of those fans who bad mouth the opposition at the opportune time. I am not sure whether you are a Pakistani or SL supporter. But, I can assure you that the Indian fans will be back with a bang should one of those teams or BOTH of those teams exit the tournament following the semis. It would be even fun to read some of the comments from the Indian fans. So be prepared for that my friend. I am sure I WILL.

I think Pakistan have the best depth in the batting as are favourites to lift the cup if the batting click just enough as it did against Australia today. The 3 other teams who have reached the semis have a maximum of 3 good batsmen each. The combination of Raza Hasan and Saeed Ajmal is a really deadly one and they can help Pakistan beat any of the remaining sides.

Dear Indian fans... u r now out of the tournament... accept it... don't bring lame excuses like ur helpless Captain... don't blame to the weather. almost all the teams suffered from that. As well, don't blame the way they grouped the teams for Super8 roun. Not only u, but we also still amused about that. But, fixtures were not fallen from sky, all of a sudden. It was known to all the teams well ahead of the tournament. U should have objected at that time. Don't cry now.

So, finally its over. The whole world needed run rate to defeat us. They never had the guts to defeat us 'aamne samne'. We won 4 out of 5 matches!!! We made England and Pakistan look like chicken. We gifted England their lowest T20 score ever. We made sure that our record againstPakistan in a world cup was intact. We proved again that SA is the ultimate choker. We played like a champion. We played till the last ball. We rocked. Bleed Blue! CHAK DE INDIA ♥

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 21:29 GMT)

My Indian brothers, your team is out. There was nothing much wrong with the format of this tournament. You played good cricket and would probably have reached semis if your team was in a little bit better form. Australia and Pakistan played better cricket overall.

Posted by Alexk400 on (October 2, 2012, 21:26 GMT)

Lets list mistakes. 1. Dropping sehwag and let aussie scores faster rate by bad bowling. 2. Slow run rate against pakistan when you know it is easy to score. 3. By keeping rohit sharma who wants average more than strike rate. 4. When you know SA weakness is spin , picking balaji over bhaji is a blunder. I think if i am BCCI to time to say good bye to duncan fletcher and good bye to dhoni in T20 along with sehwag ( old fielder. he jumped and hurt his ankle. Unbelievable) and gambhir. Time to put raina as captain of t20 and kohli vice captain. Even Raina as captain in ODI. This will allow kohli to grow in for few years. Do not give kohli captaincy , let him score few centuries more. if you give him now , captaincy load will destroy his batting. In india we praise and dump as fast. 8-0 test loss and now world cup loss , duncan fletcher has to go. Dhoni should be dumped from test and t20. Enough is enough

Posted by v_giri on (October 2, 2012, 21:24 GMT)

3 teams with same number of points - Group of death justifies its name. On the form side it would be SL vs. AUS. Sadly Pak vs. SL deserves to be the final. We would have preferred Ind - Pak final but Hussey's celebration on reaching Semis showed how rattled Aussies were. Only consolation for India is they played reasonably well and now they are Number 2 in ICC rankings

Posted by Nampally on (October 2, 2012, 21:22 GMT)

@Naresh 28: I agree with your suggestions for wholesale changes to the Indian team in all 3 formats including Captaincy.India has relied on the old guard for much too long in all 3 formats. The recent India A,India B & Rest of India, Bengal & Rajasthan series showed there is so much existing but neglected talent in the Indian bowling & batting. You name Vijay, Dhawan, Mukund,Chand for the openers. Yes these guys have scored prolifically. But the real scoring machine was C.Pujara who magically got 3 centuries & other scores >70. This not only talent but making the talent talk via scores. I hope those who credit Rohit with talent watch Pujara's scores. In Pujara I feel India also has a skipper for the Test matches. In bowling there was one SS Das from Bengal who looked good & needs to be kept in mind. Aparajith, Harmeet, Sandeep Sharma, Awana are other youngsters need to be watched. Saha as a wk/batsman is future replacement for Dhoni. We just need impartial & intellegent Selectors Now!

Tough luck for India, but the Aussie game really was the killer. Will be interesting to seeing Aus vs WI (Watson vs Gayle) whoever fire wins. Sri Lanka vs Pakistan will be very fun, pakistan hold the edge since they have played 3 games on this ground.. Now on India.. Some selection blunders for the tournament.. Ajinka Rahane? where was he, openers were in horrible horrible form, are we in the 90's agaiin.. Kohli has to bat and india win, if he doesnt game over. Enough with Rohit Sharma and Dinda. I am so tired of seeing Dinda getting hammered in all international games, hes not meant for international cricket. Where was Umesh Yadav? or for that matter Ishant Sharma?I really think the India selectors need to look at some changes.. Ajinka Rahane needs to come & Dhoni has did well in this wt20 but needs to quit t20s . My t20 playing 11.. 1. Rahane 2. Mandeep Singh 3. Virat 4. Yuvi 5. Tiwari 6. Raina 7. Dhoni/ Uttappa? 8. Irfan 9. Ashwin 10. Balaji 11. Ishant or Yadav 12. Aaron

According to to self-styled commentator Sanjay Manjrekar; SL is not a team known to be a great T20 team, but ICC ranked SL before start of the tournament at #3, and now in #1, So ICC has done a blunder??. SL has made the highest T20 innings total (260 vs Kenya) and best bowlling is from Ajantha Mendis (6-8) and 3 batsmen have scored over 1000 runs and most number of boundries (4s) has been hit by Mahela.SL qualifying for semi final has been a surprise to him and just says that SL is playing in home to indicate they can't play outside the home, but in 2009 SL came to final in England. Importantly he emphasises that T20 championship is too much of lottery to whoever wins it,so he has downgraded World T20 Cup to a Lottery win, understandably it may well be since India cant win it now. I wonder whether he held this 'lottery' view in 2007 when India won the Lottery??? Finaly he does not think SL should win the cup instead all other 3 teams... Pak, Aus & WI are given as favourites...cont

Commiserations to India and SA. Congrats to Pak and Austrailia. It was such an exciting day with so many twists and turns. I do however think the teams playing first are at a disadvantage. India had the benefit of knowing what they had to do, but they just weren't able to execute. That is the only downside of this approach, apart from that its great way to deal with this complex situation.

It was fairly ridiculous of Dhoni to blame the exit repeatedly on a 2 minute shower between innings. Come on Mr Captain. Be a pro. Your tactics today were a little bit lacking in not bringing on Ahswin earlier I thought. You are a good captain, so lets not play the excuse game when things turn against you. Well done Pakistan and good luck.

dhoni has lost us 3 consecutive T20 world cups as a captain. i.e. 2009, 2010 and 2012. we won T20 world cup in 2007 by fluke because at that time no body was knowing how to play T20 cricket. dhoni's T20 strike rate is also 110. To win a T20 we need guys with strike rate of 150 at least, especially as dhoni bats at 7. also the openers gambhir and sehwag should be sacked along with zaheer khan. these 4 senior pros have failed in last 3 T20 world cups. we should now focus on 2014 T20 world cup. The first step to build a side for that is to make virat kohli the captain and sack dhoni, sehwag, gambhir and zaheer. replace them with rahane, pujara, umesh yadav and naman oza / saha.

Why isn't Pragyan Ojha in the Indian t20 team with an economy rate of 6.28 which is better than Ashwin. India could really do with a quality left arm spinner.

i just couldnt understand dhoni's tactics today... it seemed as though he didnt care about the figure 121 at all... all he wanted to do was win the game, and go home and say that we won every match, except for the 'rain' against australia... even when ashwin got those 2 wickets of the no-ball, india still had a chance...maybe 3-4 men around the bat could have been tried... sorry dhoni, you've just lost the last bit of respect i had for you... really selfish...

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 21:06 GMT)

to all Pakistan fans, when was the last time U beat India in an international cricket game? I guess its 2009 champions trophy. After that 3 yrs have passed. Having an unbeaten record against your arch rivals over 3 yrs is bigger than anything. 2010 Asia cup,2011 world cup semi,2012 Asia cup and now worldt20.

i dont understand why everyone is bashing on India. India won 4/5 games and all the people out there calling indian bowling pathetic. They got there opponents all out in 4/5 occasion. It was just matter of bad luck. But I hope Sri-Lanka wins the WC. The are the only team that performs well in major tournaments but still don't have trophy to prove it.

There are lot of negative comments about India especially from the Pakistani fans. But as an Indian fan, I am proud of the way the team fought foe victory with never say die attitude. I personally feel that when 2 teams are fighting for one spot with equal points, then head to head match betwn. the 2 teams should decide the winner. India totally outplayed Pakistan in head to head match yet are eliminated based on run rate- which is so odd. ICC & T20 administrator should take a note of this "flawed rule" of deciding the winner. If India had good weather when they fielded against the Aussies, it is more than likely that the 4 Indian spinners would have bundled the Aussies. The Aussies rely on just the top 3 batsmen & the way they played when Watson failed was pathetic. Also the Pakistanis were lucky to beat SA with Umar Gul's long handle.I felt India Vs. SA match was the best one of this WC. India fought hard to win & they did their fans proud! Bravo Team India- You are the Real Winners!

Indian selectors need to make wholesome CHANGES to Indian team in all formats. We need to get rid of GAMBHIR/SHEWAG as openers. We need new YOUNG BOWLERS and batsman are there to replace some of the OLDER players. These two areas of our game is making team India lose. The whole tournament and ZAKS takes wickets in our last game???? Also I was one who believed that ROHIT was our star player but he has failed - the experiment should stop there. We have players like VIJAY, DHAWAN,RAHANE, MUKUND, CHAND - PUJARA needs to be brought into other formats as well. Good Luck and best wishes to the teams who make the final. May the best team win

I think Team India played the tournament absolutely well. The problem is that there is just no margin for any error in this format of the Worldcup.

India lost one match to Australia in a very lop sided way. India Won against a tiny Pakistani total in 17 overs! We all thought India would know that they can finish off Pakistan in 14 overs! But they took their time. This cost them dearly.

These 2 mistakes cost India the Qualification. But its all good. Its not like India played bad or anything. Its just the format of the tournament is unforgiving. I mean Pakistan were almost out of contention just because they lost One match.

Now Pakistan will meet Sri Lanka in the Semi Finals. From here on its anybody's game. :) Good luck to Pakistan and to Sri Lanka. Great competition.

And lay of MS Dhoni. He is a brilliant captain that India has. All India needs is good bowlers. Thats it.

Thank you South Africa.... Truly one hell of a professional effort by Pakistan. For India, I would say, their stupid pride makes them down always. Do not forget the recent Asia Cup in which India were knocked and Pak became Asian Champion.

