So lopsided was West Indies' obliteration of Australia in the second semi-final of the World Twenty20, the victors had near enough to 13 overs to bask in their looming progress to the final against Sri Lanka.

Matthew Wade's departure in the eighth over of Australia's reply to 205 for 4 left George Bailey's team at a forlorn 43 for 6, their campaign collapsing in a few fevered minutes. Bailey was left to offer his team's last gesture of defiance, a breathless 63 from 29 balls, but it served only to narrow the margin.

That they were chasing such a tall tally was down to Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard. Gayle was starved of the strike early and later battled an apparent muscle strain, but in between produced an innings of controlled aggression that helped foster a trio of partnerships with Pollard, Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Bravo. Pollard clumped three of four sixes to be brutalised from Xavier Doherty's final over of the innings, a sequence that broke Australian spirits.

This much was clear in the early overs of the chase, the only blow landed by any batsman other than Bailey were the verbal ones delivered by David Warner before the innings had even begun. Australia entered the tournament resolved to fight with Test match zeal for the T20 trophy, but they have ultimately exited the event at an earlier stage than Michael Clarke's team had done at the 2010 tournament in the Caribbean.

Darren Sammy's team have some concerns over Gayle's fitness, and will be a little perturbed to have lost focus momentarily during Bailey's rearguard, but will otherwise enter the final with the confidence earned from a thumping result. West Indies' bowlers showed plenty of wit and variation on a dry surface, Ravi Rampaul catching the eye by using the short ball to make Australia's belatedly included David Hussey look nobody's idea of a saviour.

Warner and Shane Watson - until a few days ago the prohibitive favourite to be the Player of the Tournament - were both winkled out by the flat leg spin of Samuel Badree. Warner's dismissal required video evidence to confirm that the stumps had been flicked after the batsman missed a cut shot, but there was no room for doubt about Watson's exit, losing his leg stump as he tried to pull a skidder. What followed would confirm the suspicion, maintained all tournament, that Australia's batting fell away beneath them.

Michael Hussey had performed a miracle to get Australia through their semi-final against Pakistan in 2010, but this time skied Samuels having made just 18. Cameron White glanced Rampaul into the gloves of Denesh Ramdin, and David Hussey's two deliveries in the tournament provided a reminder that his technique against the short ball is some way short of international standard, irrespective of a handsome record in all domestic formats.

Bailey's subsequent counter-attack seemed driven by frustration as much as anything, and may serve at least to shore up his place as a batsman in Australia's limited-overs plans for the future. But the final margin will stick uncomfortably in the gullet of Bailey and his entire squad, as their tournament ended with a disheartening whimper.

Such a scenario had seemed remote when West Indies made a sedate start on a fair surface. Gayle began carefully, wary of the new ball swing on offer for Mitchell Starc, and watched from the other end as Johnson Charles heaved without foot movement and edged behind.

The non-striker's end was the vantage point from which Gayle watched an inordinate amount of deliveries, as Australia's bowlers and fielders did their best to keep him away from the batting crease. His brief encounters with Doherty were satisfying enough, but Brad Hogg was a little more successful in keeping the runs down with his indecipherable googlies.

By the time 10 overs had elapsed Gayle had faced only 18 balls, while Samuels and Dwayne Bravo, chosen ahead of his brother Darren, took a greater share. Samuels managed a quartet of clean blows before being outsmarted by Pat Cummins and bowled by a slower ball. Bravo soaked up plenty of dot balls but summoned a six whenever he was becalmed.

Australian sloppiness also helped West Indies keep momentum. Wade missed a full toss to allow four byes, Starc swung one delivery down the legside for five wides, and both Hussey brothers allowed bouncing shots to burst through their hands on the boundary.

The innings still required a supercharge, and it arrived in the 15th over, delivered by Hussey. Gayle sent one delivery into the stratosphere, and pinched another two boundaries for the over to be worth 19. In the next, Bravo crunched a steepling six but perished to a flatter hit next ball, the partnership ending at 83 from 51 balls.

Pollard offered sound support in the closing overs as Gayle finally enjoyed a greater share of the strike, though he was by this time clearly hampered by an apparent abdominal strain. It mattered little in the final over, however, as Gayle slammed a full toss for six first ball then left Pollard to collar three more. Pollard's dismissal from the final ball of the innings was scant consolation for Doherty, and Bailey will wonder at length whether he might have handed the ball to someone else.

Innings Dot balls 4s 6s Powerplay 16-20 NB/Wides
West Indies 42 13 14 46/1 73/2 0/8
Australia 42 12 4 42/3 10/1(15.1-16.4) 0/2

Its inherent that Indians support SL and WI.Win from either of them is fair. These guys play honest/gentlemen cricket, treat to watch them. They have fought hardway(needed destined super over in run up to final) to be in finals. At the outset, their success is becoz of their own game planning with out much thoughts or insight or intruding other team plans.

Posted by   on (October 7, 2012, 3:16 GMT)

@GIRIchamp, You are wrong. Sri Lanka is the best team in Asia who playing On bouncy pitches. Recent South Africa and CB Series prove it. India failed to made final in CB series too

Posted by VivGilchrist on (October 7, 2012, 1:09 GMT)

T20= power over technique. The two teams in the final emphasizes the massive gulf between Tests and T20. They don't even appear to be distant cousins. Having said all that, I hope WI lift the trophy but the news that The 2 test series between these teams that had been scrapped for an ODI series shoes the focus of these 2 cricket boards. Sad.

@Columbo_SL, Bro , I have not abused anyone here, I just said that SL bros should focus on their own team than talking about any other team. No bad feelings here! I have not abused SL team here check my posts here!

@TommytuckerSaffa, Uve been going on and on for a long time. Dont worry we can understand ur frustration that ur CHOKER TEAM still hasn't reached the finals of any ICC tournament. But stop taking it out on other teams

Posted by WTEH on (October 6, 2012, 16:19 GMT)

Hey Sammy and Otis, do you remember the days that you said, we do not need Gayle or Pollard in our team. Do you think, you'll even make super 8 without them. Gayle without WI is a joke. If Gayle gets out, you can start packing your bags even before the game ends.

Posted by Douggy on (October 6, 2012, 13:34 GMT)

This is what Windies are capable of when they play with all their potential. It was not only Gayle but credit most also be given to Samuels, Bravo and Pollard they all made contributions. From the start of the game Windies were playing positive cricket and this is the same approach they will need to take against SL. Its going to be a tougher match but goodluck W.I!

Posted by shaun65 on (October 6, 2012, 12:44 GMT)

and i think windies were bit sloppy in the field previous night, apart form wicket they bowled many loose deleivery too..may be thats becz target is too huge, rare chances to loose that match but you can expect a better show on the field with the team like windies which have great fielders pollard,bravo....

Well done Pirates of the Caribbean....for the last ten years we West Indians have been clamoring for the right (mix) team to be selected..magic happens when the right players are given a chance ...sorry the selectors had to take four years to give Samuel Badree his chance when his economy rate is the best in the world.Whatever happens in the final does not matter any more..it is great to see W.I.management, selectors, coach, captain come to their senses at last !!!!!

Posted by NP_NY on (October 6, 2012, 10:49 GMT)

To everyone saying IPL didn't help India win: THE GOAL OF THE IPL IS NOT TO CREATE MAGICIAN INDIAN CRICKETERS WHO WILL JUST WAVE THEIR MAGIC WAND AND WIN ALL INTERNATIONAL T20 MATCHES (that would be boring, isn't it?). IPL and Champions tropphy are tournaments meant to entertain the Indian cricket lovers and anyone else interested in that kind of entertainment. And they are successful largely due the huge fan base in India. So whether anyone likes it or not, IPL and Champions trophy are here to stay. It's just entertainment, most Indian fans love it and so do cricketers around the world (like Mahela, Sanga, Gayle, KP, Ab Devilliers, Husseys, etc.). So deal with it!

Posted by   on (October 6, 2012, 10:07 GMT)

@pat, you are correct in saying that any team can win a game of t20, it just depends which team turns up, for example look what happened a few weeks ago when Afghanistan almost beat India in the group stage. Also the scheduling is perplexing given that it's during the monsoon season as well having the top ranked sides play each other in the super 8's, I reckon there should be more group games so the likes of Ireland, Afghanistan, Kenya, etc can improve and get more match experience against the better sides. As for the final, it is a toss up and I don't really mind as SL and WI are my favourite teams, so good luck to both sides.

@777aditya.... You can hope from 'the heart of your bottom'ut the truth won't cahnge? The T20 final is anybody's- but you have to fancy Sri Lanka with home field advantage and a side of unconventional talent? It sould be a great final and I for one see two deserved finalists. Good luck to both teams - especially to Sri Lanka! Yor country and your wonderful people desrve it so much.....

I am really surprised with the so called weak bowling lineup we did not allow the opponents to score more than 200 runs but look at the Aussies having so much strength in bowling and yet they are ripped apart...I am really proud of my team...

Posted by colombo_SL on (October 6, 2012, 9:22 GMT)

WI is god team. Their strength is batting. They lost the super 8 & practice match to us. I hope same will be happen. Since WI is there, i feel some relief. Though, they have the ability to lift this cup. Hpe good match & wish both teams!

Posted by SoulTaker on (October 6, 2012, 9:07 GMT)

colombo_SL : You are right mate...We accept that it is not due to the rain that we lost the match against the Aussies..its just one bad day for our team...we failed to remove the openers...We Indians know that and the sad part is Dhoni not accepting it....We clearly lack good bowlers that was the only difference...but still our team bowled out other teams three times it is quite an achievment right...you should also point out the positives in that...Dhoni is managing with what he has and he is damn good in that..sometimes it works sometimes it dont...

Posted by colombo_SL on (October 6, 2012, 8:56 GMT)

@Agila, I agree you completely defeated us in SL. Never take credit out of you. You said look after on our match without commenting here. The problem is you while doing it, tell me to don't do. I just reply to your comments. Please correct me if i'm not. Critics are warmly welcome.

Posted by pat- on (October 6, 2012, 8:51 GMT)

Guys, the weak group(according to some fans who are searching for reasons of their team exit) has produced the finalists. If any team struggle to finish on top 2 in their group means they cant win the trophy even though they play in other group. For example India lost to Australia. It can be group stage, super 8 or semi finals. T20 IS UNPREDICTABLE ONE PERSON CAN WIN THE GAME FOR YOU. WATSON BROUGHT AUSTRALIA TO SEMIS EVEN THOUGH AUSTRALIA NOT DESERVE IT AS A TEAM. T20 IS MORE ABOUT STRONG INDIVIDUALS THAN A STRONG TEAM.

