Five-bowler plan leaves Dhoni facing big call

MS Dhoni is known for his instinctive decisions as a captain. Will he make the hard one on Sehwag's selection?

For all his famous instinctive calls during games, MS Dhoni has hardly ever taken a bold decision as far as selecting the India XI is concerned. He took the enormous risk of promoting himself up the order during a World Cup final - and backed it with a match-winning knock - but he didn't even tinker with the batting order, forget changing personnel, during the eight consecutive losses in overseas Tests against England and Australia. Any change then would have involved taking calls on senior batsmen who, barring Rahul Dravid in England, had not been making big scores. Dhoni's statement today that India will most likely play five bowlers against Australia will force him to take such a decision tomorrow - leaving a senior batsman out of the XI.

"It is most likely that we will play with five bowlers but what the combination will be... we will see the wicket and it will depend on that as well," Dhoni said. "It will be a fresh wicket. We will see after the press conference and how it looks tomorrow before the match."

If Dhoni does go in with five bowlers, Virender Sehwag could be the man most likely to sit out. India played five bowlers against England in the group stage, resting Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and R Ashwin and opening the innings with Irfan Pathan instead in the 90-run win.

What makes Sehwag's case relatively weak is that he adds value only with the bat, and even that has diminished drastically in recent times. He's bowled only once in a Twenty20 international and he is the only batsman in the side who has to be hidden on the field. All the India middle-order batsmen give Dhoni bowling options and are sharp fielders. While the other opener Gautam Gambhir does not bowl and is not spectacular on the field, he is nowhere close to being a liability on it. As a captain, Dhoni is known to be not comfortable with players who are one-dimensional, unless they are exceptional.

Sehwag has built a career out of being an exceptional hitter. He has always been allowed to bat the way he does irrespective of the match situation or team requirement, with the belief that on his day, he can be an incomparable match-winner. Those days have become rarer and rarer. His fitness has been dodgy, and he has played only 13 ODIs since the 2011 World Cup, with only two innings of note - the double-century against West Indies in Indore and a 96 against Sri Lanka in Hambantota.

It is the kind of call Dhoni has almost never made, apart from the time when he rotated three senior openers - Sehwag, Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar - during the ODI tri-series in Australia earlier this year to give his young middle-order batsmen more chances. As Dhoni said today, without naming anyone, if he does leave a senior batsman out, it will be a very difficult decision for him.

"I think it will be one of the toughest decisions that I have taken so far," Dhoni said. "But we will have to see what fits the combination the best and we will have to wait and watch. It has to be a good decision because that is what really matters."

Dhoni is a pragmatic captain. He likes to do things he is comfortable with, and likes to do them repeatedly. Even if he takes risks, they are calculated and rarely leaps of faith. He is comfortable with four specialist bowlers in the side. That is why he has said he missed Yuvraj Singh's bowling so much while the latter was out of the side undergoing treatment for cancer. It seems he is preparing to step out of his comfort zone by saying he will play five bowlers against Australia, even more so, as the decision involves leaving out a senior batsman.

Sehwag was one of the last to pad up for the nets today. Before that, while Ashok Dinda was bowling to Dhoni, he joked around with the duo. The relationship, and the alleged rift, between Sehwag and Dhoni has been debated in the media in the lead-up to tomorrow's game. By Dhoni's standards - if Sehwag does not take the field tomorrow - it will be a brave and a rare decision. The question is, will he do it?

why dhoni always keeping the sehwag outside the team.first he should resign for captancy give chance to young players like kohli.he is irritating with his pyush, rohit are great players than sehwag, even though they are failing still there are in team.without sehwag i hava no intst in watching the match also

Posted by henchart on (September 29, 2012, 4:51 GMT)

Despite being annihilated by Aussies all is not lost for MSD and his men. Sehwag might be bad these days but is no worse than Rohit Sharma.Chawla should be benched and Dinda brought back against Pakistan. My hunch is India would beat Pakistan and SA will win against Aus leaving Group 2 wide open. Thanks to India's horrible NRR they would be languishing at the bottom of the table even if they beat Pakistan. The way out for cornered MSD and his men is win the remaining two matches and sneak into SF as 2 nd team from Group 2 and play the hosts .I guess it is unrealistic ,as of now.