Pakistan played a superb cricket defeated an beaten team in the tournament and its not a fluke as Pakistan had won the T20 series against Aus in UAE. So, it's been thorough consistent performance for Pakistan.

Feel sorry for India..Hats off to South Africa for a wonderful fight!!

Sincere commiserations to MS 'No Excuses' Dhoni & Glorious Team India, who would undoubtedly have won the tournament but for a devious 25-second rain shower clearly engineered by the Australians, the ball being the wrong colour, the sun occupying a most irregular position in the sky & the opposition players cruelly refusing to bat left-handed if naturally right-handed & vice versa. We'll miss MS Dhoni's tactical genius (in particular, his steadfast insistence on playing three spinners on a seaming track & three seamers on a spinning track), Rohit Sharma's explosively quick scoring, the incendiary pace of Irfan Pathan & Balaji, & the awe-inspiring levels of fitness attained by Viru Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Ravi Ashwin & Zaheer Khan. Most of all, though, we'll miss the unfailingly witty, sportsmanlike, fair-minded, gracious & literate contributions of India's highly sophisticated fan base.

Kohli is one exceptional player... Dhoni is nice too... But he disappointed Indians big time with his Captaincy today... He should have learnt the trick from the PAK/AUS game. The moment SA captain opted to field, I sensed India won't make to SF. Btw, Pakistan bowled exceptionally well today... The only team capable of surprising every one in both the innings of a match :) Hats of to Hussey too... Man of crisis truly...

It hurts when we lose but it hurts even more when we are eliminated inspite winning. Indian fans dont be dejected: We came to this Worldcup with absolutely club level bowling, but our bowling as improved and i'm sure it will only improve from here. Make your facts clear guys, India is the only team in this world cup which had taken all the 10 wickets four times, no other team i near to this feat. SO in the end its the India's batting which let them down .. Specially against the Aussies.. Anyways I am certain that WI gonna win this time.... pretty sure about it.

Indian supporters should not forget that today Pakistan has beaten the hitherto unbeaten and most rampant side of the tournament and this was not a "just one run" defeat. Nit to forget their defeat from the same team a few days ago. There was a time in the 80s and 90s when India used to loose against Pakistan as if there was a mental block with them. Similarly the jinx now gies on for the current Pakistani team that they don't win against India in the big tiurnaments. Doesn't matter. Pakistan reached semis not by fluke but by a solid victory against a very strong team.

Posted by getsetgopk on (October 2, 2012, 20:33 GMT)

hahaha... aint that a luxury to watch South Africa do it for us Pakistanis while we sit back and just watch the dreams of over a billion people turned to dust LOL Well played SA, But seriously, that luxury was earned not gifted by someone, Pakistan was clearly the better team, the same team that smoked India got smoked back by Pakistan, and that match against India that we lost was Pakistan's to loose not because India had some mysterious ability that our players couldn't match, ability wise Pakistan is way better than India with good enough batsmen and bowlers that are second best to none. Still a big step forward for IND, winning a super 8 match after 3 consective world cups, hopefully u'll make SF after another 3 Wcups LOL Now get on with it, airport is that way.

Posted by hasanjawaid on (October 2, 2012, 20:32 GMT)

Please, let's grow up. Fact to the matter is Pakistan outplayed Australia and SouthAfrica, the chokers of big event, played to their potential and let's face it - India didn't play to its potential the way it should have. It screwed up big time with poor strategy. All those who respect and like Dhoni, like myself, were probably disappointed with his strategy of using pace. If Zaheer Khan and Balaji matched pace with their counter parts, even then it would not have been a smart move. Pace doesn't bother South Africans and Australians but spin does and Dhoni just ignored it the same way Pakistan stupefied every one by playing irresponsibly and without a strategy. However, realizing his stupidity, Hafeez restrategized in the next game and which paid off. Not only he brought Razzaq back he also started with spinners and it paid off. Anyway, everyone makes a mistake but it was indeed a costly one.

Sachin - VVS fan : Dont really care if we win or loose. Our min standard was to reach the semis and we have done it without depending on other teams like India always have in WC events, for the most part !

Forget about bi-lateral series, that I agree that the Indiians have had the upper hand recently. in every WC, Sri Lanka has done heaps better than your over rated team.

Remember the 2007 WC, where you couldnt even get out of the league stages. Pls we are talking about WC events. Get your facts straight! India deserved to loose and not make it to the Semis as they played poorly. Period!

If you wanna talk about a 7-over Gully cricket match which we had with the South Africans, Im not even gonna get into that conversation with you as it just shows that you are digging for excuses in every grave and dont have the capacity to handle a proper argument and to stomach the actual results!

END OF THE DAY, RESULTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES ! YOU ARE OUT, BYE BYE....WE ARE IN, HELLO

They work to be NO 1 always. Comparing with India does not help. FEW Pakistani fans could not take the defeat against India. But if they win the WC will the defeat against India matter? What is more important in winning the finals and that is the true mark of a consistent team.

I know a lot of SL fans will be jumping up and down coz India is out and why not, they know they can't get past Ind in semis. As an Indian fan, I am proud of our boys. 4 wins in 5 matches is good. They are on par with AUS and PAK. Tough luck with the rain, due to which spinners couldnt control in that match against AUS. I am not saying we lost because of rain, but the margin wouldn't have been this bad. And who knows, with more control, maybe they would have dismissed Watson cheap.

Anyway, I think Dhoni also has to share the blame for poor team selection. Rahana should have been tried instead of woefully out of form Sehwag and Tiwari in place of Sharma. Throughout the series we were missing firepower in the batting. In T20 you need someone like Gayle, Watto who can take the game away.

Next Time India should host T20 @ home, and get DRS system...so they can get away with LBWs and win it..ha

@AnoMaLy->Iin every game there comes a point which becomes a deciding factor.Dont make it an excuse. People are not saying that other Semi finalist teams are good, instead they are trying hard to explain how good India was and how well they performed.Yes India performed well i agree. But just dont talk as if India was the best deserving team to qualify for the Semi finals. And btwas far as NRR is concerned..The difference between Pak and Indian NRR is huge. The way we slaughtered the Aussies,Indian team's chances of returning into the Torney went ZERO. Awesome Cricket is waiting for us ahead in the Semis..Don't get disheartened.Enjoy the cricket

I am a pakistani but i dont want to blame India like others r doing. If i am honest then India have deserved it more than us. Cause they played really better cricket then Pakistan and South Africa. But they had badluck and lost against Australia. Nevertheless I am very happy that my team is in the semifinals against our srilankan brothers... But I have to agree with Ali Jan that respect is very important in such games where u r representing your whole country. Best of luck to Pakistan and Sri Lanka (its too bad that just one of them can qualify for the finals)

well played india and congrats to PAK team..lot of my indian bros bashed Pak team couple of days ago when they lost to their neighbors,,some commenting "PAk is the most inconsistent team ,bla bla"...well how Can the PAk team be the most inconsistent 1????? they have managed to get into the semi-finals of all of the t20 WC(2007,2009,2009,2010,2012)so far, and lifting the trophy 1ce and coming-out to be the runners-up in another WC..this is so special especially, if 1 considers that they have no international ckt being played at their home for quite a few yrs and also been isolated from IPL...some said "winning against Pak team is far better than holding WC trophy etc ".Guys its da time to give-up political rivalry and start cheering the game of ckt.Lot of indians r bashing dhoni for their oust from the WC..for those ppl someone has to remind them that he was the 1who led indian ckt to glor ,wining 2 worldcups under his leadership..he's certainly 1 of the grt captains of all time..

One thing is for sure. A lot of indians including myself will be supporting PAK against SL match for all the trash SL fans are writing here. @Herath-UK what have you got to say about your own team that had lost to SA which remained as the worst in our Group? worry about your own team(who are damn lucky to be in that group) mate rather than telling everyone if india deserves it or not. @bMike yeah we know who knocked us out in Asia cup How many series has SL won last 2 years? I know you will surface only when india looses.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 20:09 GMT)

Actually, India performed much better than my expectations. I would say Pakistan played better than India on two days. India didn't lose their semifinal place outright. Their bowling was probably the weakest of the group yet they won two games. India's bowling Sachin was wicketless till the last game. Anyway he is growing old and India needs a replacement. Also, India's spin department is not that great with no consistent performance by anyone. India's selection is weird too by relying too much on Sehwag and Gambhir while Rehane is just going waste. As far as the finals: I expect Pakistan Australia final. Pakistan has this strange ability to improve as the tournament progresses and I won't be surprised if they won.

Posted by lonely_boy on (October 2, 2012, 20:07 GMT)

I still don't understand why Dhoni decided to play 3 seamers against SA. Harbhajan, even Chawla, would have been a better choice considering the fact that SA dont play spinners well. Also sad to see Yuvi continues to outshine the lead spinner by some quality bowling. We started well by placing 2 slips and attacking field. But the moment Faf started playing shots, Dhoni switched to defensive mode.No excuse for bringing Rohit before Ashwin which I think allowed SA to breathe a little after Yuvi's brilliant over. But the fact is we didn't score enough on the board when it really mattered. The famous battingline up struggled to find runs through out the whole innings. A change is needed inthis team. We are really bored watching the same script time after time. I believe its time for Dhoni to step down as a captain and enjoy the coming days as pure wk batsman - atleast in T20. We need some fresh faces in T20 squad. A team without stars, but win matches ,like the one dhoni got in 2007..

Cheer up guys it's okay, You guys kohlied us (did i just use his name as a verb? lol) and you guys won 4 out of 5 matches your bowling was that of any good bowling team but i think batting should've produced more if We can make 150 on the same track then you should've made atleast 180 but anyways there's something thing which has been bubbling inside of me, courtesy demands that i shouldn't say it but what the heck, it's a shame that IPL giants couldn't make it through to the semis and we did despite having our grounds desserted. Anyways good luck for the series in December *cheers* :)

yipee.pak is in the semis.it will be Pak vs Srilanka.now i dont care who ever wins as Srilankans are our brothers.May the best team wins. In the end i want to see pak playing with an extra seamer.may be Sami or Tanvir (i knw that both are horrible fielders) but u got to go with 2 genuine seamers (considering how good Lankans are against spinners.so 8 overs of SEAM bowling and 12 of SPIN sounds perfect...2ndly i think razak and raza shud play and pak needs to field well aswell to win the SF match.Gud Luck !

I am sure many in PAK are celebrating more the fact that India is out rather than PAK is in semis but I dont blame them. For India it was only PAK who h a t e d us (not in a bad way but interms of intense rivalry) but now most cricketing nation h a t e s us and it is party time in PAK, BNG, SL, AUS, ENG in that order. At least we can keep our heads held high as with a ordinary bowling unit we still managed to beat all the teams ranked above us. Yes we desparetly need bowling talents and I hope BCCI realizes that sooner than later.