@MasterClass: You are absolutely master class. Appreciate your comment. I know that rain did some effect on the match result. In the EngVs. SL match, Ajantha Mendis couldn't grab the ball due to dew. But, in professinal cricket, excuses are not enough. I take my hat off you on your comments.

Reminiscence of WINDIES of 60's to 80's. When they click the opponent is just CRUSHED. Total devastation for the opponents. When they click as a team we can see "CRICKET AT IT'S BRILLIANT BEST". That's why they are known as Jaggurnaut of cricket. Hats off to you for that glorious victory. Myself and my other friends who support WINDES, wish you all the best for all success in the grand finals.

Posted by baba.zulfi on (October 6, 2012, 8:09 GMT)

The final against Srilanka is a tricky one to call. SL or WI? Well I think SL have quality bowling and WI might struggle against them and on the other hand WI dont have a quality attack to defend a slightly lower total. If WI click, im sure not much effort would be required WI bowlers. If they dont, I expect SL to take the game. So its 50/50. Lets see

Posted by Baber_Baloch on (October 6, 2012, 8:08 GMT)

next match SL must stop this gayle storm ,they have good spin and planing.

Posted by colombo_SL on (October 6, 2012, 8:06 GMT)

India lost to Australia in Australi in Tests & in Tri series. It is not due to rain. They lost to Aus in this T20 match. Please accept the reality. You couldn't won that match not because of rain, but you couldn't get openers out early. If you got those wickets yoy defintely bowled out Australia & in the final now. Reason is you try to depend on part time bowlers. It went wrong that thay. Understand the reality. Otherwise you can't improve. India is my favourite country except SL.

Posted by   on (October 6, 2012, 8:03 GMT)

@Vinod Villa Pudasun oh really? But we only gave up too much runs in one match.Despite your assuptions about Indian bowling being weak they never let oppo nets reach high scores like this

Posted by colombo_SL on (October 6, 2012, 7:57 GMT)

@Bruisers; Yes bro, I agreed that India crushed Pakistan and England. Absolutely brilliant. Credit to India. But your lost to Aus is not only the rain. (3 mins rain). If your group is the strongest, why so caled any team couldn't make into final. You are thinking on the past glory & not on the current performance. Make a habit to appreciate performance.

Posted by StevieS on (October 6, 2012, 7:55 GMT)

soumyas Australia lost to Pakistan on purpose to knock India out?? Mate I don't think they sell a big enough tin foil hat for cases like yourself.

Anyway to all those who were saying group 1 was the easiest group because all the top teams in pool round were in group 2, where are you now? Considering NZ drew with both these teams its safe to say group 1 was by far had the best teams in it.

Posted by colombo_SL on (October 6, 2012, 7:34 GMT)

I never want to under estimate India team & fans. I really respect them & India. We know you are the 2010 WC Champions. I just comment on some comments of your fans. Correct me if i'm not. Since we are in the final, i'm not going to say SL is the best team in the world. But now they are doing well at the particular moment. Even we can lost at final. Doesn't matter. We appreciate good cricket. Cheers.

Posted by VivtheGreatest on (October 6, 2012, 7:27 GMT)

To all my fellow Indians who keep on alleging that Pak and Aus conspired to keep India out, just stop that drivel. India are out bcoz we weren't good enough. Our bowling was as mediocre as usual and batting usually our strong suit was totally dependent on Kohli and as for the captain most of us in India know that he plays in Tests and T-20's only due to his CSK connections. Plz give credit to the teams which qualified instead of looking for silly excuses

Posted by JG2704 on (October 6, 2012, 7:22 GMT)

Judging by the amount of comments on team India , I'm guessing they qualified for BOTH semi finals which I have to admit is a great achievement.

Posted by JG2704 on (October 6, 2012, 7:20 GMT)

@OneEyedAussie on (October 06 2012, 00:12 AM GMT) Guess it's a tough situation and captaincy is all a bit of a gamble. Bailey could have gone the other way but then Gayle etc may have got more momentum in the middle overs vs spin and then the pace overs which were bowled at the start/middle might have gone for more at the end. As I asked in another post , was there anything wrong with Mckay? Is he injured or not as good as he showed in England. Aus seem to be possibly the only team whose pacers did a better job than their spinners

Posted by sonu181290 on (October 6, 2012, 7:19 GMT)

bye bye australia ,pakistan, by the way srilanka also. aus need to be the habits of loosing and pakistan habit to loose from india.

Posted by VivtheGreatest on (October 6, 2012, 7:18 GMT)

Congrats to West Indies for a fantastic win. A real Calypso performance from the batsmen but opening the bowling with 2 spinners?? How the times have changed!! All the batsmen down the ages who have suffered at the hands of some of the most fearsome fast bowlers in history must be cursing their bad luck!

Posted by   on (October 6, 2012, 7:18 GMT)

Monday's headline, SRI LANKA BATTERED BY GAYLE FORCE. Great performance and team effort by the Windies. Windies is the only team which was really challenged throughout the tournament unlike SL. SL will choke and dance to some Caribbean tune on Sunday, that's for sure. All the best Windies, Go get the cup.

Posted by 777aditya on (October 6, 2012, 7:18 GMT)

Here's hoping from the bottommost core of my heart that Sri Lanka continue with their 'final match choker form' and West Indies begin the domination era that is due since ages now. What would be really interesting is to see is if WI can translate any of this ODI and T20 form into test cricket as well. The fact that Darren Bravo and Dwayne Smith (Dr. Smith) cannot even get into this jam packed talented side bodes well. When I was just 8 visiting my aunt in Nashik, I was amazed at a scoreline of WI 272/2 in a test team that boasted of Haynes, Greenidge, Richards, Richardson, etc and immediately became a huge fan and have since always hoped that WI get back to the top, where they belong.

No wonder, IPL have been doing wonders for many players and teams. For SL - Mahela realized how good a opener he can be, I think it was for Punjab Kings XI, he opened for the first time in T-20 format and scored a 100. Gayle, Pollard, Bravo, Narine, Samuels - All Popular players of IPL who perform for their national team WI too. Woohooo !

India must be really frustrated now loosing to Australia ( A team rank less than Ireland ) India cannot win international games consistently without their spinning Allrounder. How the earth you go to a big tournament like this without Ravindra Jadeja ( this guy can bat & hit big sixes & reverse sweep well , good left arm spinner and can field well) Sri Lanka are bless to have a player like Jeevan Mendis and Australia are bless to have player like Smith playing domestic cricket in Australia now. Sri Lanka should win this tournament. I don`t think Hearth will bowl the last over of an innings. what a stupid captain is that. Asking to bowl the last over to left arm spinner when their is two big hitting players on the crease, may be he didn`t have options, because he didn`t do a good job in first 10 overs.

i'm happy becuz of many reasons, 1) I was always wondering why despite having so many power hitter they don't perform on single day and win ? finally they did.... 2) i love watching Gayle and pollard exploding....... 3) Australia who lost deliberately to pakistan by big a margin to knock india OUT got their own taste..happy to see australia out of the tournament......

Windies were outstanding they have been playing some fantastic cricket with very high performance as a fileding unit and now showing it with bat and ball too.

Posted by   on (October 6, 2012, 4:47 GMT)

@Miriyala Sunil the reason the Aussies didn't dived around was because of the conditions of the field; I have not seen so many miss fields due to bad bounce and rough patches. Not much they culd have done. All the teams including south Africa and new zealand struggled. 3rd class outfields. Tournaments like these shouldn't be organised in small countries like Sri Lanka because they have fewer grounds and low maintenance.

Look at the number of times India has won the title. For all other Asian teams I think even Kochi Tuskers are good enough.

@ Narbavi: Sl vs. SA match is a rain curtailed match of 7 overs. You can't find the better 20 overs team in just 7 overs.

I don't how much crowd were in the match Australia vs India. But what i heard was there were lot of Indians outside the ground selling tickets.....So i don't know how many didn't show up after buying tickets.

WE THE SRI LANKANS NOT TALKING TOO MUCH.IT JUST A ANOTHER FINAL FOR US.NO MATTER WHO WINS.THIS IS NOT FIGHT BETWEEN ANY COUNTRY THEN NO NEED ARGUMENTS.

(FOR INDIA FANS WHO COMMENTS AGAINST SL- TALK TO YOUR HEARTS AND UNDERSTAND WHY LOTS OF SRI LANKANS NOT LIKE OUR COUNTRY THEES DAYS)

THANK FOR GREAT FANS (Special PAK)WHO GIVES US LOTS OF encouragements..

To all the SL fans who are talking about India- you need to consider 2 points here.First, brining India here is out of context, you are just using the name to vent your frustration out.Second, As a die hard Indian fan I'm convinced that the form of current players and the way the bowlers bowled, India didnt deserve to be in the finals. So make no mistake, West Indies being already tipped to be the favourite before the start of the tournament is going to win the World cup, Lets see if your team can stop the likes of Gayle, Samuels and Pollard ... Go Windies Go ..

Posted by   on (October 6, 2012, 3:48 GMT)

SriLanka will remain a Bride's maid this time as well.West Indies are fully equipped with power hitters, allrounders and match winners to take the World cup.SL has to wait for next time.In the past I'd have loved to support Srilanka, but after watching the comments of their fans in Cricinfo and the way they supported SA with match against India, I would never support them again.Go Windies, I bet the whole of India wants you to win the World cup and bring back smiles in the world cricket.Enjoy your cricket.. Good Luck

Posted by Jith_blore on (October 6, 2012, 3:44 GMT)

It all depends on Gayle in the final. If he clicks, he is going to trash this mediocre srilankans. Otherwise no chance for WI.

Yes, that's why India is now at home and enjoying rest.

Good work by Carribean Kings! Win the finals because you deserve this

Posted by Ramansilva on (October 6, 2012, 3:36 GMT)

@Indian fans, You don't have to be so bitter. Your team never won a S8 match since 2007, until they win two matches in this tournament (though one match was by just 1 run margin). That was a big improvement. You also could guard your Worldcup record against Paks. Now the (W)Indies in the final be happy at least for the name sake.

Posted by spirit_cric on (October 6, 2012, 3:36 GMT)

Everyone said that group 2 is tougher & both finals will b from group 2.But see what happened. Both final are from group 1.This is a good lesson 4 indian fans who are really over rate their team. Now evereyone can see what the tougher group is.Good luck both teams!