Posted by varun012 on (September 29, 2012, 2:55 GMT)

@blueking then y not dhoni can leave the team..he 2 out of form

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 20:22 GMT)

Dhoni you could have dropped yourself, how could you even think of doing it. Sehwag could have bowled offspin.

Posted by trueanalyst on (September 28, 2012, 14:50 GMT)

@Mohan panth agree with you.Sehwag instills that fear in opposition

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 14:50 GMT)

Leaving Sehwag out of playing eleven doesn't even make a sense. If Dhoni wants something good for Team India , he should leave T20 squad.... he doesn't suit into this format of Game.... player with lowest strike rate in Indian team .... he should first check his eligibility whether he fits into team India or not ...

Posted by Blueking on (September 28, 2012, 14:01 GMT)

Not a fan of Dhoni, but really feel for the way he is being treated by fans.Being a captain of a country with population in millions and satisfying evry1 is the toughest task.Yuvi is just back and his fans wont want him dropped from starting 11.After a good bowling figure against eng ,bajji fans want him in this match.Rohit has just started building confidence and his fans wnt be happy if he is dropped. And now even b4 match started sehwag fans started hating dhoni .Cricket is a sport and nobody goes unbeaten throughout life .Watever happens or whomever plays in startin 11get behind the team and cheer for it.

its is not a good decision to left out Viru. He is a threat to other teams. Bowlers will have a tension when bowling to him.

Posted by pkhunter on (September 28, 2012, 13:46 GMT)

@nlegendbucks, sehwag has been given that kind of perpetual latitude for well over one year past his expiry date. It's time now to try younger talent.

Posted by trueanalyst on (September 28, 2012, 13:44 GMT)

Unfortunately the Captain cannot drop himself else Dhoni should have been the first one to be kicked out of the team. His strike rate of 110 in T20 is abysmal to say the least. He is the worst T20 player in this Indian Team.I dont care even if he scores 50 in 25 balls today becos his performance so far does not merit any place in the team

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 13:42 GMT)

It's really frustrating not to pick sehwag. I think, todays decision to drop out sehwag is very costly at the starting of the indian inning. Anyway good luck to Dhoni and his team.

Posted by trueanalyst on (September 28 2012, 07:45 AM GMT) it is alright to drop Sehwag and play 5 bowlers but who are the 5 bowlers?Dinda and Balaji are so profligate that Dinda conceded 20 runs in one over even in a match in which England was dismissed for 80.So what purpose is this serving?Go for Piyush Chawla if u can else stay with Sehwag.Atleast Sehwag can crack 20 from 10 balls.PSC staduim can support 3 spinners but not 3 pacers.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As expected Dhoni being a clever man chosen the team which I wanted

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 13:13 GMT)

@Sunil Chowdary. Dhoni did NOT bring in Chawla. The selectors did it. They don't even discuss with Dhoni!

Posted by nlegendbucks on (September 28, 2012, 13:12 GMT)

i guess sehwag should be given as many chances as that were given to "Nohit" , who has come good only recently, i think sehwag should play at his expense, no side in world should even try to leave sehwag out, i mean he can change the course of game himself, he is a big match player, it is like that out of 3 games in super eight if he plays in all games, then it is definite that he will come good in atleast one game and if luck provides then in two games, besides he will take space of rohit sharma who bats at 5 or 6 , the middle order is already stuffed with rainas, yuvrajs & dhonis. sehwag should be given go ahead of NOHIT.

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 13:11 GMT)

After seeing the match which is going on right now, on the same pitch, I re-iterate my earlier view -- go with 4 front line spinners. Open bowling with Ashwin!