@ ProdigyA. The qualification rules are correct, they should be based on run rate if points are tied. So you say India should have qualified since they beat Pak. Sure, it's a disappointment to miss out on the semis but that loss against AUS was the real culprit. Anyway.. it's time for test cricket against England. Good luck in that series. Some really stupid comments from Sri Lankans and Pakistanis here which defies logic. I think they keep forgetting that many Indians support their fellow Asian teams to do well in such tournaments. That's the MAJOR difference between Indians and the other nationalities. I am darn proud of the Men In Blue. Commiserations to the Proteas, you are still the BEST test team for a long time to come.

The "choker" tag will be synonymous with SA cricket for years to come....

I don't think there's much to be disappointed about. It's a game, you win some, you lose some. It's great to see them winning 4 out of 5 and at least going out there with intent. Our bowling attack isn't the best out there and I didn't expect them to bowl SA out before 121 but I can't say they let me down. Well done, India! Pakistan have been pretty decent, too, apart from the loss against India and the way they stumbled against SA. Australia, too, deserved to go through. Well played all!

India quite good being overwhelming star team bt nt in guile and tactfulness. it seems INDIA got defeated by 3 cheeky teams and nt by 1 team. All 3 team must now be laughing at their IPL gimmicks haaaa haaa ha.

Agrees with unfair pooling of Grp 1 n 2. All teams shld play wit every team and take top 4 into semis. Assoc. teams should play with all bottom 4 world ranked teams in 1st rounds. Top 4 world ranks should never play assoc. teams again. In my opinon its cheaper, quick and reasonable.

If SL was in Grp 2 nd nt SA, we would share the same fate too. Gonna b tough 2 win against PAK mentally. India v need ure cheers on Thurs.

Young Kohli is a superstar and he is willing to take challenges head on, just look at his batting. Good luck to all Semi finalists.

With the talent they have, they must be winning more tournaments. But they are inconsistent on the field and and sometimes in batting as well.

Posted by ProdigyA on (October 2, 2012, 19:35 GMT)

ICC should get its act together by having similar rules across all tournaments which is very frustrating for the spectators. In Asia Cup, India could not make it to the Finals cause they lost to BD irrespective of the run-rate and now even it couldnt make it thru cause of the run-rate even though it defeated Pak earlier, what nonsense rules for each tournament. Add to that, all the best Teams in one group and minnows in another group.

First off congratulations to the 4 remaining teams as they truly deserved to be in the final 4. @Usman Sharif thank you for your fair assessment and I completely agree with you as to why the team did not finish scoring agnst PAK in 16.4 overs as the commentators were saying. Atleast India won 4 of the 5 games beating AFG, ENG, PAK and SA but were man handled by Aussies and that cost them the final 4 berth . I still pick PAK to win it all as they have worlds best spin attack and are the only team who can beat Aussies. Good luck to all 4 teams and I hope either PAK or WI wins it.

Posted by Shouldas-Wouldas-Couldas on (October 2, 2012, 19:29 GMT)

Dhoni's defensive approach cost India semi spot. At least, Dhonishould have tried to make things happen, try gets wickets. To start with, Dhoni should have tried to contain/bowl the Proteas under 110. Pathetic captaincy/approach ! Shoudve have taken the cue from Pak spinners strangulation the Australians & included Bhajji !

Posted by FM97 on (October 2, 2012, 19:28 GMT)

India may have been eliminated from World T20 but there are some positives from this tournament for them : 1) The bowling has surpassed expectations, India havee bowled out every team (except the ruthless Aussies). 2)Middle order barring Yuvraj has been good . Now the reason why India failed to qualify for semis was because of Dhoni's funny captaincy against Oz, Confused XI selection and even more strange 15-man squad and lastly and most importantly TERRIBLE opening starts with Viru-Gauti duo woefully outta form. On the darker side, I suspect Australia also played too many balls against Pakistan in the final game where they could have actually lost by 20 runs. (Mike Hussey , why did you play slowly against Pakistan in this match when you could destroy their bowlers like you did in the 2010 t20 semifinals !!)

good stuff. Though as a Pakistani I must say, Virat Kohli is a batting god. He has no nerves and times almost everything to perfection. There's no weakness to work on, he's so confident and so much talent at the same time.

In sharp contrast you have Umar Akmal and Rohit SHarma who are maybe just as talented but no where near as mentally tough. Kohli is the next tendulkar for sure.

Pak won in style while India did win but not in style and that is why Pak is in semis. Its a game and shud b taken s a game. Like Australia, India at present is one man army. Kholi goes and its almost over. Had those 2 catches been taken by SA, India wud have posted much lower total. Kholi no doubt is a class apart but he needs support staff. Unfortunately theer was none. Indian bowling was also mediocre. After having seen Pak spinners tightening the screws of Aussies, Dhoni shud have got H. Singh in. Besides why did he got his prime bowler Ashwin after the 10th over. there was no point winning the match if u cant qual for semis.Dhoni shud have gone for the kill , rt from the word go. Pak gave only 2 overs to the seamers. I guess Dhoni got it wrong and for which v r thankful to him. Otherwise he is a great captain and i have all the respect for him. Thankfully it was not his day. .Best of luck to Pakistan team. i think they r the hot favorites and will lift the cup.. Insha Allah

Group 1 has an average per inning score of 154 (@Pallekale) against Group 2's 104 (@ Colombo). Is it fair to have the two groups play at venues that provide completely different scores? It seems to me that either the pitches should have been scrambled or the group 1 and group 2 games should have alternated between these two venues. The 50-run difference between venues is too big to ignore.

SirViv, watching India struggle to get past Afghanistan all but the most one-eyed supporter would have sensed that this team was lacking magic. However, despite a very mediocre T20 record overall, India did win 4 matches out of 5 but, when they were bad, they were awful and it killed them in the end. The surprise was that, despite very iffy bowling and a batting line-up that never really clicked, they registered excellent wins over England, South Africa and Pakistan.

leave aside who's through to SF who's not. What on earth did SA do. Such a poor performance from them, at least I was not expecting. not just in this match, in all three super 8 matches.

In all fairness, India played very well in the tournament and expecting them to restrict SA for 121 or less is asking too much. To me, they lost the chance to play in the semi-finals when they scored the final 3 off 6 balls against Pakistan (the 17th over). Had they finished off that game sooner, which was possible, they'd have had more cushion in today's game.

Why did Harbhajan not play instead of Balaji? Especially after looking at how Pakistan bowled.

Posted by shahbazhussain on (October 2, 2012, 18:59 GMT)

So the man in blues have got enough time to warm-up and get more training for CLT20 coming ahead? May be that tournament worth more than the WT20 as it is less lucrative? anyway the indian fans should think positively and should take this they can only beat pakistan because we are their brothers and do not want them to loose hopes and we encourage them to keep enjoying. No problem if they win-loose but yet the cricket survived. Survived in a sense the less T20 exposed team is coming on top... India won against Pak just because they controlled their nerves but they did not have enough guts to play a professional cricket. Withotu Virat - you cant beat Pakistan. Because Virat is the only guy who controls the nerve better than any cricketer ever had the bat in hand. The most prominent name after hims is the cricketing super power batsman Don Bradman. None is like him but Kohli. He is also not even like the Don but the Don of todays cricket. I love Virat's game.He is champ. Hats off for him

Do we have any more excuses???? Rohit Sharma you played an extraordinary knock....Hats off to you !!! Dhoni n Fletcher....Guys you both can seriously pick a great team....playing three pacers on a spinning track against South Africa...has to be one of the best decision made in recent years.....Well Played

Posted by pulkit10 on (October 2, 2012, 18:57 GMT)

Knocked out by NRR - oh well. At least they played well and gave it a good shot, missed out towards the end by it ran up close. Good luck to Shane Watson, err... Australia and Pakistan.

And Yuvraj has clearly made a great comeback - he has been performing consistently ever since he came back making all the calls for resting him by former India 'greats' rather silly. Good going man.

Message for indian fans from pakistan. Dont be upset please, your team played good in the tournament losing only one match. It was only the super 8s lol. Can you imagine what we felt after losing the 07 final and the 2011 semifinal and again here in srilanka we got kohli'd again lol. So hardluck and pray australia doesnt win the cup. As far as the matches are concerned Australia ended up at 117. Only 5 runs more than 112 the required qualification target. Su hussey and co playing a slow innings is justified especially after watson got out. One special mention goes out for raza hasan , amazing opening bowling against two absolute killer batsmen, what a genuine talent once again produced by Pakistan. Well dhoni shouldve tried to surprise safrica, shouldve used spinners but why pick orfan and zaheer if they wont be given the new ball, both need swing to be effective. I guess balaji is the fail pick and dhoni should trust his spinners more, they are not as bad as he thinks lol

Posted by yohandf1984 on (October 2, 2012, 18:55 GMT)

Well . India is unlucky to say the least . Generally in 4 team group , 2 gets 2 win each and get qualify while other 2 eliminate with 1 each . or else 3-2-1-0 . But india goes out with 2 wins . So they hv only themselves to blame by loosing badly to AUS and winning lazilily vs PAK . realitiy check for some sectors of their fans though , who were over the moon and think they are superior in every aspect of game . time to be humble .

Posted by jamfai on (October 2, 2012, 18:55 GMT)

I am so tired of Dhonis comments at post match interviews. India have failed to reach the semis and he has NOT failed to come up with excuses. Its the rain against Aussies (as if the rain hasnt helped him in the past). Purely Indian bowling is sub par especially the death bowling. He should stop making excuses and be a MAN that his team has failed to reach the last few worldcups because of inconsistent batting and horrid bowling

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:54 GMT)

India had great depth in batting but South Africa was also good.. The four best teams are in the semi-finals now. I think odds on favorites are Australia with their powerhouse batting and pace bowling. I hope Dhoni and the Indian team will not face the irrational hysterical mobs the way they had to when Sri Lanka knocked them out in 2007 in Trinidad..I was at that game..Well done Pakistan.

Posted by Rish_India on (October 2, 2012, 18:53 GMT)

Good Luck Pakistan and West Indies for the rest of the tournament. Hoping one of these two teams takes the cup this year! They have both had to go through tough times in the past! India, too bad you couldn't make it to the semi finals. I still love you, and will always support you. Dhoni, you are an amazing captain, it was because of your knock that we reached respectable scores against Afghanistan and South Africa. Like in politics, if you are not a politician, you can always speak like one, its the same with cricket. People who have no cricketing knowledge or experience will always speak like on on these forums! You keep leading the team and hoping to see more wins for India, and more runs from you, and also hoping that the selectors dont take any rash step! Cheers India!