Aussie spinnners are lousy .... fast bowlers are inexperienced .... and captain is not doing intelligent bowling changes.... sorry this is exactly the opposite Windies will face against Sri Lanka...

and i think windies were bit sloppy in the field previous night, apart form wicket they bowled many loose deleivery too..may be thats becz target is too huge, rare chances to loose that match but you can expect a better show on the field with the team like windies which have great fielders pollard,bravo....

well, congrats windies...i supported australia since i started to learn cricket...they were unbeatable but not anymore...my fav bowler jhonson didn't play how can you expect new aussie young team to win the cup..bdw my fav batsman is playing hussey brother...doesn't matter now becz they already gone...i want again bravo heroic, malinga yorker and kulasekra swing deliverys..the most amazing and xciting part will be kula's swing delivery, thats treat to watch..i always enjoy...

Posted by   on (October 6, 2012, 3:01 GMT)

First time in my 20+ yrs of watching cricket - I witnessed very bad body language from Team Australia on fielding. They are so many 4's went flat on ground and only 3-4 feet away from the fielder. They always used to skid and try, but just had chosen to walk and collect the ball from ropes. Team australia has contributed a lot to how a team should field, bowl, bat, strategry etc etc. But today with the sub par captain and unknown players - spoiled that exhibit. Gayle or what ever - its a bad sign to move on. Good Job Windies - you guys earn the spot and all set to lift the World Cup - after 30+ yrs, a tribute to all those legendry players out on the beaches with Kingfishers.

Posted by Ramansilva on (October 6, 2012, 2:59 GMT)

If the pitch was so bad at the Premadasa stadium as the armchair critiques claimed few days ago, how could Windies score over 200? Anyway, it was good that Windies showed that Aussies are not that mighty.

Posted by skumar77 on (October 6, 2012, 2:49 GMT)

Loved the way that the West Indies called Australia's Watson bluff and decimated them. After their pathetic performance against Pakistan, the Aussies did not deserve to be in the finals. Hussey, go pump those wrists now!

Two of the better teams have made the finals. Good luck to the finalists. My heart is with WI but Gayle's bravado at the presentations yesterday was worrying. Overconfidence can kill skill as we have seen with the Aussies.

Posted by Des_65 on (October 6, 2012, 2:43 GMT)

The best teams were indeed in other group. That doesn't mean that T20 could not be won by teams in other group. In T20, someday any team (including a minnow), will win the cup. If you want to hasten the time when it happens, play T10, or E8 or F5 and there will be more chance for everyone. Why not have O1 (eliminator) or just a toss?

Vinod Villa Pudasun, You are right! India would achieve it in 11 overs. To be precise, 264/0 (11x6x4=264).

Posted by shanebabo on (October 6, 2012, 2:20 GMT)

to all you Pakistan and Indian supporters out there claiming their team would have done better than Aus, they may well have on the day but they weren't good enough to make the semi's so all you can do is speculate. All the hate shown for the Aus team is a sign of the hurt still being felt by teams all around the world from previous Aus teams domination of world cricket. T20 is the bottom rung on the ladder when it comes to importance in world cricket, so who cares who wins a game of hit & giggle, it comes down to a bit of luck on most occassions. One day & test cricket is where true cricket skills are tested & the Aus team can hold there own with anyone else in these formats.

Posted by Des_65 on (October 6, 2012, 2:16 GMT)

rbhimal, West Indies also won twice against Sri Lanka in 1987 Reliance ODI World Cup by a huge margin. 13th Oct 1987 WI 360/4 (Richards 181, Haynes 105) beat SL 169/4 (Ranatunga 52*). 21st Oct 1987 WI 236/8 (Simmons 89, Logie 65*) beat SL 211/8 (Ranatunga 86*). These were 50 over matches. BTW, SL lost all (3x2=6) matches in their group of 4 teams.

Congrats to WI. However, had Australia been able to control their bowling, then it could have been an intense game rather than just one sided game. Look at yesterdays game where both team competed for every single run and no one knew what's happening until the 19th over of PK innings. I hope much more intense game in the final regardless of who wins the World Cup.

Remember how everyone was crowing on about how the Super 8 group with Pakistan, South Africa, India, & Australia was so much better & that almost certainly the winner would come from this group. Guess what group the two finalists were from?

Posted by LilAnzac on (October 6, 2012, 1:11 GMT)

Too good Windies!! Batting on a tricky deck was exceptional. Not even the greatest 11 batsmen ever were gonna get near that total. Chris Gayle is the best T20 batsmen the world will ever see!! Just hope he can do it again against SL. Should be a cracker of a final if he can. If not I think SL will stroll home. Hold your head up Aussies noone gave you a chance in this tournament and you did us proud. Just beatin by a better side on the day in the end. Congrats again Windies!! Lastly too all the whingers and moaners who like to knock teams and take cheap shots you know who you are.. Learn to love cricket for what it is and be entertained, who cares if your team loses. In this format any side can win on any given day so own up and admit if your side has been outplayed!! Anything else is just disrespectful to the opposition and our great game of cricket.

Posted by BrisVegan on (October 6, 2012, 0:56 GMT)

@disco_bob: That someone was me. I rue those words now. Well.. no, not really. We were beaten comprehensively by a better team after all. No excuses (unlike fans of other teams). All the best to WI and SL in the final, may the best team on the day take home the trophy. No shame for Aus if WI hold up the trophy. Lots of pressure on SL I think, a home final, should play into the hands of WI but you never know in this game do you!

Posted by Majid_gaffar on (October 6, 2012, 0:45 GMT)

What a perfect display of failure by Aussies! Why not ?They rehearsed for it against Pakistan so nicely.Failure begets failure. They lost the winning momentum after the loss against Pakistan.Bailey"s excuse that time was we can't go undefeated in the finals. This increased the confidence of West Indies that Aussies are not invincible.I agree T20 is like a lottery but 50 % of battle is won if you shatter the confidence of opposition.Any way Best of Luck to Sr-ilanka and West Indies for the finals.

Posted by Marcio on (October 6, 2012, 0:41 GMT)

Gimme a break @ hyclass. Arthur just coached AUS to equal 3rd in the T20 WC and you'd think they finished dead last from your writing. How about a 'thank you Mickey' instead? It's a fine line betweeen victory and defeat in T20, even when the scoreboard shows a big difference. I could point out various moments where the game could easily have shifted AUS' way with a little less bad luck. But it's all over. Time to move on.

Posted by   on (October 6, 2012, 0:24 GMT)

Well done windies now complete the job win on Sunday

Posted by Marcio on (October 6, 2012, 0:21 GMT)

Unfortunately the game was lost in the last 4 overs of the WI innings. Most of the innings the WI were just doing OK, heading for a slightly above average total of 160-170 on that wicket. As Bailey showed, the WI have perhaps the weakest bowling lineup of the Super 8s teams (except for Narine), and anything up to 180 would have been achievable on that surface. But that's T20. I understand the usual haters on here, but the comments from some AUS fans is simply sad. They finished equal 3rd in the T20 WC. I'd call that a pretty good result. So how about you show some gratitude? As we saw in the first AUS-WI game, on another day it would be AUS thrashing the WI bowling (1-100 after 9 overs, as opposed to the WI 2-70 after 9 in this game). It didn't happen today, and that's just the way it goes. The WI have actually played poorly all tournament up till now, much worse than AUS. It all came off for them on the day. That's life.

Posted by shortsillypoint on (October 6, 2012, 0:21 GMT)

So much for the weaker / stronger side of the draw - both teams in the final are from the weaker side! Another weak team NZ took the two finalists to Super overs. Slice of humble pie for many people on here!

Posted by Cpt.Meanster on (October 6, 2012, 0:21 GMT)

WOAH !! What a game !!! Chris Gayle, you beauty !! I have no words - Just amazed at this brilliant performance by the Calypso Kings. Forget "Fire in Babylon", this is "Fire in Colombo". SL will have a tough game on their hands. Anyway, 2 worthy teams are playing in the final. Good luck to both and may God bless T20 cricket.

Posted by   on (October 6, 2012, 0:14 GMT)

Do-herty was a true Do Hurty in the previous match with 3 wickets and good eceonomy, but in this match, West Indies performed that "Do-Hurt" on him; the knock out punch was delivered by the "heavy weight" Pollard! A true T-20 show, at last in this tournament.

Posted by OneEyedAussie on (October 6, 2012, 0:12 GMT)

Well played by Windies - that final onslaught by Pollard was like watching nails being driven into a coffin. Australia was always going to struggle as the pitches started to turn late in the tournament because they have no wicket-taking spin option. Doherty and Hogg were ordinary throughout . Bailey's decision to bowl Hussey and Doherty in the final overs was awful - Gayle was very subdued against pace. The Aussies also gave away around ~20 runs in extras and through poor fielding. All in all the Windies total was easily around 40 runs more than it should have been given the Aussies performed at international levels of fielding and Bailey made reasonable decisions.

Posted by brittop on (October 6, 2012, 0:12 GMT)

Why would Australia not want India in the final - they'd already beaten them. Since they only needed to get ahead of Pak on NRR, can't blame them if they made sure they got the runs they needed to do that. India had the luxury of knowing exactly what they had to do to qualify, but couldn't do it.

Posted by   on (October 6, 2012, 0:10 GMT)

Bailey did bail out at least his own future, if not the team's success! Once everything seems to be lost, it was a different Bailey.

Posted by Marcio on (October 6, 2012, 0:04 GMT)

I wouldn't criticise Doherty too much. He bowled well in his previous overs, as did most of the bowlers. How Dar gave Samuals not out for that plumb LBW when he hadn't scored defies belief (Doherty was the bowler), and that changed the entire complexion of the game. It was really just the last four overs that gave the WI a big score. They rotated the strike well but were struggling to hit cleanly till that point and looking at about 160-170 total - just check out how many edges and mishits there were on the cricinfo commentary. But that is the nature of T20. A few overs of clean hits at the end - even from a tailender like Gul (PAK vs SA) - and the game is gone.

There are two teams going to play the finals. They are WI and SL.Can we please talk about them.I'm really tired of the" rain" excuses.

