Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal have long been mainstays of Bangladesh's batting, but Tamim has usually been in charge of providing the momentum at the top with Shakib finishing things from No. 5.

In the T20s, though, with Shakib having been bumped up to No. 3, the pair will be in charge of providing a good start. While the move potentially gives two of Bangladesh's best batsmen more time in the middle, the team will have plenty to worry about if they are both dismissed early. That, though, has happened only once in seven matches in the last three months - against Ireland.

Shakib has so far batted at his new position in six T20Is and once during the unofficial matches in Port-of-Spain, and said on Friday that he's comfortable in the new role. "If I bat in the top order, I will get more chances to score runs and more chances to face balls. I am looking forward to batting at No. 3," he said in Colombo.

Though his average is 17.71 in the seven innings batting at No. 3, he has just about done the job expected of him in several of those games - either by batting past the halfway stage to leave the team in a decent position or by staying till the end in chases.

Shakib said one of the keys to Bangladesh's success will be temperament. "There'll be some tough situations but we know how to handle it," he said. "The boys have been playing cricket constantly for a year so they'll understand how to handle the pressure and if we can do this, we'll win the matches."

Bangladesh have a mediocre record in World Twenty20s so far, but will be boosted by Tamim's resurgence as a Twenty20 opener, which has come about after he began properly understanding what his role is. A good run of recent form has seen him make his three highest Twenty20 scores in his previous four innings.

"I have been playing quite a few T20s recently, around 15-20 in the last month or so," Tamim said. "I think I am in very good shape, I understand the game better than before. I hope I can carry it into the World T20 and perform well.

"Earlier I was struggling to pace my innings. I used to attack from ball one. Now I think I am batting more cleverly - attacking as well as picking up the singles. That's how you should bat in T20s."

Bangladesh step up their preparations with a practice match against Zimbabwe on Saturday and are expected to play their best XI leading up to their first match in the tournament proper against New Zealand on September 21.

@Ahmed Hussain...I am not saying afridi is better than shakib or shakib is better than afridi but the fact is afridi is in ICC odi team of the year and now plz don't tell me YOU know better than ICC...you r ryt afridi is now more of a bowler i m pakistani but still i think currently Kallis is the best all rounder in world cricket and after i'll rate Yuvi and then afridi...Shakib no doubt is a world class player but he still have a long way to go may be after 4 5 years when afridi kallis and yuvi retires we can say that he's the best all rounder in the world but not now.

Posted by   on (September 17, 2012, 16:50 GMT)

@Faizan Feroz...Have you seen the warm-up matches of Afridi and Shakib today? incomparable Shakib is the best all-rounder in the world :P

Posted by ExtremeSpeed on (September 16, 2012, 18:14 GMT)

The long term number 3 prospect of Bangladesh's Cricket is the highest run getter at the recent Under-19 World Cup whose name is ANAMUL HAQUE.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 17:59 GMT)

@Faizan Feroz...loool bit premature of you predicting results like that aren't you? yes you may be right but what if you're wrong? because if these results did turn out to be wrong, maybe I might remind you with the link so you can eat your own words. Actually the young Shakib has a better bowling and batting average than Afridi in all forms did you know that? oh wait I forgot man Afridi doesn't play Tests so yeah Shakib is better than Afridi infact Afridi is not really an all-rounder looks more like a bowler to me who can bat like 1 per 20 innings or so lol but its not us that say Shakib is the best all-rounder the world rather its the ICC player rankings that rate Shakib as the best Test and ODI all-rounder in the world and don't tell me you know better than the ICC? have a nice day :)"

Guys , its been really tough for Bangladesh for these early years but not now. Bangladesh is quite capable of beating any team in T20 & ODI. SO don't throw your words with your imaginations. Its true and will be proved. Insahallah. Don't let your hope be gone. We are not weak team any more. We have beaten India, Srilanka in the Asia cup. How we did that, people know.