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:52 GMT)

Plssssss dont blame rohit sharma for the loss !! he s d higest run scorer for india after kohli and gambhir !! typing tis with tear in my eyes !! by a true rohit fan !! this loss is all about poor captaincy and poor selection !! in the leque match against england dhoni said he s gonna take this as a warm up match and played irfan as an opener with 5 special bowlers in 11 !! and he took the same playin 11 for the match against australia with irfan openin thats the only reason i see india is out of the tournament !! did he take the match against australa also as a warm up game !!? wonder what gud thing dhoni did in this whole tour !!

Posted by lense on (October 2, 2012, 18:51 GMT)

itsthewayuplay - did you watch the same match? Rohit? really?? I thought no Indian fan could ever support Rohit after this selfish batting display. India needed to win big and its ok if one cant score of a full toss but its NOT OK if one cant try to score of a full toss. To all those who bash shewag and raina they might not have always played a responsible knock but i never seen them play a selfish knock like rohit did today.

Posted by awjaleel on (October 2, 2012, 18:50 GMT)

Again bad tactics from Dhoni. Indian made Ashiwin bowl very late. where in 17the same pitch pakistan made Umar Gul bowl on the 17th over. High time India has seperate team for all the three formats. All the people crying for removing Dhoni has to think what Shewag and Gambhir did till now. I agree we have Virat but he is too young.

Posted by NaveedKh on (October 2, 2012, 18:49 GMT)

Pakistani batsmen could not handle pressure playing against India otherwise they would have been able to expose indian ordinary bowling attack. I know India has got few very best bastman but we should have restricted them if our batsman were able to score something against pathetic bowling. They were flat even against yuvraj and kohli. Its really a joke. That was only because of pressure of a Big Match.

Posted by Lokesh_indian_fan on (October 2, 2012, 18:47 GMT)

It is disappointing that India is out of the tournament.Having said that it is not always we can get world cup every time we go out there. There are quite few good teams competing and better teams move forward and finally win cup. It is disappointing to see the attitude of MSD. Looks like success as gone into his mind. Why the hell on the earth someone can blame rain for their below par performance. Even small kid knows how strong is our bowling unit. Even club level batsmen can hit sixes for those half tracker balls . Hopefully it is the time our beloved MSD takes retirement from T20 cricket and allow the aggressive Kohli to take over and win cup at least next time in Bangladesh. Guys it is pleasure watching you. we loved your performance in the tournament. Of course except MSD (He was good captain now good politician).

Congratulations Aus, Pak, SL, WI. You guys played better cricket and deserved to be semis. Hope WI will win this world cup and make their fans happy :)

Posted by Homer2007 on (October 2, 2012, 18:47 GMT)

4 wins out of 5. 10 wickets in a T20 game, 4 times out of 5.

Beat the #1 team, the #2 team ( and current holders), our neighbors to the west, and the Cinderella team of the tournament. And to top it off, won 2 Super 8 games, their first after the IPL!

Not too shabby for a team with flaky batting, popgun bowling, 7 guys above 30 and slow movers on the field, and a captain who pretty much cant do squat.

Will take it, every day of the week!!

Posted by jb633 on (October 2, 2012, 18:45 GMT)

Considering the talent at their disposal that was such a poor campaign for SA. They obviously lose their bottle in the crunch moments which is just no acceptable for such a decent side

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:44 GMT)

indians dont have any world class bowler or spinner. They only reply on other teams, so they can qualify.

indian haven't made to semi final since 2007 wc.

IPL is the manin reason why india is not good in T20

Posted by Rajesh_india_1990 on (October 2, 2012, 18:43 GMT)

Lol..all the srilankans are jumping now because they are scared to face India..INDIA won 4 out of 5 matches same as Aus,pak,sl(one in super over)..WI won 3 out of 5 matches(one in super over) and still in semifinals..what a tragedy...

Posted by MyFineLeg on (October 2, 2012, 18:43 GMT)

Here is the SL team for the Pakistan semi final : Dilshan, Mahela, Sanga, angelo, Jeevan, Thirimanne, Thisara, Kulasekera, herath, malinga & Dhananjaya.

Ajantha mendis's will be dropped due to his poor form, and since Paks are commforable against him. Paks have shown a weakness against left arm leg spin - especially Herath. Paks haven't seen Dhananjaya yet, so good to play him. Good for SL to bat first if possible. Difficult to chase against the quality Pak bowling, and Pak are relatively bad chasers.

Posted by NaveedKh on (October 2, 2012, 18:40 GMT)

My advice to BCCI: They should have announced a decent IPL contract to Plessis before todays match coz BCCI could not keep him quite like his senior players obliged india with whole heart. Anyway thanks alot SA. From a Pakistani fan.

So happy with the result. Loved the disappointing looks on arrogant Yuvraj and Kohli. One question from the Indian fans though. Do you guys really buy Dhoni's excuse of rain factor for the loss to Aussies rather than giving credit to the Aussies who were the better team on the day?

Posted by recycle-bin-is-empty on (October 2, 2012, 18:39 GMT)

There is absolutely no shame in the way our team went out of the this tournament. Team India- you did make us fans very proud with your effort and we want to thank you for that. Also well played South Africa.

Posted by DaBigDawg on (October 2, 2012, 18:35 GMT)

When Dhoni started...he played to win...he was aggressive and focused...that's why people liked him. Now, sadly...he plays to "not lose". That never works...because eventually that is almost never enough. It's a very troubling trend...go back and review India's last few series...you'll see what I mean.

Posted by rob_damn on (October 2, 2012, 18:35 GMT)

The funny thing is India is second in ICC t20 ranking.... and I think pak (currently 3rd) might become 1st after winning next match... anyways, i know ranking system(in T20) is just a joke...

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:35 GMT)

Well played Sri Lanka, Pakistan, West Indies and Australia. What happened to the ICC big power house India? They can only play T20 IPL on their home soil. Kholi is suited for ODI and Test matches It is still a mystery for Sri Lankans how India won the 2011 world cup against Sri Lanka in the finals All the best for Sri Lanka team in the semi finals

Posted by Solid_Snake on (October 2, 2012, 18:34 GMT)

Dhoni still blaming the 'RAIN' for India's knockout.. This is the last thing i would want to hear Lol Best of Luck India for the next WC,now its time to pack your Bags :P

Posted by SnowSnake on (October 2, 2012, 18:33 GMT)

Fair result overall. The kind of win Pakistan had over Australia makes Pakistan more deserving than India's one run win. However, any one who watch India must come to conclusion that India's batting is a problem. If India won games then it was due to its bowling and not batting. Also, SA bowling is not that great. They have been playing on pitches that support fast bowling for last two years. On sub-continent pitches SA fast bowlers are as average as Indian fast bowlers.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:33 GMT)

Its's funny how people were complaining how pathetic indian bowling is and they bowled out 4 teams in five games..!!!!

Posted by MyFineLeg on (October 2, 2012, 18:32 GMT)

I feel IPL is a more interesting tournament than the T20 World Cup. Do you know why ? Even with bad net run rates, you still get the opportunity to see Indians players playing till the final.

Posted by sachin_vvsfan on (October 2, 2012, 18:32 GMT)

Wonder what could have happened had SA played duplessis in the super 8 games. He was the only batsman scoring comfortably today. SA dig its own grave. Their players selection is mess.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:31 GMT)

Sad, and generic as this comment might be - as an Indian, I simply admired and appreciated how well Pakistan played against Australia. They are the first team to halt the Watson juggernaut, and as always displayed the 'cornered tiger' spirit. Yet, sadly - a lot of my friends from Pakistan seem solely to revel in putting down India (and praying for their loss, really guys?) just as a lot of Indians had their fill couple of days ago. Wish sometimes, just sometimes people could enjoy the game for the love of it, and not the weight of their fanatical support.

Posted by Amsyrocker on (October 2, 2012, 18:31 GMT)

Well yeah ! Indian won 4 out of 5 games, so did Pak and Aus.. In the event like this every match should matter, Ind didn't get anything after thrashing Eng by 90 runs, where as they should have carried forward the points... Shouldn't it be the rain against Aus, Ind would have lost say in 18th over and by 5-6 wickets and would have qualified today.. One best e.g. is 1999 world cup, where Pak carried their group stage points to super6, although they got beaten by Ind, S.A. and Bangala, they were to the Semis. But one thing is sure, be it Pak or Sril Lanka, they are relieved looking at India's dominance over them in the last 5 years..

Sehwag should be the captain for Indian T20 team

Posted by shailkhare on (October 2, 2012, 18:29 GMT)

I had this sick feeling that we would be out on run rate while watching India Australia match when Dhoni was just not concerned about run rate business and in place of delaying victory by Australis by using frontline bowlers he used part timers like Rohit and ensured an early win for Australia ans a pathetic negative run rate for India.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:29 GMT)

i wouldn't even call 121 was tough to chase .. when pak won by 32 runs taking the 'difference' in net runrate between india and pak to +0.725 ... i kinda had a feeling india's chances were low against not-so-trivial-to-beat side like SA ..

tough going guys ..

That was really great entertainment. I just thought that Morkel must be the biggest nut in i'ntl cricket. To be the hero, all he had to do was nudge it for a single, make the game a tie, and then let Dale deal with the last ball - We may have even seen another super over.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:26 GMT)

India problem is that they do not know who are their bowlers, their allrounders, part timers. They must now select a complete fresh bowling unit that should be taught that they are bowlers and their job is to bowl not bat. Most of indian bowlers practice bating rather than bowling. So india is nothing getting out of IPL but look at watson he shows he got something from IPL,, look at duplessi, bravo, gayle they got plenty from IPL but india got nothing they pick same team again and again.

Posted by Yoker111 on (October 2, 2012, 18:25 GMT)

Guys cut some slack for the indian team... If kohli fails India fails.. it's become like SL back in the day where if Jayasuriya fails SL fails... This is why Cricket should and always be a team sport... you need to have four aces like in any pack of cards.

CHOKERS !!!. One thing that nobody is talking about is that when Morne Morkel had 2 ball to get 2 runs to win the game, then he could have tied the game by getting just 1 run, and still dale styne would have had the opportunity of hitting the winning runs & but even if they got just 1 run in 2 bals still the match would be tied and then the specialist batsmen would have taken care in the super over. But the Chokers that they are, they did not think of it and lost the last wicket swinging.

Posted by PakCricSpin on (October 2, 2012, 18:21 GMT)

I for one thing India played really well throughout the tournament and just because of One bad game which was blamed on the rain / Watson / Warner annihilation, they had to pay the price.