Posted by hyclass on (October 5, 2012, 23:49 GMT)

When Mickey Arthur was being promoted as an Australian coaching option, I opposed his selection. He had shown no intelligence as coach for WA and had pushed Shaun Marsh as a national candidate with the view that his record was irrelevent and that he somehow had class that had never materialised in his results. I opposed Cummins selection for Tests, another one that Arthur pushed fo, on the basis that he had already been injured at 18 and would most probably be injured again. Warner is ordinary and his game full of holes. There were a raft of others too long to list here.On every selection that I have opposed in the last 18 months, I have been vindicated. This Aus team wasnt just beaten,it was routed under pressure in the last 2 games. Its recent Test wins have been vs an Indian side at an all time low with no viable attack,a lucky series win v SL courtesy of a sanctioned ICC Galle wicket and vs a SA side that hadnt played long form cricket in months and was lacking match fitness.Ordinary

Congratulations to the Windies. A very well-deserved win. I am not a betting man but I thought the odds advertised here in Australia were ridiculous. Oz favourites? They had to be prepared with an eye for home sentiments only!

Posted by heathrf1974 on (October 5, 2012, 23:43 GMT)

Brave effort by Bailey in the batting. Poor bowling by Doherty with full tosses and half volleys. If the Windies got 180 the Aussies may have been a chance. But the psychological advantage of getting 200 runs (the Aussies panicked) and the superior spin of the Windies made it impossible. Go the Windies in the final.

Posted by landl47 on (October 5, 2012, 23:39 GMT)

Just to think, both the finalists had to play a super over to beat New Zealand. It just shows how much of T20 is who gets hot on the day.

Posted by svengali47 on (October 5, 2012, 23:22 GMT)

Watson, Warner and Starc have been masking the incompetence of the selectors and the tactical ineptitude of the captain who has no idea on when to use his bowlers properly. Until selectors understand how 20/20 works we will always struggle. They should pick a squad of about 13 players like the following and stick with them. Match winning young players who will fail at times but between them will win more often than not. Such a team is Watson, Warner, Wade, Maxwell, Steve Smith, Henriques, Cutting, Mitchell Marsh, Steven O'Keefe, Dan Christian, Cummins, Starc and Butterworth. I would also blood the 2 wicketkeepers from the Under 19s World Cup.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 23:20 GMT)

While. The west indian batsmen extended the batting power play upto 20 overs their bowlers ensured bowling power play for the entire innings when they fielded next. May be the ICC will bring a new law of restricting it to 2 sixes an over. Great carribean show revival of WI dominance in world cricket.

Posted by lynds on (October 5, 2012, 23:18 GMT)

I'm an Australian and I was going for the West Indies! A LOT of Australians don't like the ethos of arrogance and over-the-top sledging that has been part of the Australian team for decades now. The only Australian player I like is Mike Hussey. Unlike the rest of the Australian team, he walks. Congrats West Indies.

Posted by lobsterchampion on (October 5, 2012, 23:02 GMT)

Congrats to WI team. They played brilliantly and deserve to be in the semis. Australia were lucky that Gayle face only 41 deliveries. Else WI score and ultimately the margin of defeat would have been even greater. On a separate note I see a lot a SL fans commenting that India is a ordinary team and blah, blah, blah. Let me refresh your memories, this so called ordinary Indian team beat you 4-1 in ODI series and comprehensively beat you in one off T20. This so called ordinary Indian team also thrashed you in Asia cup earlier this year. As for CB series in Australia, India may not have entered the finals, but they were 2-1 in head to head matches against SL. So SL fans, think then comment.

Posted by magzi11 on (October 5, 2012, 23:00 GMT)

Well I do agree with CricketFundas that SL does have a good bowling line up however WI batting may destroy it as well. Well surely the best team will win the cup. However Pakistan was unfortunate to lose the semis but again SL performed very well. But congratulations to Pakistan for reaching the semis for the fourth consecutive time.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 22:54 GMT)

Wesi Indies should take a good look at the wicket. If it is prepared for spin, play badree again. If it is for pace, play an extra batsman. The decider may very well be the team that win the Toss. If the wicket gets rough when WI have to bat (last), the boys just have to remember 'back yard cricket'

Game wide open. The pitch might be the decider too.

But I prefer to see WI win this one.

What a demolition! If WI batsmen bring their A game to Sri Lanka, I simply cannot see them losing. Pollard hit 3 sixes of yorkers! Gayle was imperious against everything. But it's going to be a great game no matter what: both teams are on fire.

Posted by hasitha81 on (October 5, 2012, 22:06 GMT)

What a finish to the tournament. No one from the so called strong teams. Like I commented to a previous article, the top 8 teams are can perform well on their day and win the match. If Chris Gayle and company unleash a batting display like in Semis it will be tough for SL. However, the bowling SL have is unorthodox and special. So, Mahela and team will need to come up with a better performance in such a case.

I believe SL will have the edge in the finals. Anyway, looking forward to a close final.... Good luck team SL

Congrats WI, there is no denying they were better on the day! Oz - all up it was a sound tournament. When Watto had the great start to the tournament I wondered whether he could carry that thru to the important games - he couldn't. No offense to SL fans - but I want the WIndies to win! That being said, the amount of Runner Up tournaments the SL boys have played they do DESERVE to win one, still I want the WI to win - hopefully it is a good game.

From Garry Sobers to VIV Richards, then Brian Lara & now in present, emperor of West Indian cricket empire Chris Gayle the crownless super king. I think the final would be Chris Gayle vs. Sri Lanka. Congratulations both the finalist team. Every week & non-test playing team have many things to learn from Sri Lanka. How a small country can beat strong countries by their limited ability and keep continue their form in the crest of success. It' all about unity, determination & hard labor. And, I predicted 2 months before about West Indies it would be dark-horse in the ICC T20 world cup. Best of luck for Sri Lanka & one of my favorite teams West Indies.

Great lession taught to the aussies after the attitude showed by them( so called mr. cricket) on reaching a score of 112( as if it were 212). Nice that west indies made it to the finals.SL will really consider itself lucky that they didnt have to face india at any stage in this tournament and thus had a smooth sailing to the finals..having said so, i repeat dats what dhoni deserves.Hopefully Indian cricket moves in the right direction after this slap on the face by destiny, and CRICKET itself gets a boost by having a new winner in West Indies.

WI have a powerful batting lineup on paper and while they've been kept relatively quiet for most of the tournament, you always felt that they were going to explode at some point. In their previous win against the same team, Australia looked capable of chasing down a total like this. It was always going to be a challenge though and, as soon as they started losing wickets, it was pretty much all over. I hope for WI sake that they haven't peaked a game too early, but I also wish SL all the best as they have been consistently good. Bad luck to Australia but they seemed to go off the boil after a good start to the tournament. T20 is a fickle game and it doesn't take much to slip up in such a short tournament.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 20:54 GMT)

@Ibbani: you are right, nothing to learn from WI & SL. Of course it is these two teams in the final and not India, nah nothing to learn. One of them is ranked number 1 T20 team in the world by the ICC...nothing to learn. One of them played 4 WC finals in the last 5 years....nothing to learn. both of them comprehensively beat teams from the so called "group of death and no team from the group of death made the final....nothing to learns. India plays only one specialist spinner in their crunch game, all other teams pack their side with maximum possible number of specialist spinners..... nah nothing to learn. India T20 side can't bat, can't bowl, Can't field. Keep sticking your head in the sand mate...we don't mind. We learn all the time.

It looks like a Gayle Force Wind blew over Australia tonight in the heat and humidity of Colombo. The dessemation of Australia was all clear to see and shows once again how dangerous West Indies can be. They surely are the favourites now as that remarkable performance by Gayle in large part along with a dashing cameo from Pollard set them up nicely for the finals on Sunday. Sri Lanka watch out...if Gayle doesnt get you then surely Pollard will..

Awesome performance WI! What a contrast from the SL vs PAK match... Great entertainment! SL and PAK match was a great display of bowling and scarping for every run by two great teams. This one reminds me how Gilly stole the show in 2007 WC from SL by demolishing our bowling... Brilliant innings by both Gayle and the other WI batsmen. Hope SL will have better luck containing a team that all of a sudden looks to be living up to their potential.

Goes to show that any team can win in T20 format. However, to win a tournament you have to be consistent throughout like SL and WI, they are both playing good agressive cricket. WI seem to have the edge with big hitters, good bowling and fielding. AUS showed again that they can't bat against slow bowing.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 20:39 GMT)

Another sensible and fabulously performance by Caribbean teams. All credit goes by Chris Gayle due to the way defensive attacking, his approach playing brilliantly that why fist time in t-20 world cup in 2012 score goes more than 200, mean while pollard also gives valuable effort and bowlers doing very well so Caribbean team beats Australia in long margin. The main approach of Gayle in today match's defensive attacking and do not lose their wicket till end of the innings, if all hitters like Sehwag, wanner so on are playing like Gayle approach especially in t-20 format we can except lot entertainment and more competition. In this world cup some players effort totally team dependent like if Gayle not in the Caribbean side it may be difficult to reach in final.eg England team with out Pietersen. So in short we can say If Gayle click in final match against Sri Lanka then max change Caribbean team will be champion and also some other factor also dependent .

Posted by phoenixsteve on (October 5, 2012, 20:18 GMT)

Well played Windies who were reminiscent of the old Australia. Ruthless professionalism displayed by them & they thoroughly outclassed this rather weak Australian side. It must be a worry for Aussie fans to see how little talent there is in the yellow and green? As Jonesy2 and Marcio might say "the (talent) cupboard is very bare" Makes England's poor showing against the Windies look OK I guess? On the evidence of what has been seen the Ashes should be a lot easier & I'm more confident that we can keep them where they belong now! I saw a side of Chris Gayle that I didn't know he had - a patient and paced Innings. I always thought Watson to be over-rated and he was certainly shown up today as a 'bits and pieces' cricketer? Great to see my 2nd & 3rd favorite teams fighting it out - it will be a good final. On this showing the Windies should start favourites - which is probably not a good thing? Good luck to both Sri lanka & Windies who have shown that group 1 was the tough one after all!

All SL Bros, You seem to be licking your wounds from April 2011 and again those at your own backyard not so long ago. Be thankful to the tournament draw where you're now and not to face your "regular" nemesis. Better focus on your team than the Indian Team.

Posted by NP_NY on (October 5, 2012, 20:12 GMT)

@nilb: India doesn't have to "dream of such a feat". India are the real (one-day) world cup champions, so we're not too bothered about the T20 lottery. Besides India has already won a T20 world cup. Also India beat SL 5-1 in all formats in Srilanka just a couple of months ago. So we know where India stands with respect to SL (just look at the recent one-on-one records). SL has made it to the finals without beating India, Aus and SA. They deserve to get thrashed by the West Indies tomorrow.