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 12:54 GMT)

The only player who needs to be dropped or "rested" is the captain cool himself. He has lost his touch with batting and his supposedly midas touch with his captaincy. The problem is that Dhoni cleverly has never allowed another wicket keeper come close to replacing him.

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 12:45 GMT)

All is not well between Dhoni & Sehwag for sure... Sehwag was expected to take the role of Sachin as the senior statesman, but this seems unlikely now... In absence of a coach like Gary Kirsten, India is fast losing the most feared batsman by opposition worldwide. Shame on MSD for letting this happen.

Posted by TRAM on (September 28, 2012, 12:16 GMT)

Mr. Dhoni, Pak in today's (28th) match got SA bundled for 133. The reason Pak are good bowlers is because the bowlers are aggressive (especially spinners) and *the captain is aggressive* as well, taking risk and setting aggressive (attacking not defensive) field. Even Umar Gul bowled only 2 overs. You want Zaheer as strike bowler in sub-continent pitch that too in T20? Has that ever happened? On the other hand Chawla has been successful in T20 most times. Zaheer with no record of good bowling in T20 and with negative fielding and batting, is the number one candidate to be dropped from the team. My comments are only for T20.

Posted by Rajavel-cricket on (September 28, 2012, 12:13 GMT)

So, VS and Yuvi are the worst player amongst seven batsmen,, Non-sense Dhoni, His Captain career is going to be end soon.did he ever play match winning innings in T-20.. The answer is big no. Dhoni should not be in the T-20 or test team anymore.. The new selectors must take this step.. Plz save indian cricket fron selfish Dhoni

Posted by Rajavel-cricket on (September 28, 2012, 11:58 GMT)

Mark my words , if Dhoni drops sehwag or Yuvraj definitely indai gona lose the match.

Posted by surib4u on (September 28, 2012, 11:55 GMT)

I didn't agree with one of the above comments that fielding is not a matter in T20's.If you see even yesterday's game WI vs Eng, Wi won mainly because of fielding, great catch by Pollard and great save by Russel, sammy etc. Coming to selection of final XI, Sehwag should be there in final XI as there is no better opener than him.Drop either raina or play with 4 bowlers as raina is also not in his best form.

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 11:54 GMT)

All comments in favour of including Sehwag is absolutely true, if gets going. BUT HE DOESN'T"T GET GOING FOR QUITE SOME TIME. That's the problem. And we can't afford to be sentimental fools, clinging to a glorious (but rapidly vanishing) past... whether it is Sehwag, Sachin or Zak.

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 11:53 GMT)

The only person that Dhoni should drop if he plays 5 bowlers is himself

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 11:49 GMT)

Zaheer is a clear case liability. Can't bat, can't get wickets, go for runs, can't chase balls, can't throw from the deep! On this pitch I will manage with Irfan as the only pacer; and open the bowling with Irfan & Ashwin. I don't remember how Piyush had done against Aussies. Otherwise I will have him too. 4-pronged spin attack. Ashwin, Bhajji, Yuvi, & Piyush. If any of these 4 go for runs or turns out to be ineffective, I will use Rohit, Raina & Kohli, to fill the gap. Aussies will go for big hits, may get big runs, but also likely to lose most of the regular batsmen before the 16th over. We generally give around 40 + runs in the last 4 overs; which can be minimized if we get the main batsmen out before that. If Viru has to be benched for this strategy, so be it! Any way, it is high time for India to think beyond, Sachin, Sehwag & Zak. Effectively I'm suggesting the same team, we fielded against Eng, but Balaji being replaced with Ashwin. That's the only change.

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 11:37 GMT)

Dhoni is also a one-dimensional player, has he played consistently in any of the format ... other team plan for players like Sehwag but not Dhoni ... Article says Dhoni is a pragmatic captain - what was it .. is it like bringing Piyush Chawla into the team when he was never played good in any format or any tournament including IPL ... Amit Mishra should have been better than Piyush. Don't say that he performed well in the last match against Eng.