I also feel India missed a trick in the book when they were beating Pakistan. They needed just 3 runs off the 16th over Against Pakistan while Saeed Ajmal was bowling. It took India the entire 16th over to make 3 runs to Win the match. By that time Pakistan had edged ahead in the run rate. Had India hurried up a little in chasing down Pakistan's little total, they would not be in the situation they are here today.

So for India there were 2 pivotal mistakes. The bad loss to Australia and the 17th over victory against Pakistan's tiny total.

Lastly Pakistan played their game against Australia just too well.

First of all congratulations to Pakistan and Australia for making it into the semis. Now a little bit of complaint about the format. Super 8 to be decided by the outcome of just 3 games per team is not sufficient. South Africa's fate was sealed based on outcome of two games. I would have hoped that the win from the first round would have been carried forward and each team would play the remaining six teams in super 8. This would have doubled the number of games in super 8s from 12 to 24 but would have given more meaningful outcome.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:18 GMT)

Posted by SachBro on (October 2, 2012, 18:17 GMT)

Why everybody is bashing India and calling them a team that depends on others to proceed in a tournament? Didn't Pak depend on SA to make 121 to push them into Semis? Cricket is game of glorious uncertainties. Don't forget, no one is undefeated here, Aus looked pathetic today, same happened to Pak in their last game against India and Sri Lanka had close escapes in their recent games. One thing is for sure now, please don't call SA world's strongest side, they are not. They may rock in bi-lateral series but in world tournaments, they are miserable.

Posted by CricketLiver on (October 2, 2012, 18:17 GMT)

T20 is an exciting format to watch as any team is capable of winning! I watched both games today and Pak played really well to wing big against Aus. Ind on the other hand, couldn't score enough. It was horrible to watch No-hit Sharma floundering away opportunities. Gambhir was useless as well. Although, I support Indian cricket, I have to say they didn't try hard enough to progress and didn't deserve to be in the final 4. I hope WI go all the way and win it. It'll be great for cricket in the Caribbean!

What a game of cricket.......Hard luck to our Indian fellows. Now it's upto semi final stage. My predictions about SL v Pak, AUS v WI proved correct. First semi final is now the match to watch out for. Both teams are good in spin department. Any team can win to take on Australia in Final. Whatever the result of first semi final, either Pak or SL should take the trophy. We Pakistanis love both Pak and Lankan team.Enjoy the cricket......GL to both Pak and SL.

Is this was the same player we have seen in last World T20 Cup who turned the match at his own in last over against Ajmal ? It is understandable that every day is not Sunday. But today we havent seen his efforts also. Its not understandable that a World class team only scores 16 runs in last 3 overs when they needs 49. So dear friends just maje comments on these Aussies. No way against Rohit. Dhoni rightly said after match....we cant do anything on other teams performamce. According to him rightly India played well to win 5 out of 6 matches. Its only Aussies who delrbrately lost match with big margin against Pak. WI even won only 2 matches out of 6. Still they manages to secure semis place. Its just a bad luck of India. Finally about Rohit. After Sri Lanka last tour he just giving his 100%. Playing well. All the best to him for forthcoming Champions league. His 57 knock against England was simply brillient. My dear friends support Rohit for his future.

Hard luck.... that big loss against Aus cost us eventually, otherwise a decent performance. Interestingly, except the game against Australia, the bowling has done better than expected but batting could have been better, something most Indian fans (at least myself) didn't think at the start of the tournament. Zaheer looked in great touch today, and I hope this is a sign of him getting back in form.

Dhoni needs to let go of his ego and start thinking about the country. All along he has been callling Yuvraj a Part Time bowler, guess what he is your most economical and successful bowler so treat him as a genuine all rounder. Rohit has been confused while he is batting with the exception of one inning in last little while so why not Rahane to open and drop Gambhir to three. Dhoni had no intention to be in the semis otherwise he would have brought Yuvi and Ashwin right up front and why try Rohit??

India have a safe flight home. Please don't comment about SL not adhering to spirit of cricket. We saw how Shewag went of the field - injured whilst celebrating !!! , and through some coincidence Tiwary who is a brilliant fielder came in.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:13 GMT)

Its is part of the game(stupid icc format rules)...and India can held their heads high. We have won 4 out 5, same as Aus, Pak, Sri...so no problem...even defeated pak which is as good as winning the cup.

Oh Indian fans..where are you ..??? your team have some serious packing to do... so why don't you help them out?

Posted by TSJ07 on (October 2, 2012, 18:11 GMT)

continued....As Indian fan I am disappointed but definitely not embarrassed as SA ENG and NZ fans should be.Also india should think of selecting new t20 team around with Yuvi,Raina,Kohli,Aswin,Ghambir,Harbhajan,Pathan,Tiwary and some new under 21 players like Unmukt and Baba. Also although it was predetermined but still all 4 teams of gp A would have qualified for semi had they been divided into 2 gps instead of WI and SL.Now that India is out I will be cheering for Pak team form here on.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:11 GMT)

Idiotic ICC rules, India out of semis even after winning 4 out of 5 matches with -0.274 NET RR while West Indies in after losing 3 out of 5 matches with -0.375 NET RR....... India is a winner, it's a world cup n each effort should be counted in groups and overall as well.........

Posted by RK.Chandru on (October 2, 2012, 18:11 GMT)

Blame it on our batting; especially, the struggling openers. It's pathetic to see them struggling time and again. Viru and Gauti on current form do not deserve a place in any format of the game. Axe them first and replace them with Rahane, Vijay and Shikar Dawan. Give them a fair trial and enough chances to prove. Do not look beyond Irfan and Ashwin for an allrounder. They have proven beyond doubt that, they're very good and capable allrounders. Groom them well by showing enough faith and preservance. Zak must perform consistently to merit his stature as the leading strike bowler for India. Have 3 separate teams for the 3 formats of the game as this will enough chances for all the deserving players and will players from burnout due to over work. Please axe the openers and replace them with fresh young faces. please....

Today and tonight are both very sad for me. India knocked-out from semi-final and that made me very very sad. The disappointing thing for me was that Australia couldn't beat Pakistan and they were just trying to qualify for the semi-final. India could easily beat South Africa if Australia had beaten Pakistan, because here was some pressure on India so that they should have beaten S Africa with big margin. Anyway my message to Indians and Indian team is that be patient and try for future. I love India Team. Samiullah Weesa from Afghanistan

BYE BYE INDIA..........Best of luck Pakistan to Play against Srilanka in Semi-Final....Pakistan Zindabad :)

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:08 GMT)

You may want to blame the draws since the windies havent been very impressive, more so than bharat atleast. Pakistan and bharat both didnt deserve to be left out of the semis.

Pakistan is a more well rounded side with a couple of in form batters and quality bowlers than bharat is and on that count, group of death has ended up in the right order.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:08 GMT)

No worry Team india ..... still well played. I will still rate Dhoni as best indian captain ..... guys like ravi shastri and sanjay manjerkar please go and watch your video during your playing days...but there are few players not deserve to be in indian team....please axe piyush chawla, rohit sharma and balaji........

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:08 GMT)

sooo lets hear it indian fans........... what are your teams excuses ?? ha ha ha haaaaa LOLS :D wonder what the indian fan pundits who always put comments regarding every other team, has to say on this :D

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:07 GMT)

What rubbish comments again on Rohit Sharma. In this World Cup he played 6 innings. He scored 37, 56, 1no, 57no, 1 and 25. Whats wrong in this. He is onky after Virat who scored half century. Today against SA he came at 30/3. What anybody can expect from him at that stage. Its easy to say it was time of powerplay. India need somebody to stay at one end. He stood there and give Yuvi and Raina free hand to score runs. It must be game plan made by themselves at that perticular time. If India keep loosing wickets from both the ends then its verydifficultto score runs above 150. Full marks to Rohit. To all my dear friends. Just make strong comments on Pak / Aussie match. Can anybody agree what Aussies played a big 3rd level game. They need at the end 49 runs in last 3 overs. Can we believe their game when a player like Hussey made efforts to score just 15 runs in last three overs ? He was just playing to secure Pakistan to the semis and for his half century. Contd......

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:07 GMT)

Good for Pakistan, Australia and SL that India is not in Semi-final. Remember, all this teams were thrashed by India in last WC. These teams will never like it to see India in Semis to avoid another thrashing.

Posted by Solid_Snake on (October 2, 2012, 18:07 GMT)

According to the Indian Fans, the weakest team of this group ie Pakistan has reached the Semifinal for the 4th time..The only team to reach Semis in all T20 WC's..If you say that we are the weakest yet we keep on winning like that,i would be more than happy to call our self as weak lol I am very happy today, the way we defeated Aussies by a huge margin of 32 Runs, excellent win for Pak..Raza Hassan what a beauty. The way he bowled. The Same Watson who was busy thrashing all the teams till now including INDIA as well. Our Raza Hassan a20 year old boy overcame that Watson

Posted by shazzar on (October 2, 2012, 18:07 GMT)

Excuses can be made of the affect of the rain, austaralia supposedly taking it easy against pakistan but at the end of the day india with its batting line just did not put enough runs on the board, to deserve to go throrugh outright. Its was simply too much for a one man show: kholi. To be honest on another day, any one from pakistan, safrica or india could have qualified as they all played out of soughts.

Posted by WC96QF on (October 2, 2012, 18:06 GMT)

Well played India !! you guys at least showed the heart, rite till the last ball, to witn the match. Winning 4 out of 5 matches - you cant ask for more than that ! no other team has done more anyways !! Bridging the gap in NRR was just a little too far. But this T20WC, even if the Indian team is out, they have by no means disgraced themselves. Definitely better than 2009 and 2010. Chin up guys, there are more battles to be fought in the days to come !!

Posted by cric_roch on (October 2, 2012, 18:05 GMT)

In last 5 years , india won T20 world cup in SA, ODI world cup india and was top ranked in test for 2 years winning test series in NZ, ENG, SL and WI.

India paid the price for playing so badly against AUS. Otherwise a decent tournament. We lost only one match our of 5...No teams have wne all matches.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 18:05 GMT)

Today's MOM award once again goes to the supremely talented Sir Nohit Sharma, for his outstanding all-round performance. A quickfire 25 in just 27 balls and bowled an extremely tight over for just 13 runs!! He single handedly ensured that India won the match...Take a bow!!

Posted by Cricket_at_best on (October 2, 2012, 18:05 GMT)

Can anyone please tell me why Australia would want to keep India out of semi finals when they thrashed them with one of worst defeats of tournament. Really strange to see odd theories in some of comments regarding this.

Posted by SoulTaker on (October 2, 2012, 18:05 GMT)

The biggest mistake which is hurting India is Dhoni's arrogance to keep Rohit sharma in the team...luk at his score he made and he gave away those runs in his single over...he made the team suffer...when is Dhoni going to realise that he is a burden for the team...and when are we going to pick young fast and spin bowlers?