Speacially @@@@@@@@@Faizan Feroz, mind your language. Sakib is not only BEST ALLROUNDER IN ASIA BUT ALSO IN THIS WORLD. EVEN THOUGH HIS COMPETITOR HAS BEEN PLAYING HUGE NUMBER OF MATCH'S, HE IS ABLE TO KEEP THE RECORD FOR ONE YEAR LAST LONG. If he gets the chance to play more match's then you can't imagine his rating points. Nobody could reach him...........

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 16:37 GMT)

Faizan Feroz@ m frm india...and m indian supporter! ur so called lala is so overrated!! bd cricket is improving..slowly bt they improving. 1day they will b 1 of d strong team..and when shakib will hang his boots, his record will b btr than ur afridi..mark my word.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 14:46 GMT)

u still believe that u can pull this one ?? yeah ryt like every world cup u boast like tigers and then turn into pussy cats on the ground, apurba yeah shakib is at the moment is btr than afridi BUT the reasong for it being NO AFDIDI as simple as that :P :P 777aditya yeah son live ur dream its not gonna last long :P as usual bengalis will be left out in the 1st stage , ist match they will lose second pak will win and then third shakib back bengladesh so long being the BEST ALL ROUNDER IN ASIA . the two best are none other than yuvi and afridi cox they win matches and world cups nt just hopes ! cheers

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 13:29 GMT)

Shakib should in the ICC ODI team. its realy shame that he is not in the icc odi team. he is a world class allrounder..at the moment he is btr than Afridi.

Posted by 777aditya on (September 16, 2012, 12:26 GMT)

Shakib is easily Asia's best all rounder, but an unsung hero. What Tamim did to Zaheer and inevitably India two World Cups ago is stuff bragging rights are gained of. Both obviously hold the key for Bangladesh's success. The whole team is so talented that they are dark horses to win this T20 WC. Enterprising batting and inspired fielding are Bangladesh's assets. In bowling, spin department is pretty good. Somehow, if the fast bowlers too can come good, watch out everyone - this team means business!

Posted by Deadwood on (September 16, 2012, 11:31 GMT)

@Jindal, Ash the most dependable?? no bro he is doing good but he is not in the top 3 batsman's. Riyad, Mushy and Nasir are currently better in t20 too.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 9:51 GMT)

TBH, I'm not in favor of this step. Tamim, Shakib and Ashraful are most dependable batsmen of BD. It's okay if Tamim and Ashra open. But BD really need a sensible good hitter in middle order. Mushfiqar can't be trusted really ! To me, Shakib's best position to bat should be No. 5 ! And it's really good for BD that Ahraful is back ! His experience will come into play. Good luck to BD. They can beat NZ.

Posted by bored_iam on (September 16, 2012, 7:14 GMT)

The only two cricketers who can get BD anywhere: Shakib & Tamim. A lot depends on them. Along with Mohammad Rafique, easily their best players of all time.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 0:16 GMT)

i am saying to those people who think that BD cric team is still underdog...that its time to show the triumph of the real tigers. dont underestimate BD cric so much man...i believe u guys got the taste of loosing by BD cric at least once in your life.....so its all. Just wait and see what BD cric does in this tournament...best of luck BD Cric team.

I am an Indian supporter BUT I wish good luck to Bangladesh team. I think the time has come for Bangladesh to leave behind their "small" team tag and win over the big boys of world cricket. I will be pleasantly pleased to see Bangladesh in the semi finals. In Asian conditions, they are definitely a dangerous team. So many talented young players with plenty of T20 experience will put them in a hopeful position. Good luck and God bless.

Posted by gyusuf6 on (September 15, 2012, 18:46 GMT)

@biggus, I agree. @Rajavel-Cricket, Bud i will remember you if Bangladesh goes through until then you can say anything you want. Be respectful to others.

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 18:09 GMT)

@ asiacricket1234 i think it is a good idea to bring your best batsman earlier there is no point leaving it too late for him to do some thing and losing wicket is not an issue anymore we have some reliable players beside Sakib and Tamim,

Posted by Extraz on (September 15, 2012, 17:12 GMT)

If BD beat New zealand then we definitely will make sure that you guys goes to the next round by beating New zealand.Best of luck BD from PAK.