"Talk now", the finalists are both from Group B, and both beat the top teams from Group A. Will be a blast of a Final on Sunday, Sri Lanka vs West Indies will be insanely competitive and will be guaranteed to go down to the last over. Sri Lanka will put an effort in combating Badree and Narine, but the real worry man is Rampaul. He may be expensive but he will take out a couple wickets in the final. Likewise, the West Indians will be worried about Mendis, but will overlook Malinga who (gut feeling here) will have a good night on Sunday.

The West Indian boys and their fans deserve to celebrate every moment of this victory. The WI are always over looked, even by their fans. Chris Gayle has all the bragging rights and he's free to use them. Bragging or being over confident doesn't win you a T20 match so paying attention to his statement in the interview, is very irrelevant. Everytime the WI boys dance and celebrate, their fans in the Caribbean celebrate and it's a great moment for West Indies. Minnows, Chokers, losers, pop-corn..... these are relase shots. shows the frustration of fans who think there is only one nations that is capable of winning. You can label the finalists any way you like. Once you have released your frustration by putting labels to the winners, close your eyes for a while and reflect. WI & SL have not choked yet. All other teams have choked and packed their bags. In the finals one more team will choke. We call it loosing, if there is a winner there has to be a looser. This is cricket, this is a sport, so show some sportsmanship. If India is the only team that should win, then why have a tournament?

Posted by happy-go-lucky on (October 5, 2012, 18:59 GMT)

To all my SL bros. Congrats on your great performance and reaching finals. Good Luck. But keep in mind T20 narrows the gap between sides and increases luck and "freak" factor. One freak 10 ball 30 changes game. Just coz you made it to finals and others didn't does not mean SL team is way stronger than Ind, Pak, SA or AUS. As I said, in T20, there's nothing much to pick among these sides.

May the better team win, hoping for a cracker of a final.

Posted by nilb on (October 5, 2012, 18:58 GMT)

@ibbani I'm sure you would like that to happen. I'm sure many others including yourself expected that to happen in the Super 8 match between WI and SL as well. But that didn't happen and SL restricted WI to 130 something while 5 wickets remaining. SL beat WI, WI smashed AUS and AUS smashed IND. So if your are a IND fan (which I think most prob you are) know that you support a team thats mush below the standard of SL. Please don't insult other teams.

Posted by ravikini on (October 5, 2012, 18:55 GMT)

Nice write uo Daniel Brettig. The sloppy Aussy fielding was a horror as well as treat to watch. IPl has resurrected the careers of great many foreign cricketers like Watson, Warner, Gayle, Narine, Pollard to name a few. It was pure slaughter of the Aussies, and highlighted why they are ranked behind Ireland in T20 Format. As for final, the verdict is already out in the open, Chris Rules. But I am sure the wily lankans will devise a plan for the likes of Gayle, Samuel and Pollard. As a cricket fan, I want a close contest in the finals, not the one like today where the margin of victory is 73 runs. With Champions league too around the corner, I cannot stop drooling.

@Deep Biswas: Thats nonsense, some of the windies players played in those other leagues and If thats the arguement, why didn't the format do wonders for India? They did lose two matches remember? The fact is, WI is on the rise, and THE FORMAT(not the leagues) give a chance to these players and countries to show case their talent, esp. in this shorter format. It is the players that benefit the league a lot more and all these leagues will provide that opportunity.Lets just appreciate the WI players for their talent and hunger for victory rather than trying to give credit to IPL.

@Nimantha.. ur name never ends - WI were never the minnows in T20 cricket, so only one minnow entered the final and thats SL. SL is lucky not to have faced India at the knoutout stage. No issues though, Gayle is going to trash SL black and blue just like the Aussies, who are a much better team than SL. The two semi-finals were played at the same venue, same pitch and at the same start timing but yet, the two couldn't be more different from each other.

The curators of SL should ashamed of themselves and you would never see scenarios like this occur in Football, hence the reason why Football is popular around the world and cricket is still lingering behind.

@Deep Biswas: Such a nonsense comment, the Cricket of those leagues including our league BBL is no different to IPL. All you can think of is financially but are you even earning a part of it? :) Only reason IPL is successful because of 1 huge population and 2 many Indian investors so not special whatsoever. Posted by Nampally on (October 5, 2012, 18:31 GMT)

It was awesome display of brutal hitting by WI batsmen, Gayle. Bravo & pollard which made the Aussie fast bowlers look like club players. So complete was the dominanace that it made one wonder how did the Aussies ever came into the Final!. The Aussies were riding on the backs of Watson & Warner for their victories. The same 2 guys were the worst batsmen for the Aussies in the last 2 matches - vs. Pakistan & Vs. WI. Aussies can't play the spinners & both W's fell to the spinners. How lucky was it that the Aussies aided by rain & wet ball avoided facing 4 Indian spinners under normal dry conditions! Anyway if WI can reproduce the same performance in the Final, SL will be hammered just as badly. Gayle at his best is the most feared T 20 batsman. Hopefully he will be fit for the next match (abdominal Muscle?) to carry on the onslaught against SL. It will be amazing if WI (who qualified based on one win in super over) win the World Cup by playing best when it mattered. Good Luck WI!.

Congratulations to West Indies! For all those, trying to mock at the other group teams, Just chill out! SL and WI lost to SA and Aus teams in their preliminary group matches. Also, both SL and WI sweated against NZ to a tie and then got through a super over at spuer8 stage. This is all about T20 drama. On the day, anyone can beat anybody.

Posted by AneYako on (October 5, 2012, 18:21 GMT)

@ibbani: So if SL are minnows...then the indian team that got kicked out before the semis are what exactly?

Posted by drnaveed on (October 5, 2012, 18:20 GMT)

well played WI. well ,when super eight event started, there were seven teams out of eight ,excluding NZ who were supposed to have a chance of winning the cup.of those , Australia was the top favourite ,but they were kangarooed by the mighty WI today.Gayle was again in a great touch today.Pakistani so called hard hitting batsmen should learn a lesson from him,he carried the bat in a 20 overs format, making sure that his team reaches a winning score.he didn't panic at all, selected some balls to hit, and when he hit those balls he used perfect balance and power, so that they were big sixes that landed in the stands.but for us(pakistanis) ,it is not the end of the world,we could not win the cup,so didn't India,England,Australia,South Africa.we realy have to work hard to overcome our weakness in all the three departments of the game.in the end best of luck to the two teams in the final.

May be this is the right time now for WINDIES to regain some of the cricketing glory which has been long.Gayle and Pollard are unarguably the biggest hitters of cricketing ball.I would love to see WINDIES lift the cup. It will mean a lot to their cricket

@Australian fans - Just wondering about Clink Mckay. He looked the pick of the bowlers in the ODIs in England. Was he injured or omitted because he not as good as he showed in England? I felt that Australia were the one team whose quicks (Starc and Cummins) bowled as well (if not better) than their spinners so just wondering about Mckay.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 18:17 GMT)

Today match showed one thing. that is, how brilliant Sri Lankan attack is. WI and Aus played two games and both times Aus bowlers were thrashed by WI batsmen. but, WI played with the same team except Badree against SL and they just managed to score only 129 runs for 5 wickets. WI and SL have met 5 times in T20 WC stages and those all game have won by SL. i think Chris Gayle has played in every game and didn't manage to bring the victory for WI. i'm neither discouraging nor underestimating WI and just showed that stats for your know. WI team is just like a solid rock with batting. if you hit your head on the rock with a idea of breaking the rock, i can simply say you are a fool. but, if you use some explosives to break the rock, it can be done with ease. we have explosives to break WI rock and everyone will see on sunday which kind of explosives they are. anyway, as Sri Lankans we always love WI team. they are real entertainers along with us. Good Luck.!

great to see gayle n pollard in destructive mode.....hope they explode again on sunday and defeat so called minnows!!! the dark knights have risen SL......waiting for GAYLESTORM

@Deep Biswas: Not sure if you're being sarcastic here or not. How can IPL, get praise when the home country of that tournament has left and the SLPL home country is in the final?

Posted by Stateside_Steve on (October 5, 2012, 18:15 GMT)

Congrats WI for one heck of a win. This is what happens when you let talent play. It was sad to see Gayle and bravo on the sideline a little while back. Too bad cummins couldn't hit the deck at 150 kph against the sub continent batsmen . We now need a term ' fast track bullies' for teams that struggle against genuine spin bowling to go along with flat track bullies.

Posted by Criktic on (October 5, 2012, 18:14 GMT)

So much for the "Death Group", no single team reached the final from it. I am just too happy to see my two favorites in the final and I cant decide who to cheer for. Hope they both win! Good luck from Pakistan :D

Posted by Teamviewer on (October 5, 2012, 18:14 GMT)

It served well for both Pakis and Oz... The final match between them was a sheer nonsense and both got their own poetic justice!!!!!!

Posted by JG2704 on (October 5, 2012, 18:13 GMT)

Sad for Australia fans (genuinely) from an England fan but fair play to WI for gaining revenge within the same tournament. Obviously Gayle is always a danger when he's at the crease but I feel the 20th over where Pollard blitzed Doherty might have deflated Australia before they even started their innings. I went out for a bit inbetween innings and as a neutral was horrified that Aus were 40ish-5. I have to give captain Bailey credit for his innings but the damage was already done. Gayle's smug dance still gets to me a bit but it's not as annoying as when it's not my team which is on the receiving end. One good thing is that hopefully the fact that the 2 finalists are from the weaker/easier/minnows group might keep those quiet who say that these teams only qualified because of the group they were in. - unfortunately it probably won't.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 18:13 GMT)

@ DEEP If IPL is success INDIA should have been in semifinal...they even could' not qualify for it and elimiated in Super eight.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 18:11 GMT)

@Deep Biswas: Look what the IPl has done to India. Three T20 world cups since the IPL and still cannot make it into the semis. ahahaha

Posted by dalok on (October 5, 2012, 18:11 GMT)

An Indian fan here. Want to congratulate WI on their comprehensive win. Thoroughly enjoyed this T20 match. Even though India was in group 1, I did root for the group 2 teams in semifinal. They are just so much nicer!!! Looking forward to the finals. Not sure who I will root for in finals. WI perhaps as they haven't won one in a while and I really would like WI to make a comeback in cricket and bring their flair back.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 18:11 GMT)

Will feel bad for whichever team loses. Mahela's fourth has to be the charm. Windies may end up reviving an entire generation. As a neutral, could not have picked two more exciting teams to watch in the finals.