Posted by CricketSoBoring on (October 2, 2012, 18:05 GMT)

Two main culprit for team India not making to semis Sehwag & Rohit. Sehwag footwork to slow due to his age and Rohit needs to play some county cricket. Same on team India.

Posted by rob_damn on (October 2, 2012, 18:04 GMT)

Dear fellow indian fans, dont dare give any excuses tonight.... We lost just because we didnt play well... I hope we all would be eating a humble pie tonight.. I know there would be few, blaming oz for defensive play (my friend allready told that to me) but admit it that our team didnt play well... we have few out of form players who needs to work very very hard... prepare for coming tests... and please stop trolling on Eng pages for a while... we are no better than them... and dont predict and series win or something.... be humble...

I ve been supporting South Africa since 96 world cup, which Srilanka won (where SA lost against WI)... there has always been diappointment since then! They never learn,, they never improve - today was my last support for them!

@SirViv1973 - I'm a dejected Indian fan, but every team including Aus, Pak played 1 BAD game..in the end India lost on NRR..so nothing disgraceful about it. 4/5 wins just like Aus, Pak but yet out..that is regretable.

Being one Pakistani cricket lover..... i am fan of Indian team too as they have few wonderful players, game is over for india they have to know what kind of mistakes have they done. we should not depend on other teams lose or win for qualifying in semis.......... they need few changes as well. best of luck last four... for me still Australia is most favorite to win this time i am enjoying good cricket who wins and who wont i dont care as in the end one has to win and that one will provide his the best to win ......... lets hope for closer matches and to have exciting cricket...

I am proud in my team they played very well they are the only team bowled out all team except Australia they took 41 out of 50 wickets with the so called week bowling linup Anyways i wish all the best to PAK and WI let them go thru the Finals i want to se a strong show from Mahela also he is my favourit player from Lanka and well 'played' Aus!

How poor Virat kohli performance against english bowlers.... he seems below average.... only he likes to play against asian bowlers... I think dhoni is a good captain... but no one is perfect.. he should have given ashwin a chance just after youraj over to build pressure... Hafiz is also not good enough... instead of giving over to shoaib malick he should have introduced Umar Gul.... luck was with Pakistan today... Any win in cricket world who can say Yasir Arafat is better than Abdul Razzaq ... I think no... why they gave priority to Yasir.... Both Pakistan and India have best natural players but unmanaged... they don't know what they have to do...

Congratulations to Pakistan for winning against Australia AND making the semis. Congratulations also to India for a good tournament. It's tough that one bad loss would knock you out whereas Australia, Pakistan and West Indies make it with the same win loss record (and WI with two super over wins and Oz with a D/L win). And India's big win against England did not count for NRR calculation (something for ICC to look at - in the next tournament it could be some other team, not India which seems to be every non Indians favorite whipping boy) As for you front foot lunge - did you say India and Pak were ordinary teams? Well these ordinary teams beat Eng & SA and Australia. Any thoughts mate?

Sangakkara Nostradamus----right before world cup began there was a interview with Sangakkara.... After the article about it published in Cricinfo there was a huge controversyl among fans(not among media) because he mentioned about all the countries which had a good chance to win world cup but never mentioned India. He mentioned AUS,Pakistan, England,SA and he hailed West Indies as one of the best team...Lot of Indian and Sri Lankan fans argued there but Sangakkara never said anything about it again....Dont knw whether he guesed it or not but somehow India couldnt make it to even semis...So lets see Sangas vision was right or not after next 5 days...If he is correct WI or SL will lift the cup....feel sorry for India but they are still a very good team...wish they will recover this blow quickly....

This is indeed a rea; poor show from Captain cool, always believe Raina should bat at no 4 at least fro India. He is the best batsman in 2020 for India. Also Dhoni should atleast blv his bowlers, why was Ashwin not bowled front up, somewhere in the 6th or 7th over. Questions galore, but bitter truth is India has lost. Never give excuses of tough group, difficult conditiions etc... its pure lack of professionalism. With 2 of my favorite teams knocked out, I hope windies take the cup to caribean, sry India sry newzea

well im a Pakistani and im glad to see Pak in the semi but seriously what is india doing with sehwag and gambhir opening the innings, how long would dhoni keep on persisting with them, really sad to see ajinkiya rahanne not even being selected for the indian wc squad and why did they take manoj tiwary with the squad???? tiwary and rahanne should've been opening the match rather than sehwag and gambhir and then looking against the SA trouble against spin I think India would've been better off including harbhajan rather than balaji, don't know what the team management is doing....

well...its just bad luck for India not to qualify after 3 teams were tied on same points.Dhoni can be balmed for not including harbhajjan against SA even though Balaji took 3 wkts in this match and he should have bowled out Ashwin in 1st 10 overs only.To dismiss any team under 121 would have been tougher for any bowling attack.Whatever people may say abt Indian bowling dismissed three strong opposition teams to win the matches. The problem was with batting and startegy by dhoni/coach/team mngmnt, here I explain.Indian tried 3 spinners against Eng which is weak against spin fine but why play same 3 against Aussie..weird.Then next they played 3 seamers against Pak... fine...but then why play same pacers against SA..again weird and illogical. We just pick horsed for courses and pay the price.SL are best in this regards followed by Aussie NZ.Pak here is decent but India and SA are very poor picking right men.Why SA left two stars of IPL in previous matches???difficult to understand!!......

Hi everyone, I think it is not nice to blame on the weather, or other team performances when you have not performed well enough. What all have forgotten is that if a particular team are the wold champions they should not be bothered about other teams. Every game counts and every run counts. You have to strive hard to win each and every match you play.

India was one of the favorites to win the T20 world up, but unfortunately they are out of the tournament. In any game we should be ready to accept win or lose. That's the spirit of the team. But we never saw IPL kind of cricket from the friends. I was quite disappointed and only Virat was consistant but they never played to their potential.

Posted by Glorizee on (October 2, 2012, 17:54 GMT)

Simple and smart -- Maximum India can reach is super8 and that is it .. They never belonged to Top Four -- They do not... Thank you South Africa...! Pakistan is lucky to have two fine friends in Sri Lanka and SA ... Indeed -- Dont believe :-D

to all sachin bashers, I would like to ask you a question now.... what would you ask now???... take out sehwag and gambhir and dhoni and raina(from tests) and rohit... do you even have so many "talented young batsmen" to fill these places... one century by pujara and you rediculed sachin... With this horribly out of form team, I actually want to see your sorry faces in the absence of sachin... Anyhow, if you want sachin out on the basis of performance, there should be 4-5 more batsmen who should go before him and captain cool is on top of that list.... Stop saying no to Rohit Sharma, there is not a single better player or more talented or more gifted or more aggressive or more elegant or more deserving or more trusted or more athletic etc. than him in India.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 17:48 GMT)

It's true that India did not qualify for the semis but it was really a good tournament for India on the whole. To start with, they won four out of the five matches played. More importantly, they managed to bowl out the opposition in each of those four matches. That, I think is a very big positive India will take from this tournament. The bowling, apart from the Australia Mae, has been generally economical. Every team can have a bad day and one should understand it and take it in the right spirit. We should be happy with the fact that we won two of the three matches in the Super 8s, despite being in the "tough" group.

Posted by BroccoliPower on (October 2, 2012, 17:48 GMT)

Australia game was lost cos of the rain? Seriously Dhoni?

You know what the biggest flaw in the Indian team is? (might be the fan base too) Its the fact that they are in denial of their flaws. they live in denial that they were outplayed massively by the Australians. They lost by a huge margin, nothing but themselves are to be blames. As long as you dont learn to admit your mistakes, you will keep on making them, where as what you should focus on is not making them over and over again. You make a mistake admit it take steps to rectify it and move on to greener pastures. thats how the world works, your no exception. You lost, you go home, dont take away anything else from the other team.

Now that ive said that, India, thank you come again! lol

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 17:48 GMT)

this indian defeat is mainly bcoz of poor captaincy by dhoni. after taking 3 wickets, how on earth he kept ashwin out of the attack n brought him when du plessis was well set. all the captain in this group are not up to the mark!!!! anyways, best of luck to Pakistan. Plz bring Sami in for SF.......Cheers!!!!!

Congrats to Pakistan on reaching the semis but i think that Sri Lanka is most difficult team in this tournament ever seen.their spin attack and batting is good enough.Pakistan should to strugle hard and we show that who is the father of inn... you know.is only and only Pakistan

Posted by analyseabhishek on (October 2, 2012, 17:48 GMT)

Had India batted solidly enough (instead of try hit every ball in the beginning and try to post 200) and targetted a total of 170- they'd had had a much better chance of restricting SA under 140. Sadly, it was not to be- and what was The Talented Mr Sharma doing? He did not show any intent at all while batting- hardly the solution for a side trying desperately to stay afloat by scoring as much as possible in the stipulated overs... And the height of defensiveness- saving your best spinner for later overs, instead of attacking upfront!

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 17:48 GMT)

India is going back to face some harsh criticism and Pakistan and Sri Lanka are through to the semi final and one of them have 50% chance of winning the T20 world cup. Good riddance to the paper tigers. Sehwag did not do much really after all the hype. Why Rohit Sharma is even in the team is anyone's guess. Gambhir flopped too especially in a match that required a huge score with a 30 run tax. Bowelrs were ok but today not that great. Don't know what Dhoni was thinking of trying a part time Rohit Sharma to bowl to class batsmen. Thankfully he only went for 13. This is where you needed a Harbhajan and Ashwin open the bowling to slow it down.

Of course we are all theorists but a big one was required. If it was IPL these guys would have put on a fireworks show for sure.

Well played India won 4 out of 5 matches beat Eng , Pak and SAF much better performance than 2009 and 2010 editions , bowling performed decently though was termed as worst . Chawla /Harbhajan could have made a difference on today's pitch . All the best for 4 semi finalist . Have a gut feeling that WI will win .

DHONI at presentation "If you take the Australia game out, where the rain intervened, we performed brilliantly and can't have control over how other teams played," an also disappointed MS Dohni says. "Overall I'm quite happy with how the team performed. There were instances where we should have had 10-15 runs more on the board. We lost too many wickets early." THIS IS PURE TRASH. I am a indian and great fan of cricket. But really Dhoni ? did we perform brilliantly. we got cloberred by australia. and thanks to Virat won the game with pakistan. and now you play a demoralised SA team and win by one run. Stop blaming others and giving execuses. If not for World cup 2011 in india and corruption in SL - we would not have won the world cup either.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 17:44 GMT)

Man,winning is not enough, winning with proper run margin is imp...no doubt dhoni is great captain, but not a great player like pointing...no winning attitute..