Posted by komui on (September 15, 2012, 16:24 GMT)

if bd can show the same body language and the desire to win, that they showed during the Asia cup then they might make for a good show.but for me expecting the same old bd tumbling down like a rock in the wt20 cup.

Posted by xylo on (September 15, 2012, 16:23 GMT)

When you say, "That, though, has happened only once in seven matches in the last three months ", it might do justice to name the teams that played against them. IMHO, Shakib's position should not be fixed.

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 15:00 GMT)

tamim is the greatest opener ever cricket history in Bangladesh, what ever, sakib, asraful, mushfikur, nasir are more talent player.....

@veerakannadiga - lool Yes Afghanistan and Ireland are better teams than Bangladesh even though Bangladesh beat Ireland and Afghanistan recently you okay though bro? Yes Afghanistan beat India, England etc as well I assume? :D

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 12:55 GMT)

Great to have zia at low order where we can see some big shot. InsaAllah we will pass group stage

Posted by Third_Gear on (September 15, 2012, 12:50 GMT)

veerakannadiga@ According to your statement AFG,IRE is better than BD, but BD is always wiinner against IND that means INDIA is worse team than IRE and Afghanistan.Cheerssssss. Thats correct. One team without genuine fast bowler, proper bowling lineup and awful fielding performances, How much could we rate INDIA? Ofcourse need to be below IRE and AFG.

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 12:32 GMT)

Tamim.Ash.Sakib.Ziaur & rest of all...This is the best Bangladesh T20 team ever..

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 11:40 GMT)

bala sachin. bangladesh won convincingly against india where 'sachin' selfishly made a century and lost. also the fact BD won against india in last T20 tournament. so...u can discuss, how sachin makes century and loses some other day.

sakib is my fav !!! make pak or newzeland out from compitation !!!

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 9:59 GMT)

just hope dat tamim does not fall off early.. if he dosent bd are caplable of nytin.. but if he falls off early bd might just struggle to lift up the game..

Posted by mahafuz1983 on (September 15, 2012, 9:26 GMT)

@Sourove Sheikh......why bother???....fact is a fact.....and the fact is as u said BD 3-0 Ireland...and just beat Afgans few days ago......@bala_sachin.....nobody asked u to discuss.....nice victory over Zim....good luck Zim in the tournament....u have a fighting team with fighting spirit......sunny too expensive for 1 wicket....again Zia or Nasir didn't ball.....unhappy that shafiul bowled only 1 over.....if he is to play, then should have been given more overs for confidence boost....after all it was a practice match.....still gonna say a batsman short.....drop either shafiul or sunny and get in junaid, jahirul or reza......good victory by india and aus.....impressed by the afgans....there were some really good players in srilanka A....this is heating up really good....wanna competitive tournament with lots of close exciting matches...not an one-sided one

Posted by bala_sachin on (September 15, 2012, 8:57 GMT)

why to discuss abt the team which returrns in first round

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 8:30 GMT)

one sayed afganistan & ireland is better than bd.how can he tell that?bangladesh whitewashed ireland recently and also beat afganistan a few days ago.and bangladesh can beat any team any time.

@veerakannadiga: Thanks for come across to BD page, at least boys did something!!

Afghanistan & Ireland are better teams than BD.

Posted by Third_Gear on (September 15, 2012, 7:27 GMT)

Rajavel-cricket@ The most over rated team India is lucky enough not to face Bangladesh at the group stage otherwise they had to leave colombo with bag and baggage simply after first round. Check Stat.

Posted by M_Rakibul_Islam on (September 15, 2012, 6:29 GMT)

Shakib should bat at no.4 position in all 3 formats. He's the 2nd best batsman for BD after Tamim. But BD middle-order is weak. So he should stay at middle order. If he bats at no.4 position, he'll face more balls & opportunities too. No.5 position is little-bit late & no.3 position is too early.

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 5:13 GMT)

Shakib, the General of the pack and Tamim, the leader of the cavalry will ignite the incursion when Ashraful relinquishes. That is when the adversaries would savor the tigers' wrath...! Good Luck wounded warriors. Want them to seek retribution against Pakistan...