Totally Gyle Thrill show!!!

Posted by testcricket_lover on (October 5, 2012, 18:10 GMT)

@jezmondo Bro may be forgot Eng got ripped by IND and were all out for 80 where as AUS Won against IND Under 15 overs. So grow up Kiddo....Being an Indian I pity all those so called Indian fans who are Crying for not making it to semis and blaming others. This time our players were off track none were performing good besides Kohli.. We didn't make to Semis becoz of some pathetic captaincy who hardly scores in this format and blames pitch, rain etc etc.. To be frank no team looks superior these days. So lets stop cursing others and njoi cricket. Godd luck to SL & WI.........

@Deep Biswas; Look what IPL has done to India. MS Dhoni is watching semi finals and final on ESPN. :))))))))

WI is a very destructive when they play has a team, now the world know that darren sammy is the best captain

Posted by Master_Mihil on (October 5, 2012, 18:08 GMT)

Yeah! Yeah! Aussies were lucky to enter semi's. India was unlucky to have 3 minutes rain and get there super one hit wonder ordinary spinners to get hit all around the park and loose 5 overs remaining. And the below par 140 scored by mighty indian batsmen fretting over the fearsome Australians didn't even play a part. Good on you aussies. You showed some their real place in T20 cricket.

Posted by TheBengalTiger on (October 5, 2012, 18:08 GMT)

This is exactly what would have happened if it hadn't rained against India. Australia would have been obliterated.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 18:07 GMT)

Good riddance, to see the Aussies out. Was rooting for Pakistan, SL or WI after Dhoni successfully managed to get India kicked out of the semis. May the best team between SL and the Windies win.

Posted by colossalcricketer on (October 5, 2012, 18:07 GMT)

Well done WI...Though I am not counting SL out but I really want the minnows(Sri Lanka) to loose..!!

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 18:05 GMT)

yeah guys, @ Pak and Ind fans ... accept the fact that group consisting of teams SL, WI, Eng and NZ was tougher than the grp consisting of Ind, Pak, Aus, SA. why should we even look @ the result of league matches in which it is clearly shown which teams finished top in thr resp grps in LEAGUE MATCHES ...league matches were just for FUN.. in fact the latter grp (the one in which Ind was) was group of minnows, and let some of the frustrated souls satisfy them.

Brilliant stuff by Samuels and Sammy early on - that tiff with Warner right before their innings. Getting under their skin early on, giving it back to the Aussies!! This final's going to be amazing - 2 beach style music frenzy loving nations meeting together!!!! On a serious note, it'll be very important that WI carry this momentum and belief forward to the final. Don't party too hard tonight guys, u haven't won the final yet! My money's on Srilanka though, because all the teams that WI has beaten thus far did not consist of good spinners - Nz, Eng & now Aus. Now Srilanka, on this pitch and these conditions, i think will be too much for the Windies to handle. Looking forward to seeing a close contest come sunday.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 18:01 GMT)

Thats what you GET Australia.... Thats what you GET. Australia were lucky as lucky to be in the semi finals. Rain helped them first against west Indies. West Indies scored 191 and lost. Its ridiculous and D/L has to be seriously reconsidered. It should be canned. Then the rain helped them against India. Indian spinners could not grip and bowled short and wide and Australian openers capitalised. Imagine what would the run rate stakes would have been then! I think Australia were destined to be humiliated like this.

Posted by mikey76 on (October 5, 2012, 18:00 GMT)

Good on the west indies. I hope they go all the way. This might just give caribbean cricket the boon it needs. Randy and Jonesy are conspicuous by their absence on here. Australia are awful.

Posted by Dilruksh on (October 5, 2012, 18:00 GMT)

well the west indies are confident of thrashing SL but beware of the bowlers malinga, mendis, herath and kula.gayle gives a nice warning but dont be over confident mate things happen.

Posted by amemberoftheelect23 on (October 5, 2012, 18:00 GMT)

Great work overall with the bat and ball windies, thought the ground feeling needs a bit of work though. i will continue to say Andre R is better BATSMAN averaging in high 30s in oneday but not a good bowler though. Think the side should stay unchanged. Windies all the way!!!!!

Posted by loke_cricfan on (October 5, 2012, 18:00 GMT)

West Indies should thank IPL. IPL nurtured west Indies players like Gayle, Pollard, Bravo, and narine. If Gayle plays til 12th over in the final then the cup will be for West Indies for sure.

Posted by yorkslanka on (October 5, 2012, 17:59 GMT)

@deep biswas - the important bit you failed to comment on is "what has IPL done for your team??"

Posted by colombo_SL on (October 5, 2012, 17:58 GMT)

Please WI, don't expect for a similar kind of batting exhibition in next game. Hope you fight well, but it won't easy like you did with Aus.

Posted by ddlj26 on (October 5, 2012, 17:58 GMT)

ESPN Telecast for the highlights of this match has a disclosure..... "Please these are not for the faint hearted, people with severe heart disease or strokes should refrain from watching these highlights any time, they may cause a risk in heart attacks as the mauling delivered on the AUSSIES is unbearable to watch " LOL

Posted by MasterClass on (October 5, 2012, 17:55 GMT)

@Colombo_SL - absolutely right Indian bowling is not up to the mark...in fact far below the mark! However rain did ultimately play in Ind elimination because even if you assume they would have lost that game, the margin of defeat would not have been so big for sure. So Ind would have entered semi-finals based on NRR. Once there Ind would have had a good chance. Aus has always been India's nemesis. And I think you have to concede India have been SL nemesis, and to a certain extent even WI nemesis. But that's just a bunch of would have, could have...so congratulations and best of luck!

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 17:53 GMT)

Some indians say SL will be scared to face windies. Not as much as you guys fear Aussies dear Indian fans. My only fear is gayle will not fire on sunday and we will get robbed of a spectacular match. Windies are in sem's becoz we defeated england, and they are grateful for it. Our last outing was disappointing windies. We need a good show on sunday. Come onn! Windies!! Come Onnn lions. Rrrrrrrr!!!!

Posted by SantoshMP on (October 5, 2012, 17:53 GMT)

Seems like some of the Indian fans talking about Australia manipulating the Super 8s are delirious. Absolutely ridiculous and petty and just goes on to show the immature manner in which they view sports and games in general.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 17:53 GMT)

When you throw away a game, to set your self up for an easy draw. This is what happens. Aussies just self-destructed themselves. Lesson learned is never get complacent or start thinking about easier draws when playing a game. Just play your game and you will be fine. This has happened before. As Agassi in another sport puts it. At professional level, most teams are good. It is the one that comes out mentally strong. They just lost it when they played PAK. On the other hand, Gayle is by far the best player in the planet in T20 cricket. Finals will be interesting..

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 17:53 GMT)

SL will lose definitely.Minnows SL can be @ final in T20.

Now this is some Twenty20 cricket. I predicted Pakistan, South Africa, West Indies and Sri Lanka for semi finals and 3 of them are in. Brilliant show by West Indies I already knew that they'll be doing something special this time. Although I wanted Australia to win because my support went to Sri Lanka after they knocked us out in semis. Now it will be hard to go for one so I'll be wearing blue shirt and maroon pants. All the best to both teams

Posted by colombo_SL on (October 5, 2012, 17:51 GMT)

1. Aus below the Ireland before this cup. 2. Due to SA & IND they go up. 3. Due to Pak & WI they come down. We feel worry because we are eagerly waiting to see Aus in final & defeat.

lol, who said SL was placed in a 'easy group' and had a 'easy' ride to the final? That's what happens when 'kids' are allowed to be 'pundits' and allowed near a keyboard. The way Aussies bowled to the Windies and the Indians shows how weak Indian batting is. Give some bounce to a pitch and Indians bat like school kids. CB series anyone? @colombo_SL, when everything works in your favor then we can also give free opinions like you. Lets say for example when you plan for something and if that plan was damaged hopelessly result we be contradictory. That is what Dhoni said regarding match against AUS. He should have come up with plan B too but not sure if that was possible at that situation. I am again saying that India didn't lose to AUS but to Shane Watson. AUS heavily depended on Watson. Well finally team who performs well will win the cup.

@colombo-SL, sometimes wet ball hard to grip and the ground was wet due to drizzle,so spinners find it difficult.Did you heard after final loss World Cup 2011 ,malinga blamed the dew for not taking further wickets? Wet ball do hampers the bowlers, especially spinners.India would have lost the match but not by a huge margin. No one is giving excuses but just like dew ,it do spoil the party.Anyway happy for Westindies performances and this time going to be a new winner.

Posted by Agila on (October 5, 2012, 17:41 GMT)

@colombo_SL and the likes, We all know about SL performance. Seen it past few months starting "July 2012". SL better focus on Sunday's game. WI dont seem to be in a brotherly sentiment like PAK. Stop worrying about other teams!

Srilanka somehow close to win a world cup (they will never win outside subcontinent) without winning against SA, AUS, IND

Posted by Nightwing32 on (October 5, 2012, 17:40 GMT)

Geez the hate for Australia. Congrats to the Windies, they outplayed Australia without any doubt. Stuck to their plans and executed them.At least Australia made it to the semis which is a pretty good effort. Really don't get the hate against Australia, sure they bowled too full and sure Doherty's last over was well bad. But to say that Mike and Dave are passed it, to say that Watson and Warner are just flat-track bullies is basically stupid. Anyway what's more important is the Sheffield Shield and getting 1st in the test series against the Saffers. Final should be awesome to watch from a neutral stand point.

Posted by MasterClass on (October 5, 2012, 17:40 GMT)

The two island nations in the finals! Should be a lot of fun and we the spectators and cricket lovers will be the winners no matter who wins. I was hoping WI beat AUS but was not confident they could bring their A game and stay focused. So I'm absolutely delighted as I'm sure are a lot of other fans. This T20 started out flat but has built momentum and I think many will agree (Indian fan here) that if our team couldn't make it, then this is the final we wanted to see. Good luck to both SL & WI!

Yeah some said all tough teams were in the group 1. Tough when beating minnows. They said we only lost 1 match and had to go home because 2 man show by Aussies brutalized them. And Windies lost twice. In your face pundits. Rightly so higher seeded teams entered the final.