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 11:14 GMT)

I would say that every player of the Indian Cricket team is special and no one is to be 'hidden' but Dhoni go ahead do whatever is good and bring home the cup. We want WCT20 trophy... All the best Team INDIA!!

wher the gambir is nt in the picture ..who is the worst amg all . well luck was with him during IPL his consistency has never proved ..i dont think shewag , should be out of this game , he is like warner , watto , gilly , levi .who can change the game any time . rest r all noobs faith on them , even they score good . as last time happened vs pak

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 11:01 GMT)

If Dhoni wats to keep Suresh Raina (as he is a far better player in slog time)..he can keep him against Gautam Gambhir and Irfan Can continue with opening with Sehwag !!

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 10:38 GMT)

Where is the problem for Mr. Dhoni to pick 5 specialist bowlers...why he is showing that he is a 'Big Thinker' ?...Taking Irfan Pathan in the playing 11 its practically makes 5 bowlers and 7 batsman. V Sehwag, G Gambhir, V Kohli, Y Singh, R Sharma, M Dhoni, I Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, R Aswin, L Balaji and Z Khan. Is there any better solution and option for him as he is making a sense of insecurities among the players ?

Posted by Aft on (September 28, 2012, 9:44 GMT)

Shewag gives pace to the batting, which is important for 20 20 format. Shewag should play against win the match..

Posted by raghu566 on (September 28, 2012, 9:27 GMT)

Wrong picture. Dhoni is tossing, it will not be his call :P

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 9:19 GMT)

I dont think Sehwag has to be 'hidden' on the field. I think he is a better bet than Gautham.

Posted by Talhacroft on (September 28, 2012, 9:19 GMT)

sehwag did not created much impact .. india can bring good explosive opener.

Posted by satish619chandar on (September 28, 2012, 9:18 GMT)

I would pick Viru for this game. With Yuvi bowling decently, i would still go with 7+4 combo for this game. Against all other teams except for Australia and SA, i would prefer India to go with 6+5 combo. Australia and SA have the bowling attack to put brakes on Indian batting and i feel 6 batters could handle the rest of the attacks where bowling might(will) be the weaklink. Personally think Viru need to get a make over now. He is trying to be too aggressive and in turn goes as reckless with his strokeplay. Being a man with a decade of experience, he should do a far better job. And to think of the one who would miss out if we pick 5 bowlers, Viru stands the first one in line to be dropped given the value others can add to the team. Such is his form. Yet, the swashbucklers usually won't be in big form for much time.

Posted by LSmith on (September 28, 2012, 8:59 GMT)

Go ahead Dhoni! If dropping Viru do good for team, I am all for it. Infact Gambhir, Zaheer looks dull for T20 too...

Posted by Naresh28 on (September 28, 2012, 8:33 GMT)

(1) In the response to comment from Chappell - WHY IS HE NOT OZ COACH? (2) An option for Dhoni is to have a word with Shewag - its all about responsibility (3) In fact Gambhir also needs the same pep talk. We lose matches because of bad openers. (4) We cannot play with team combos now. There is no time to experiment (5) The area where we are weak at is pace bowlers. Thus change in team should be here. (6) Of the spinners all three should play and Pathan. We can give each of the part-timers one over each.

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 8:21 GMT)

Since the entire Indian cricket fans are confused along with the team, my choice of team for today's match would be bringing in Sehwag without second thought. To me both Raina and sehwag have similar caliber w.r.t batting except that Raina is a superb fielder than sehwag. But in T20's fielding is of least choice because you can hardly see batsman playing shots on the ground. If sehwag hangs around for the first 5 overs playing calmly not thinking much about the score, then team India would not be loosing more than 4 wickets till the end and the score would be easily more than 175+. Both Raina and sehwag play a very minimal role in Dhoni's mind w.r.t bowling in International T20 games as there are clever bowlers in the side with whom dhoni can negotiate with .. My suggestion is to speak with Raina, rest him for this match and to bring in Sehwag.