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 3:21 GMT)

all the best to bangladesh from an indian fan... would be glad to see them qualify for the 2nd round .. shakib is my fav. international cricketer apart from lee and kevin.. i have even selected shakib in my fantasy world xi.. hope he proves to be useful again..

Posted by nthuq on (September 15, 2012, 2:59 GMT)

I've always advocated Shakib playing at No. 3 in all formats. He is definitely our most consistent batsman, with the only thing that he might be lacking is conversion rate of 50s to 100s in ODIs and Tests. Only 5 centuries in 30 50+ innings is just not good enough (tests). Though when Anamul does come in, depending on how well he does at the international level, we'll see. If he can pull off his conversion rate of 5 centuries in 10 50+ innings in first class, he'll definitely be a top batsman. Can't wait until Bangladesh gets to their next test series, whenever that is.

Posted by mahafuz1983 on (September 15, 2012, 2:48 GMT)

@SylhetiBangladeshiCricketExpert4u......agree with u.....nazmul would have been a better choice......following Abul Hasan since BPL......too much short wide delivery.....I guess if Rubel Hossain was fit.....would have been the perfect squad....nevermind....shakib at no 3 is a good idea....ur best players should be up front in limited over cricket.....I still believe we r a batsman short.....should not play both razzak and sunny together.....should include junaid o anyothe batsman or allrounder reza considering the wicket is a seaming one.....if mortoza, safiul, shakib, razzak/sunny bowls their full overs we need only 4 overs from mahmudullah, nasir, zia and reza.....i don't know what u other guys think but we r a batsman short for sure...good luck tigers.....and good luck pakistan, india and srilanka......let the subcontinent teams shine in the tournament

Posted by Biggus on (September 15, 2012, 2:05 GMT)

It only stands to reason that if you're not getting full value from his batting he should move up the order. Good luck to him, this competition could go to any side given the volatility of the format.

Posted by Rajavel-cricket on (September 15, 2012, 0:37 GMT)

Like over rated bangladesh team their fans also over excited,, Sorry bangla fans your tean not gonna cross first round in world T-20, mark my words.

Posted by fr600 on (September 14, 2012, 22:53 GMT)

Good decision, especially with Mushfiqur, Ziaur, Mahmudullah, Mortaza, Nasir down the order.

Posted by Masking_Tape on (September 14, 2012, 22:28 GMT)

New role? I thought he always batted @ 3 in T20s for Bangladesh.

Posted by Tokai69 on (September 14, 2012, 21:43 GMT)

Time for team BD to get success in an international tournament to shut the haters up. Hope they will come out of that barrier this time ......... Go Shakib ! All the best!!

Posted by   on (September 14, 2012, 21:34 GMT)

its a spot on decision !!! U should play your best batsman upfront rather paying down the order . Although there is a huge risk where if Shakib & Tamim falls early but still is a brave thinking . If u want gain something special u got got to take the calculative risk . My personal opinion, Zia is the key player for Bangladesh if they want make some impact by beating the top ranked country's . Best of luck my Dream boys. 15,000,0000fans r with u.

Posted by SylhetiBangladeshiCricketExpert4u on (September 14, 2012, 21:33 GMT)

This Squad Of Bangladesh Is The BEST Selection Ever in BD Cricket History...So They Should Definitely Eliminate Pakistan/Newzealand and Should Look to Move into the Semifinal...But If They Cant Do That Then Well Players Have to Be Blamed for That....To me Out of 15 Man 14 are Perfect and The Best Selection But for Only 1 The Sylheti Pacer Abul Hasan is not at all gud selection Instead It Should Have Been the Experienced Sylheti Pacer Nazmul Hossain...Selectors Missed a Trick There.

Posted by   on (September 14, 2012, 21:16 GMT)

Also I just want to add that batting is very important especially at that Stadium because a score of 150 is about par so Bangladesh need to be careful how they bat go for less dot balls, pick up 1s and 2s and find those boundaries and go for 6s unless its a bad ball or free hit towards the last 8 or so overs. The key player Bangladesh need to be careful of New Zealand is clearly Jacob Oram after his SLPL success.