Posted by ibbani on (October 5, 2012, 17:33 GMT)

Guys - nothing to learn from WI or SL here. But I am supporting WI so that the Minnows are beaten royally at their home ground in front of their home crowd. Gayle is a big match player. He will make SL pay for every delivery he face. Dhananjaya - already had a facial msaage in the previous match. Hope he has duplicate tooth set this match. Ajanta Mendis, Herath, all are pop corn to Gayle. SL fans are replying to Indian cricket fans too much negatively. To their satisfaction, we 100 crore Indian cricket fans are just supporting WI so that WI win easily. There is another IND in the WI. Go Gayle, win this WC, it is yours.

Aussies wanted India not to be their opponent in the final and they ended up not making the final themselves.... Good there is afterall justice in this world :)

well done to WI on despatching Australia so comprehensively...So Sl v WI final..I think we can win it as we have beaten WI once already but more importantly we are playing good cricket at the moment...Good luck to Sri Lanka for sunday but i have to say Chris Gayle is fantastic to watch so whould be a cracker..may the best team on the day win...to my fellow SL fans, let's be sporting in our comments as we dont want to go down the route of one of the other teams in the comp with silly comments...

Remember last two t20 against India ? 120 allout or something. This tells a lot about the srilankan batsmen. Dont they?.Srilanka can't make more than 130 against this Indian bowling attack and lost both odis and t20 series in their home condition.LOL.

Now we can understand ICC groupings are correct. No tem from group 2 to final. Only minnows are there.

Good day for WI. Chances brighten for SL, especially if the match is played on pitch semi-final 1 was played on. Unless Gayle clicks again, it will be a cakewalk for SL in final. But hope it is not so one-sided as this one was

WE NEED SHOW LIKE WI IN T20 CRICKET NOT LIKE THAT OF IND,PAK,AUS.. WI HAVE CLASS & MAINLY ATTITUDE IN THE FIELD..AS ALWAYS WI ROCK...READY FOR ANOTHER G A N G N A M STYLE from C H R I S !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 17:24 GMT)

Johnson Charles should be out of the finals, replaced with Llendl Simmons. He does not have the openers temperament for T20. He puts too much pressure on Chris Gayle. This should not be permanent, he is a good player, but his inexperience is showing and people are capitalizing on it.

Posted by rbhimal on (October 5, 2012, 17:23 GMT)

SL must be very happy. i think the last time WI beat them in any limited over competition was probably 1976. Still, for once, WI played to their full potential for a most deserved win. Deeply satisfying to us long-suffering fans. if only Sammy could retire we might be a step closer to a world-beating side.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 17:23 GMT)

I think most Lankan fans pointing that Indian team was weaker have forgotten the absolute thrashing they received from hands of India a couple of months back that too in their own back yard :)

Posted by colombo_SL on (October 5, 2012, 17:22 GMT)

It is better If indian team can get lessons from Pak, WI & SL to beat Australia. India make Aus as a tough team & blame on rain & grouping of the teams. But the truth is indian bowlers are not performing well now to claim for this WC.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 17:22 GMT)

@Mohammad Bilal Rasiq Dhoni was just making excuses because he failed to deliver.nothing else.on Pak SL match we all know what kind of pitch that was but hafeez didn't made any excuse.that's the real spirit

Well played West Indies.Treat to watch you play.@ bmike, LOL. SA thrashed srilanka in group match and didn't win a single super8 s ,So what does that tell about the finalist? Australia thrashed by Pakistan and Pakistan thrashed by India. If you lose finals, hope you don't give excuse like ball is round, bat is wooden and pitch is dust bowl.ROFL.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 17:18 GMT)

I told u Aus weren't going to win this tournament, what I forgot to tell u was that WI would be in the finals. Congrats WI. Just play your best cricket on Sunday & your fans will be happy.

Posted by rajesh_singhSTM on (October 5, 2012, 17:18 GMT)

Serves the Australians right . They manipulated the super 8s to ensure they did not meet SL and though WI would be easy. They got pawned big time.

Posted by colombo_SL on (October 5, 2012, 17:18 GMT)

@Indian fans; See the difference how WI & Pak fought with AUS. India did bad against Aus. Its not due to the rain but due to lack of performance you are out of final.

Posted by colombo_SL on (October 5, 2012, 17:15 GMT)

I can't understand the position of so called mighty group 2. Single team couldn't make it into final. Now most of the fans should understand SL is in the final, not due to luck, but performance.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 17:15 GMT)

I have said it before. If West Indies score over 200 runs they will win. That is enough for them to give their bowlers a chance, Good call to play Badree before Edwards, but he has to focus. One of his best delivery got Watson out We need to see more of that. Ramdin was at his best behind the wicket. Good opening with the spin so good call Sammy. It was very risky to bowl Russell when there was Bravo. Russel did not play much in this competition so he was not exposed enough to be an accurate bowler. Good performace execpt that WI should not get carried away with a high score and become sloppy in the field. Bad throw ins and over throw is not good in a final. Sri Lanka will not be an easy target or push over. They won all their matches. Outstanding performance by Gayle. He can do it. He has the ability and tempermant to go all the way. Hope he recovers from his side strain and can bowl a few overs. There is enough bowlers to drop Russell and bring in Dwayne Smith as a back up batsman.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 17:13 GMT)

Great victory fellas.Australia depends too much on Watson with both bat & ball plus they peaked too early..Almost everyone turned up for the Windes tonight, just need one more big game..Big up Pollard,Bravo,Samuels,Badree,Rampaul & THE BIG MAN IN THE BUSINESS Mr CHRIS GAYLE...

Yet this is quite some achievement for a team which fielded 2 batsmen, 1 all rounder, and 3 sorry 4 bowlers oh! yea bailey makes it 3 batsmen coz of the very 29 ball 63. I wonder if this is the first time in cricketing history a team had 3/4 players just to make it an eleven.

Posted by EmeraldEye on (October 5, 2012, 17:08 GMT)

In this tournament I had the feeling that the team (Aus) that swept across all other teams in the initial stages would struggle at some point near the closing phase. Their middle order was not tested and their blowers met the real power hitters of the cricket ball only once, even the first game between them was a high scoring match. Though India is out of the tournament, they someone has the magic to perform in the big stages. Wonder what if Ind had the chance to play against SL or WI in the semi final. Well, its just a thought. But anyway, good cricket by WI, hope they bring back their old shine.

Posted by baranasai on (October 5, 2012, 17:07 GMT)

I always wanted the West indies to beat aussies but the manner they beat them with so many balls to spare is really very good. However i feel Lankans will win the finals as they are masters in their back yard and WI should do a really very best effort to win-I doubt as they may succumb under pressure from slings Mends and Sangs. I hope it will be a good battle than a one sided affair/atleast let chris score some useful runs

What a pathetic display. Aus saw a big total and just folded. Turned tail and ran. That's what happens with bullies - faced with a tough ask they roll over! The flat-track boys, Watson and Warner, didn't have a clue, and and showed that form is truly temporary. The Aus middle order proved to be weak and fragile, and only Bailey had the courage to stand up and fight! Outplayed and outclassed, Aus go home with their tails between their legs.

Posted by lankavigi on (October 5, 2012, 17:03 GMT)

Big win for the West Indies!!!!! It also helps world cricket too, to see the former legends of cricket fire again. Australia, the current legends were really poor, and looked like they didn't deserve to be here. Their bowling attack was far to inexperienced to hold Gayle and co . Apart from Hogg, their spinners were poor. Australia didn't look like the dominant side they were once before. Unfortunately, their star performer Watson had an off day, which made things worse!!! It may be a bit emotional, but I do favour SL to hoist the cup on Sunday. They have a different bowling attack to Australia and have much more experienced men in their team line-up. WI hammered Australia in the group stages and did the same today. They failed to do anything to SL in the super eights. They may be bette placed this time around, but will fall short to SL. Home conditions and support, experience and an in-form SL will topple WI on Sunday!!!

Posted by andrew27994 on (October 5, 2012, 17:03 GMT)

Congratulations West Indies for making it into the finals. I have no doubts that you will win the finals for sure and that's mainly because I noticed how united the team now looks. They are enjoying every moment of brilliance out there. Their dancing is brilliant too so momentum is with the West Indies. Sri Lanka's best chance of winning the finals will depend on the performance of their spinners.

Somehow I beg to differ from those who think that batting 1st would be the preferrable option in the finals as the pressure of getting a big total could prove too much for either teams. West Indies, especially, would struggle with that task, considering the quality of Sri Lanka's spinners.

Posted by keecha on (October 5, 2012, 17:03 GMT)

Perfect Result (for an Eng fan) - but glad to see Bailey score some runs. I tend to support the underdog and he has come in for some stick from many Aussie fans on here so well done him, but it was all too much. I think it showed how Aus have relied on Watson, who has been brilliant in this tournament but when he fails to deliver..well, to borrow a phrase from someone ...'the cupboard is bare'

Posted by George_cricket on (October 5, 2012, 16:49 GMT)

Massive win for WI...Cricket needs WI and I hope this is just a begining and they start performing in all forms of the game. Definitely a much better improved side in the world. India should learn from this.

Posted by Dreadnaughty on (October 5, 2012, 16:48 GMT)

That was brutal, especially after the way Australia dominated the earlier part of the tournament.

I wonder how much the defeat to Pakistan shook their confidence in the batting lne up after Warner and Watson.

Posted by ScottStevo on (October 5, 2012, 16:47 GMT)

Disastrous night for Australia - completely destroyed...Some pretty ordinary bowling in the last 10 after a very solid start - and bowling Doherty for the last over will (or at least should be) Bailey's worst and last mistake as captain of Australia. That last over completely took any chance of winning that match away...Although, gotta give Bailey some credit for his very good knock, showed a lot of ticker and if any of the middle order had've bothered to stick around instead of trying too hard, they might just've been able to put a little bit of panic back into the WI team. Was definitely Windies night and certainly not the Aussies. HOpe they can go on and win it now...good luck WI!

NO surprises that Aus were losing wickets rapidly, it's always difficult coming in to bat needing 10 an over. Feel sorry for D Huss too, being left out for the tourny and then asked to contain Gayle and chase 200 from 40-4! No chance! Oh well, Aus did better than most expected, including me...

Posted by mrmonty on (October 5, 2012, 16:45 GMT)

Australia had no business being in the Semis. Would have been exposed much earlier than the Pak game, had rain not made matters worse for Indian spinners. WI has a real chance of winning this thing now. They have spinners to match and neutralize SL.