Posted by Ajay60996 on (September 28, 2012, 8:01 GMT)

Selection for India team - what's the fuss about. Sehwag's definitely in barring any injury forced out. Bowling deptt will be efficiently served by Zaks, Irfan, Bhajji and Ashwin with the fifth bowler quota from so many "part-timers". How can you still label Yuvi as part-timer (remember he was the man of tourney for the last ODI World Cup). Cheers!

@Pranav Desai dude Gambhir is a very good and intense player. He is also someone you count on big match situations. Remember the last year WC final ?? or the T-20 WC final in 2007 against Pakistan in South Africa ?? he was the one who played match winning knocks in these matches. I would say we fans should back him when he is struggling with his form though in the last match he played a good knock.

team combination lookin good without viru.....bhajji n ashwin can spin a web on oz batting, lets go in with five bowlers and let pathan open if he succeds it'll be good otherwise middle order can strike five bowlers it should be...

Posted by sri1ram on (September 28, 2012, 7:08 GMT)

NOPE, Sehwag should not play this game. I am an avowed Shewagologist, I love VS much more than SRT. But lets face the facts today, he has done well in 2 out of 9 of his recent games over all formats - a paltry 22%. And against Australia, as pointed out in the article, his averages are pathetic. Added to that he is a known liability on the field who needs to be covered by others! Only thing going for Sehwag is that this is a sub-continental pitch, but I think the quality of the Ozzie pacers takes away that home advantage. I am not one to say that India should copy Australia in leaving out David Hussey, their leading T20 run scorer. But for Ozzies, India needs its best team balance and VS just does not give that balance. Just for the 5% or so chance that VS *MAY* come good, the balance should not be chanced. I would not mind playing VS against England, Sri Lanka, Kiwis, Windies and even Pakistan - but NOT Australia or RSA who have consistently been successful in keeping VS down.

Posted by JNitin on (September 28, 2012, 6:49 GMT)

Dhoni should be dropped to play T20 games. He is a good one day and Test player. He can't even maintain SR of 120 in T20 games. Scoring 35 runs of 32 balls is not a good sign for team. Sehwag plays better than dhoni. He scores with better SR than Dhoni..

Posted by Jawwad.ali on (September 28, 2012, 6:48 GMT)

well dhoni did take a bold decisionl in WC semi against pak. putting nehra in place of ashwin .......... and it worked ........n am sure there r plenty more as well @"For all his famous instinctive calls during games, MS Dhoni has hardly ever taken a bold decision as far as selecting the India XI is concerned."

Posted by HarishVS on (September 28, 2012, 6:39 GMT)

Anyway it is Dhoni who is deciding which 11 will take the field. Still I feel not bad to say that Sehwag is not the one to be dropped. True Gambhir has been a big match player and has contributed in all formats of the game before. I always have high regards for him. But Gambhir's current form has been patchy and scratchy nowhere near helping the team to win matches. One of the reasons may be that he has been playing in almost all the games that India are entitled to play like Tests, ODIs, T20s or IPLs. So he needs a break and can be rested for this game. He can be again back in future games as India advance. Sehwag is not one-dimensional. It is Dhoni's problem that his off-spinners were been called up for. It does not matter that Ashwin and Bhajji are regular offies. One or two Sehwag overs against non subcontinent teams will not be any worse than sub-standard Balajis or Dindas.

Posted by Mahesh-Cricket on (September 28, 2012, 6:33 GMT)

Al_Bundy1 says Sehwag scores only against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. I dont know which game Al_Bundy follows. Sehwag is more prolific against better bowling in all forms of the game. His best test knocks have come in Multan and Melbourne against the best of bowling attacks. He is now having a lean patch worsened by an injury which does not allow him to bowl, therefore making his place in the team uncertain.

We must not read much in to any rift between him and Dhoni. Everybody fights and patches up. Friends and family fight, but mostly get back together. Why should not the same happen (or happened) between Dhoni and Sehwag? It happened between Dravid and Sachin too in Pakistan a few years ago. They are friends and team members first, and have spent a lot of time together in hotels and dressing rooms. They have every reason to discuss, argue, have difference of opinion or whatever... like all of us do. What's long as they perform on the field (which they most often do)??