Posted by spiritwithin on (October 2, 2012, 17:44 GMT)

@SirViv1973,even though india did'nt progressed to SF but they did'nt played badly in whole tournaments except that one bad loss against aus,see the whole picture, they did beat pak and SA in super 8 and england in league stage, only in NRR they were ousted, regrading riches of IPL then lemme tell u that all nation has their own T20 league in which many international players participates, most players now plays in subcontinent frequently so their is nothing like home advantage as far as T20 is concerned

Posted by Sanawana on (October 2, 2012, 17:43 GMT)

Rain Rain Rain and it really rained! Why won't Dhoni stop saying rain; take it like a man and be honest! this is getting embarrassing now...

India could have increased their NRR in the match against Pakistan.... :(

Posted by Master_Mihil on (October 2, 2012, 17:43 GMT)

Well this is how the cricket goes. One day you loose another day you don't. The country with the IPL cannot enter semi's of T20 world cup, played on pitches that they previously thought would assist them. But players of a country that are banned in IPL enter the semi's as the most consistent performer in T20 world cups. It's kinda looks bad for IPL, don't it?

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 17:41 GMT)

India going out makes a lot of people happy. I read a lot of comments yesterday how India will still make it to the semis because of IPL and stuff. With India not making into the semis that puts a lot of speculations to rest

Minnows of Asia out.so there won't be any minnow thrashings for the Aussies.time to play some real cricket with real oppositions.good luck Aus team.

To all fellow Indian fans - it's not the end of the world, the sky did'nt fall. As a team we played quite well in thsi tournament, and as Dhoni said, things could have been a lot tighter in the lone match we lost had the spinners not had to bowl with a wet ball on a juiced up pitch. I don't usually attribute our losses to bad luck, but this time, it just was'nt to be. And let us not forget that 4 out of 5 games, this much maligned bowling line up bowled out the opposition.

Posted by suman2 on (October 2, 2012, 17:41 GMT)

Enough sometimes has to be enough! Get rid of Dhoni as test captain & Rohit Sharma as a player. Sharma needs a break! From all forms of international cricket. I wonder if ever the "potential" would be realised, I doubt if it is real at all. Were he not from Bombay I think he would not be playing today.

dhoni's first mistake was was not plannig for the entire tounament , how cud he not expect such situations like ties of this sort, point no 2 , he shud have opted to play sehwag against australia in the earliergame , at the end of it sehwag does not waste balls , his strike rate is always better than some one like rohit or irfan , mojoirty has to agree with me, today we are out of tournament only becauause of of dhoni and his fat headed ness , now a days he does not want seniors around him , he wants only juniors , beacause dhoni wants to dominate , does not want to win , he has to remember , he won with the old horses

Posted by bhrangi on (October 2, 2012, 17:39 GMT)

@SL fans: U wont agree but its the fact.,., from the heart SL fans will be very happy for 2 reasons., 1. India knocked out ( Will be very happy if IND fails) 2. U dont need to face IND in semis( Most of fans wont accepthere but they ll know it ).,, As an indian fan ., Its a bad luck., dont want to blame or point anyone. Ind should have won australia or atleast tried to lose with Less RR.,

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 17:39 GMT)

through out the posts it seems the SL fans are afraid of India.. LOL.. u SL is just a per avg team.. just making throught the semis bcoz u r in a easier group and also by some chance. Definitely Pak will get a better of u. Pak made 4 out of 4 occasions in the semis and also Pak proved if u take Watson early then Aussies deserve their rank as 9 in ICC T20 tankings. Today Aussies play just to score 112 and not to win.. shame on Aussie spirit.

Posted by NP_NY on (October 2, 2012, 17:37 GMT)

Very proud of India. Four wins and one loss in the tournament and the only match we lost was because of the rain and the fact that the spinners couldn't grip the ball. Maybe India wouldn't have beaten Aus but would have got very close and made it to the super 8 on net run rate. Today after knowing that we are out of the semis, the Indian players showed a lot of heart in going for the win and winning the match against SA. Well done team India!

@SirViv1973 actually sir, I am not going to complain...I will be the first to admit that Dhoni has taken so many controversial decisions that never should have been made in the first place (reference to Rohit Sharma's over). I think that Dhoni wasnt told that they are actually defending 121, judging by some of poor decisions he made. Full credit to SA and Du Plessis for a brilliant knock despite India winning the match.

Teams who do not let us play IPL so that we get isolated,, who rob us of our world class fast bowlers are both out of the tournament.. haha .. its gud now u will get more time to practice for ur IPL and champions trophy back home.. v dont play IPL and still the only team to always reach SFs.. n here is India who never went beyond super8 after the inception of IPL.. hahaha

This is Dhonis blunder by not bowling Aswin up to 11th oven even though he knows target. Second by sending Rohit the big IPL hero at 4th position.Third even after watching the pakistan match didnt go with a 2nd frontline spinner.

So its better we change dhoni with Virat in nfuture

Posted by bMike on (October 2, 2012, 17:35 GMT)

After 8 consecutive test thrashings again it was a knock out in Australia. Then again a knock out in Bangladesh. Agiain a knock out in T20 WC. Back to back knock outs. OMG.. every time playing a tournament away from home soil means a knock out. Okay tell excuses now. 1.ball was too round. 2.bat was too wooden. 3. Too much Oxegen in air. 4.....5........6.........hurry up tell tell all the excuses now. See who has to eat the humble pie :)

All credit to my team Pak today. They beat Australia comprehensively and just when they needed to. Great matchups coming up in SFs. Can't wait!

We never learn anything from pathetic show of RohitSharma. Blame Srikanth for all the mess he has done to this team. He selects Balaji, Rohit Sharma, Piyush Chawla by seeing their T20 performances in IPL. Hope Sandeep Patil makes some intelligent decisions for long term.

@SirViv1973 We owe our ticket home to a splendid performance by the Aussies and we have no one but ourselves to blame. That does not rule out the inferior quality of the teams in group B. Group toppers SL have barely managed to beat a side that was shout out for 80 by India explains a lot. Mark my words buddy. The two finalists will be Aus and Pak. SL and WI can book their tickets back home after the semis.

Well Congratulations to Pakistan. India knocked out - Good for Sri Lanka, Good for Pakistan as they qualified, Good for all anti-Indians as it would give some satisfaction to their souls and Good for me as well as now I can concentrate on my work. Now I care LEAST whoever lifts the cup as my all favourite teams Ind, SA and NZ have been knocked out but my gut feeling says the final would be between SL and WI and SL will win. Last thing but not the least - Even if India lose 8-0 or 800-0, I will always be there to support my nation, no matter what. Proud to be a die hard fan of Team India. Hindustan Zindabad !!

All three teams India, Aus, and Pak lost one match heavily. The net run rate plan is unsatisfactory. I would take a random draw in such circumstances.

Posted by Livinitupnowww on (October 2, 2012, 17:26 GMT)

That's how you play cricket. SA played their game no matter what the situation was. Australia on the other hand played & lost their game for a totally different reason. WI will make Australia regret what they did... LET'S GO WEST INDIES!!!

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 17:26 GMT)

As i see, some are syaing that Australia was more concerned about cementing its place, this is why it did not try and win, well please watch the match , first of All pakistan won when they got the two W's out cheapley, secondly, when Aus gave up, at that moment they needed 52 of 15 balls, they knew they can never make it especially the way umar gul was bowling those yorkers ! So please keep up the sportsmanship spirit and dont take anything away from Pakistan, pakistan out-classed australia by manipulating their weakness of spin by bowling 18 overs of spin to them !

Not necessary to talk about Rohit Sharma he will enjoy his stay in the team as long as possible he have a good backing of Sachin otherwise no other player would have stayed in the team inspite of failures and repeated failures.

Bring fulltime administrators to the board kick out Srikanth and Sreenivasan where they get time to see and have a look at the performance of the members they are in their own business.

I am not disappointed with India's performance keeping players like Rohit, irresponsible players like Shewag and great gamblers like Dhoni will add much spice to negative performance of the team.

See you all in the next world cup of course without Rohit Sharma

Posted by Hira1 on (October 2, 2012, 17:11 GMT)

Pak played marvelously and they deserve to reach semis and Indians were just poor ...though SA did every thing to loose but in the end the spirit was lacking from indian side

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 17:10 GMT)

I thought India played fairly well....congratz to boys for putting up a good show in all matches barring one match of Australia.....India is known to be a slow starter but World T20 cup format does not allow this.....Although I never hoped that India was going to once still being an Indian I am disappointed in general not by team though.... Pak needed the win more than India and I hope Pakistani public will forget the loss against India.

Prediction : Australia will win...only bcoz SL is not having luck on their side in recent years.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 17:09 GMT)

Thanks to some lovely cricket from Pakistan team today against Australia and extremely poor Cricket from India, we are through to the semis where we meet Sri Lanka.

No IPL, no international cricket at home, no nothing yet we still keep proving our skills and capabilities to the world.

I will surely miss SA and England from these semis.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 17:09 GMT)

I think Dhoni should no longer be captain of India. Kohli should replace him as captain. Sehwag and Gambhir should be given rest for a couple of series. Rohit Sharma must get Voluntary Retirement. He is good for nothing. Ajinky Rahane, Manoj Tiwary and Pujara should be included in place of Gambhir, Sehwag and Rohit Sharma. Also, Umesh Yadav, Dinda and Varun Aaron should be in the team. Balaji should be kept out.

Posted by KSSL on (October 2, 2012, 17:07 GMT)

We had a lot of hopes on Indian Team in ICC 20 before start, you disappointed us. They never seems to be serious at all..see the running between the wickets for SA, 1 to 2 and 2 to 3.. Indian Team..pls learn from SA, Dhoni you should be shamed of your captaincy. No strategy, no enthusiasm, no zeal to win the match. No plan B for your match against SA.. Shewag...no hope at all..