We should never rely on other team's performance to qualify. Yes Aussies did get lucky that day but I dont know how we could have defended 140. Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 15:56 GMT)

"Sri Lanka and West Indies are in the easy super 8s group" they said. " Other group had the best 4 teams" they said. " None of the "BEST" teams from India/South Africa/Australia/Pakistan would reach the final," THEY NEVER SAID!

Posted by ibbani on (October 5, 2012, 15:56 GMT)

hahahahaahahahahah AUS - can you reach 75 please, That's Gayle's individual score and not your target to win !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Superstar_Salman_Khan on (October 5, 2012, 15:54 GMT)

I would like to make a point or two. It is an open secret that Aus batsmen are simply pathetic against spinners. Pakistan exposed them earlier and WI doing the same now. When MSD said it was due to rain that his bowlers were unable to grip ball properly against Aus, I thought he was making excuses but now I really think, Australia were really lucky that day. (Mind You ! I'm NOT an Indian fan.) Aus don't deserve to be in Semi-Finals.

Posted by bouncedout on (October 5, 2012, 15:53 GMT)

Nothing fills my heart with joy like the Aussies getting thrashed.

Lucky to get to the semis they are now being exposed for the average team they are. If Watson doesn't score runs AND take wickets they have no one else to turn to.

The Husseys are both past it and I am reallly looking forward to the next Ashes when it looks like Aus will have not one but two 38 year olds in their batting line up...you couldn't make it up

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 15:52 GMT)

Aussies got lucky in their match against India when it rained mildly in 18th over when India was batting and then rained again when they started their innings, it made life difficult for Indian spinners and they got thrashed out of the park, had it not rained Aussies would have struggled against a confident spin attack.

The way they played Pakistan, they didnt deserve to be in the semis, Ranked #9 in T20 and were being powered forward by Watson who is a top player, but too many tourists in the Aussie squad and eventually when Watson fails they collapse like a pack of cards. Hussey looks past his prime and his struggled innings against Pakistan showed that his dept was being tested.

WI, SL, Pak and India deserved to be in semis and finals with either of these 4 winning depending on individual performances.

Posted by kickassPakistan on (October 5, 2012, 15:49 GMT)

i would like to play nostrodomus, final will be won by the team batting first and the team winning the toss will bat first therefore the team winning the toss will win the match.never before the odds have been so equal.it would be the spin of the coin and not cricketing skills that would be the ultimate champion.SAD BUT TRUE

Posted by ddlj26 on (October 5, 2012, 15:49 GMT)

W.I. Ripping australia left right and center... this is an embarassment in all true terms..... People were australia and Pakistan deserved to be in the semis from the group of death... looking at yesterday's and today's performance, I am sure India and SA would not fared this horribly.... Anyways go on to win this cup .. all the best from an Indian !!!

Posted by Prem_Ausie on (October 5, 2012, 15:33 GMT)

@NP_NY, what nonsense are you talking about ..Can't you see the mass crowd at Premadasa..(Don't waste others valuable time…) I can see the large crowd really enjoying this good piece of cricket..Well done WI !…hoping to see a great come back from Ausie as well…

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 15:33 GMT)

Congrats to SL for winning this year's Wt20 cup.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 15:31 GMT)

Lucky Australia ! Gayle didn't face as many deliveries as he should have in the beginning. Well it's not a surprise now, why Caribbean players are HOT PROPERTIES in IPL.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 15:29 GMT)

It seems no one from the group of death (India out in super eights, Pakistan and Aus out in semis) will make to the finals

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 15:29 GMT)

Lucky Australia !

Gayle didn't face as many deliveries as he should have in the beginning.

Posted by R_U_4_REAL_NICK on (October 5, 2012, 15:29 GMT)

WI batsmen have delivered big time! Australia didn't pick McKay, and it was only a matter of time before the likes of Doherty were shown up again. Hogg and Cummins bowled O.K. but just haven't had the best of tournaments... Now for the chase!

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 15:28 GMT)

tHE pLAN WORKED OUT WELL.eVERY OTHER wEST iNDIAN bATSMEN pLAYED AROUND gAYLE. wE SHOULD ALSO DO THE SAME WITH sEHWAG

Posted by dw10 on (October 5, 2012, 15:27 GMT)

206 is a tall score to chase. It's shaping out to be a SL vs WI final, the two romantics in world cricket!... The two sides every neutral love to support.... what a perfect world cup!... Great organizing

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 15:26 GMT)

I guess if you are going to get bundled out of a world cup you'd might as well go out to innings like that. That Gayle is a monster! I honestly believe that world cricket is benefits with a competitive Windies team. I hope they can take this form into the longer forms of the game.

Posted by StatisticsRocks on (October 5, 2012, 15:25 GMT)

Absolute carnage...Way to Go WI..Australia hit by GAYLE storm..I hope this is enough to send the Aussies packing. Good to see WI cricket back. @NP_NY..Spot on.. @Herath-UK...yes, SL is a beautiful and colorful country and the fans are great and it's absolutely electric but the stadiums are empty for matches not featuring SL. This was the case for SLPL as well.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 15:23 GMT)

Tomorrow's headline, Aussies blown away by Gayle force. 205 is an impossible score to chase. As far as Aussies are concerned, 112 runs could have been a decent target for them. Go Windies Go.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 15:20 GMT)

Chris Gayle is a rock star. What a performance. It may be the end of the road for the Aussies..but it's a funny game - perhaps Watto / Warner can pull off another humdinger. I personally think Windies vs. Sri Lanka would be a much more exciting final. All the best to both sets of fans! Spare a thought for this Saffa :)

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 15:20 GMT)

Things are going just as predicted, Windies are going to Final to blow away another overhyped team, roaring meows, haha.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 15:17 GMT)

Oh my.windies has given a huge challenge to aussies.i wonder can warner and watson make 206 alone? i believe huss has to make a good contribution.should be an exciting one.

Posted by passionatecricbug on (October 5, 2012, 15:17 GMT)

oh yeah thats right.....gangam style !

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 15:17 GMT)

it will be a Sri Lanka West Indies final, today is payback time for the Australians.

Posted by AKA123 on (October 5, 2012, 15:17 GMT)

This time it's West Indies Champion for sure... they will crush Australia and Sri Lanka is just minnows to them..... only WI deserve this cup!!

Posted by ibbani on (October 5, 2012, 15:15 GMT)

I am sorry thats how Gayle plays. Srilankan fans already have a loosemotion feeling. Beware guys another Indian team is there to beat you.

Posted by thegoodgame on (October 5, 2012, 15:13 GMT)

Awesome Windies! wooo hoooo! what a batting display - true entertainment! Backing Windies to lift the cup - and hoping its the return of the greatest cricketers ever!

Posted by binojpeter on (October 5, 2012, 15:12 GMT)

It is one of the worst planning I have seen by George Bailey not to bowl his spinners' quota in the middle overs and finish off with his seamers. I don't why Daniel Christian did not play. There was no need for that much number of spinners. For that matter, I wonder why George Bailey is in the team. He does not seem to contribute anything to team other than captaining which also he has done worse in this match. Watson should have been captain in my opinion.

Posted by miltonabdh on (October 5, 2012, 14:54 GMT)

WI is going to win the Semi Final and is favourite for the Final. Greatest Batsman of T20: Chris Gayle; Greatest Batsman of ODI: Sachin Tendulkar; Greatest Batsman of Test: Sir Don Bradman.

Posted by VivGilchrist on (October 5, 2012, 14:47 GMT)

If Bailey is chosen purely as a specialist captain, why did he give the ball to D.Hussey to bowl to Gayle in the 15th over? Aussies better go hard from the start - this could be a big total.

Posted by BRUTALANALYST on (October 5, 2012, 14:47 GMT)

@Abhinav Tiwary It's ridiculous someone as experienced and talented as Smith is not playing only W.I would experiment with an inexperienced youngster opening in a World Cup - the same thing happened to Xavier Marshall Barath Andre Fletcher W.I throw youngsters in at deepend then discard whilst experienced talented older player sat on bench they don't get it.

Dangerous gayle is my Fav

Posted by Inumlakhan on (October 5, 2012, 14:12 GMT)

Who is your Fav in the Playing 11 of WI.

Posted by Herath-UK on (October 5, 2012, 14:10 GMT)

I'm amazed with the superb organisation of the tounament with mass local crowd support;Nasser Hussain went on commenting on sky that he had not heard such buzz, enthusiasm and noise anywhere in the world including India.Well done SLC. Ranil Herath - Kent

Posted by Herath-UK on (October 5, 2012, 14:06 GMT)

I would like to see a Sri Lanka Australia final,no discredit to WI.Sri Lankan crowd will be keen to avenge the defeat by the Aussies in 2007. Ranil Herath - Kent

@NP_YP, u r right....

Posted by Shouldas-Wouldas-Couldas on (October 5, 2012, 14:03 GMT)

Another 22 yards of "Premadasa SANDY BEACH" at Colombo ! Australia is DOOMED - chance evaporated with COIN !!!!!!

Posted by NP_NY on (October 5, 2012, 13:37 GMT)

Amazing how few people showed up to the stadium for the WI-Aus semifinal. This is why Srilankan cricket is in trouble and will continue to be in trouble. It seems the SL fans are only interested in the success of their team and not the cricket itself. If this were a semifinal in India the stadium will be atlest 3/4 full. No wonder SL cricketers want to play in the IPL more than their national team.

Posted by Dark.Matter on (October 5, 2012, 13:31 GMT)

GO windies GO. make the finals.

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 13:27 GMT)

I don't understand why Dwayne Smith is not playing, i mean do you want a bowler like Andre Russel to play as a batsman? But there can be better matches to do experiments why today?

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 13:18 GMT)

Really sensible decision to bring in D Hussey for Maxwell, who is just another cousin of Sir Ravindra Jadeja. Hoping for a tight contest. Prediction :- WI going into the finals !

Posted by   on (October 5, 2012, 13:17 GMT)

GO ON WETS INDIES. GAYLE START THE GAYLE SIX MACHINE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. BEAT THE AUSTRALIANS ..........

Daniel BrettigClose
Daniel Brettig Assistant editor Daniel Brettig had been a journalist for eight years when he joined ESPNcricinfo, but his fascination with cricket dates back to the early 1990s, when his dad helped him sneak into the family lounge room to watch the end of day-night World Series matches well past bedtime. Unapologetically passionate about indie music and the South Australian Redbacks, Daniel's chief cricketing achievement was to dismiss Wisden Almanack editor Lawrence Booth in the 2010 Ashes press match in Perth - a rare Australian victory that summer.