Posted by Bangladesh5 on (September 14, 2012, 20:52 GMT)

Your best batsman comes in at #3. So whose our batsman? That's right it's Shakib. He's our best match winner alongsides Tamim and Ash which is why these 3 need to bat in the top 3. In T20's, starts are key to big scores which is why you need your match winners at the top. Shakib has been batting way too low over the years. It's refreshing to see coach Pybus doing something about this. Also the likes of Mushy, Riyad and Nasir have proven that they can hold their own in the middle as well and then we have Zia whose a bit of a wild card but has shown he can really smash the ball once it gets in to his zone. Overall we have the pieces to a good batting lineup. It's just the matter of clicking at the right moments.

Posted by FOTO on (September 14, 2012, 20:23 GMT)

I think Shakib might handle it. He did play a very impressive score for Kolkata of near about 50. And he was in at No.3. If Tamim gets out early (cause he isn't good against off-spin) against Pakistan... Then Shakib and Ashraful will take over and has to make it to around 7 overs more with that happening.

Posted by Shipluchy on (September 14, 2012, 20:16 GMT)

BEST WISHES TO OUR TIGERS, SPECIALLY TO SHAKIB AND TAMIM

Posted by Forgettable on (September 14, 2012, 20:09 GMT)

It depends on the situation. I think if an early wicket fell but the run rate is quite higher like say 40 in 4 overs. In this situation we need to send Nasir cuz Shakib is an attacking player so we need him at last for big hits. I think ideal position for him should be no.4 GL BD team

Posted by   on (September 14, 2012, 20:06 GMT)

good luck but it looks to risky

Posted by asiacricket1234 on (September 14, 2012, 19:49 GMT)

I think its too risky for Bangladesh. If they lose Shakib and Tamim at the begging of the match as it says in this article they'll be in big trouble. Mushfiq was the right choice for that position tbh

Posted by MunafAhmed811 on (September 14, 2012, 19:04 GMT)

Shakib and Asfraful will be very hot for Pakistan and NZ to handle. BD will surely eliminate one of them for sure, the one with weakness against spin.

Posted by   on (September 14, 2012, 18:57 GMT)

Best wishes to Bangladesh cricket team.:)

This is the perfect time for Bangladesh to show to the world that they're no underdogs anymore and very important Bangladesh beat New Zealand otherwise extreme pressure will catch up with them and may not make it to round 2 best of luck!

Musfiq should come at no.3

Posted by British_North_America on (September 14, 2012, 17:40 GMT)

Good luck Bangladesh Cricket Team

Posted by   on (September 14, 2012, 17:26 GMT)

To be honest, Shakib at 3 is not really a good idea in whatever format because like this article mentions, his batting record at that position is not that good. 4 or 5 position is the ideal position for him but lets see if batting at 3 does work come the tournament. No doubt the potential full time number 3 is going to be Anamul Haque and I will strongly advise the management to pick him for the West Indies series at least for the ODIs. Tamim Iqbal is starting to be a bit more mature now which is great to see because everyone knows he's very talented. As for their matches in Pallekele, I think its best to go for 3 full seamers and 2 full spinners because its getting quite obvious now that the pitch at Pallekele is fast and bouncy so I'd consider using Farhad in the coming matches now for Sunny in my view.

Posted by   on (September 14, 2012, 17:16 GMT)

Ashraful , Shakib, Tamim together are strengthening the first 3 positions........ The finisher is now Nasir Hossain, and i am actually waiting to see some Zia ur Rahman Magic......... i think our middle order is the real shaky which consists of Mushfik and Mahmudullah......... Fast bowling is also not very good.......but on these picthes Mashrafe will be playing wicket taker's role........

Posted by   on (September 14, 2012, 17:13 GMT)

My dear Shakib, what ever you do, what you have done, what will you do,we all Bangladeshi are proud of you,,,,,,