Posted by SirViv1973 on (October 2, 2012, 16:57 GMT)

Well India heading out, I'm expecting a torrent of Indian fans commenting on how unfair the draw was and how weak Group1 was in comparism to Group 2, rather than looking at the failings of their own team. whatever the draw was india with all the riches of the IPL and the favorable conditions should have been doing much better than the Super 8's!

it kinda weird. How do SA know open with kallis? DO they read my posts? seems like so. They dropped levi and went with kallis opening. SA gona win and india are out. India out mainly because of lopsided loss against australia. if just win needed india could have put defensive field setting. India do not have fire power in spin or pace. Very average side. Rohit sharma is UTTER WASTE. Gambhir complete out of form. Duncan fletcher should be fired. India will never go over top because duncan fletcher is not good for india. He is another greg chappell. India should remove him. Or more test losses waiting

from here if india cant make semis it will b dhonis foolishness .why you keep your best striking spiner till 10th over in this kind of track try to learn from pakistan, gul ball only 2 overs in 20 overs

Australia( or should i say hussey) may have taken it easy againt pakistan but didn't india take it easy too against pakistan, when they could have easily improved there run rate with wickets in hand. Like India, Australia did only what they had to do, especially batting against a good bowling side in pakistan. India or any other team should not have to rely on other teams.

so IND finally bow out once again,,they shuld have scored 200 to be safe but SAF were also to prove a point,Ind are themselves to blame they shuld have taken run rate factor when they were chasing,vs PAK,PAK always have luck on their side when they need to qualify,Now i hope SRL shall bring them down,,also IND are becoming too dependent on others to qualify, they dont do is their own, very inconsistent,Kohli FAILED and it was all over..well fro IND board its cash rich CLT20 coming up,as 4 indian teams are there still IND fail to qualify for T20 WCUP SEMIS wat a pity,

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 16:34 GMT)

It was a mistake to include Gambhir and Rohit in the team today. Instead, Manoj Tiwary and Harbhajan should have been included.

I still wonder, why Ajinkya Rahane was not selected. At least now, Gambhir and Sehwag should be dropped from T-20 squad and Rahane and Manoj Tiwary should be in.

@fan_of_good_cricket - If that's what makes you feel better, you can think so. but serioiusly!you really think the Aussies lost purposely, hahaaaa. Anyteam would take on a meager Indian bowling side over Pakistanis any given day. Even the mighty south africans struggled against them. there bowling unit is probably the best in the tournament, Indians are over rated and inconsistent, this tournament would be better off them.

Pakisthan have dominated Aus in UAE and won the t20 series against Aus . Aus were rattled by the pak spinners and here also they struggled and after losing 3 quick wickets Aus just wanted to make sure that they themselves go through . As for India they had a good chance of getting a very good run rate boost in the Pak match which they did not tried . It would have been better to be 128/5 in 14 overs then 128/2 in 17 overs. And Aus is not as good as they might seem . Once Watson goes that middle order is very very weak . It was evident in the t20 series in UAE . However teams were not getting past Watson but finally today law of averages caught up with him .

I'm surprised to see why SA sent India in which creates India get better possibility of making last 4. Winning by 31 runs won't be that difficult at Premadasa stadium on a surface used before. Hope SA too was not dancing according to BCCI's music.....If SA had batted first, India making it to last 4 won't be an easy task....Hope cricket be the winner instead of money....

@Sourabh Sharma: Get your facts right before talking. "In Australia, Australia who were UNDEFEATED lost to Srilanka when India made chance". Was Aus undefeated at that tournament? No Aus had lost 2 matches to SL out of 3. Indeed, Aus thrashed India thrice but not SL. Dont try to think that always Ind should win and other teams are losing to fade Ind marginal hopes. On the other hand, marginal hopes means that they havent played well in the tournament.

Bad Luck India vs South Africa. India will be out of T20 world cup. South Africa will wins this match. Pakistan enters in the semis.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 15:55 GMT)

Now India need to keep South Africa just below 96 to qualify for Semi's.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 15:54 GMT)

Australian batsmen's celebration on reaching 112 clearly showed, that they were trying to make it harder for India to overtake Pakistan in the NRR. It would be a good lesson for Australia, if Pakistan beats them in the semi final or final. Even otherwise, if India has no chance, I would prefer either West Indies or Pakistan to win the cup. Definitely NOT Australia. In fact any other team winning the cup is OK.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 15:54 GMT)

Yeah very surprised even if you think of Ratings an India vs Srilanka semi final is much bigger than a srilanka vs pakistan. Any game involving India is big for ratings. but anyway this will not be so.. so let watch the champions league in SA next and forget about the finals--which will be even lesser coverage than the India Pak game

gambhir has got a real tangle in his mind the way he plays getting bowled in different ways , he needs to get back to playing ranji and sort his game out , he is a fighter and will come back stronger .

Posted by itsthewayuplay on (October 2, 2012, 15:50 GMT)

useful cameo from rohit who was the 2nd highest scorer at SR of 92.59 when there were no fielding restrictions. scored the same as total of gambhir and the so-called destructive sehwag with a combined SR of 96.15 when fielding restrictions were in place. how much longer will dhoni persist with sehwag and gambhir. dhoni should forget about the results and use t20 to blood new young and inexperienced players. this is a young person's game and sehwag who is out of form and out of shape his time is up. like tendulkar on recent form has done very to justify selection in any format. there's no shame in going back to domestic cricket and earning your place again. in the meantinme opportunities should be given kohli, raina and rohit sharma amongst others.

@Sarathi Ratnayak Afraid of India?

Posted by Prakmca on (October 2, 2012, 15:48 GMT)

If Zaheer is not bowling to his experience, Defeinitely i should be dropped from the Indian team....... He is not at all contributing anything for the past few years..... A bowler never gained any experience for so many years.... Usually bowlers learn from their mistakes and comes good as year progresses... But he is not that prospect.

Posted by vipravara on (October 2, 2012, 15:44 GMT)

As India scored 152, if SA are restricted to a total below 110, Aussies will be 2nd in the group. Let us see as SA started their chase.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 15:41 GMT)

First inning finished India made 152..now my gut feeling is saying India will not qualify because they had their chances to improve their run rate on Sunday against Pakistan but they didn't bother..if they had chased tht target bit quicker it could have been different story..good luck to Pakistan and I really want them to go through from Indian supporter..

Posted by yorkslanka on (October 2, 2012, 15:40 GMT)

to all indian fans moaning about Australia's performance today: their ONLY objextive is to ensure that they qualify, who else qualifies with them ahould have no bearing on them..its up to YOUR team to ensure that YOU qualify and quite simply, if you can defend 120 you do, if not you dont...dont make excuses...

I think SL does not want to face India given the mauling they took recently. Thats why we all the happiness from SL fans on the Pakistani win

Posted by Alexk400 on (October 2, 2012, 15:34 GMT)

Rohit sharma killed India's chances. This is what happen when people rely on potential vs production. India's mistake is india have 100% strike players

Posted by fan_of_good_cricket on (October 2, 2012, 15:16 GMT)

Australia never looked to be trying to go for win. In the last overs of their innings, it was clear that they were just looking to assure their own place in semis while making sure that the margin of defeat is sizable to make it harder for India in the next match. Pakistan is much more 'comfortable' opponent in big matches than India. Remember 1999 WC Final, and WT20 2010 Semi Final? Some may argue and would try to remind us 2003 WC Final. But WC 2011 QF is more fresh in Australians memory. Though I'm happy to see Pak chances of qualifying for semis getting better with this win, but I am more a fan of good, competitive cricket.

Posted by Vikum72 on (October 2, 2012, 15:03 GMT)

Things does not look too bright for India at the moment at 90/4 in the 13th over. They need to finish strong if they are to achieve 31 run wining margin required to make it to the semi finals over Pak. SA are already out of it hence no pressure on them. They will go hard at the India total. Don't think SA want to go home without any win in the super 8 stage.

Posted by PakCricSpin on (October 2, 2012, 14:49 GMT)

It sucks that India and South Africa got to see the result of the Pakistan vs Australia match. In any other sport they would have the matches played simultaneously for fairness sake. Right now its unfair.

Today Australia did not its willingness to win.. Fear facing them in final?

India Will not Qualify - Take my Words, mark my Comments From A Proud Pakistani Cricket Lover !!!!!!

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 14:46 GMT)

Dont get me wrong, I am not Indian supremacist (in cricket of course) neither I am jealous of any other team, I am not even a will_go_to_extremes_fan but did ANYBODY else sees the pattern what I see? 1. India makes her life tough, beats some team to ignite hope among her fans. 2. second team which was not losing till now loses match or a weaker team(who had less chances) wins against a stronger team. In Australia, Australia who were UNDEFEATED lost to Srilanka when India made chance (or say gave HOPE to fans); in Bangladesh same Srilankan team loses to Bangladesh(!), here again we see MIGHTY Australia loses (that too with a big margin!) when I say hope which is DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL to TV RATINGS (!!!!) . I feel something is very wrong here. dont get me wrong it is not about a specific country but it is intriguing may be I am now even questioning India's world cup victory!

india have the two supermans dhoni and kohli but spiderman rohit sharma will also be very usefull in this avengers game

Lights..Camera..Action ...So the final (almost) inconsequential game of super8 is underway with a small matter of 'pride' left.Pack up!!... in a few hours from now for the Indians ...ready for a short flight back...Well ,about the first game Pak proving the enigma yet again ...always dangerous and a real threat going into semis...What a good comeback from the shambles the previous game vs India. India were gifted a win with a Pak team that failed to turn up on the day.For the Aussies a rude wake up call before the real business starts.Still the team to beat despite being outplayed today.Convincing wins in all previous games , but the rest have to buck up and deliver the goods, Watson and a couple others are not going to do the job always and all the more it's time to stand up and be counted . Time to pull up the socks for the whole 'team' ...

Itz great to see Lankans and Pakistanis in the Premadasa are supporting for SA. Well we all Lankans are with you SA.no doubt SA is a great team.Players like JK deserve a WC medal around his neck.

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 14:31 GMT)

No no, dnt even think that india can win today..... they can not beat any good team. so start packing the things....

I hope India will not qualify. But I have no regret. We have already won cup once. Let SL AUS WI win it. That match against Australia spoiled our calculations. But it's cricket, anything can happen. Let see who wins this time. Best of luck to SL WI AUS PAK - From india

An average team so overated has no chance against this mighty SAF side its good to see new and real world champions soon best of luck though in that match India :P

pakistan run rate is better then india, and they beat aus by 32 runs.how it is possible that india defeat SA by 31 runs and qualify for the semi final...anyone tell me plz...

Posted by   on (October 2, 2012, 14:19 GMT)

Yes Australia well done for reaching semi-finals even though we lost our main objective was that now we should win it from here. As for India in this match lol good luck but should pack your bags for yet again being so ordinary. The semi-finals should be very interesting now.

Posted by mark2011 on (October 2, 2012, 14:15 GMT)

I think the way SA is bowlling, India gonna post 160+ score and win with 30+ margin to qualify semi final and knoc out Pak...

Posted by Joy_Shree_Krishna on (October 2, 2012, 14:13 GMT)

Aus's loss has virtually pushed India on the brink of elimination, beating SA by that margin isnt goin 2b that easy.

Posted by vipravara on (October 2, 2012, 14:10 GMT)

As some may say/suspect that Australia engineered a defeat to eliminate SA, SA too have the power the decide the position of Aussies (2nd) in group 2. Let us see as India just started their batting.