We never know this guy Dhoni. He might have made this statement just for misguiding Aus Team Plans. He might just as well play Sehwag and go on with 4 frontline bowlers: Pathan, Zaheer, Ashwin, Harbhajan. Any other allrounder in India (Yuvi/Raina/Sehwag) in combination will be better than the FIFTH frontline bowler. Dinda doesn't to International Team. Balaji could be considered as 4th bowler instead of Zaheer.

the statements coming out in media suggests clearly that sehwag wont be playing, not bcoz dhoni wants 5 bowlers but he doesnt want sehwag to flourish, any ways i guess the team would be some what like this 1.gambhir 2.pathan 3.kohli 4 raina.5.rohit 6.yuvi 7.dhoni 8.bhajji 9. ashwin 10 zahir 11balaji/chawla the favour india very much in colombo so india win is d most likely result

Posted by electric_loco_WAP4 on (September 28, 2012, 6:03 GMT)

Whatever be the team composition, the result be no different. The Indian bowlers better pray Watson and Warner don't do it again. Still who's gonna stop Mr. Hussey and the rest. Add to that a fiery bunch of young 140kph+ pacers....

Posted by Alexk400 on (September 28, 2012, 5:46 GMT)

Dhoni chicked out changing team during 7-0 test losses. Reason is simple. He is a conservative person. He did not want to change and if he loses the test , there are people ready to pounce on him. Now we all know dhoni wants to win a world cup without sehwag's help. He can. It is possible. Anything is possible. Its in subcontinent. So he should drop sehwag if he can find better XI. He should take risk once in a while. For me sehwag is best Indian captain ever despite 7-0 loss. Test loss was due indian bowling and batsman failure not because of dhoni as much. Dhoni should go without sehwag to prove to all sehwag and all his fans he can win a world cup without sehwag's help. For dhoni is lucky captain. You can say he has the destiny. Problem is the if anyone ego got too much they will be destroyed by that ego. DHoni ego is growing into everest level.... So his ego might tell him to go without sehwag and his excuse will be he fielded india's best XI. I wanted to see he has the guts.

Posted by SASANK360 on (September 28, 2012, 5:41 GMT)

For all of you guys calling sehwag a bad fielder, he is infact a very good slip catcher. Early in his career he was slim and very fit and also less lathargic. Just have a look at some footage of his fielding early in his career, he was exceptional. But over the years he transformed into a quality batsman. This made him very arrogant and reluctant to use the nets and fitness camps. Read the column written by Greg chappel. He was not playing mind games but warning India at the right time. His arrogance has made him surrender to different injuries and miss 2 t20 world cups and many other games. Just look how burly he is. The burliness has handicapped him and he can now field only in slip cordon. He needs to work on fitness and also on his batting. As what Mike hussey said viru is never out of form. He is taking a break from responsibility which makes him a liability in team. He must act fast if he wants to prolong his career.

Sehwag factor gone nw nd wat others think is he cant do anyhting more than wat young players doing it nw.... so as of nw enough s enough.... get ready to get out of the team sehwag....its nt gonna be easy but sehwag had seen these kind of scenarios already in the case of dravid & dada

Posted by VJGS on (September 28, 2012, 5:01 GMT)

"he is the only batsman in the side who has to be hidden on the field." Spot-on! Even though Gambhir isn't the best fielder, he is more than decent. Sehwag, on the other hand, performs occasionally well at the slips and flops out most other times. His fielding is even worse than Ashwin's or Zaheer's.

finally they decision i have been waiting for, Sehwag should def be dropped and open with pathan, if you give pathan a chance over and over, he will def come through. Sehwag is a useless batman, who can only bat on Indian pitches, he is def the worst fielder in the indian team right now in this 20/20 team, and he rarely bowls, why do we need him when he throws away his wicket, and kohli winds up making up for him. He should be done in every format, and chances should be given to rahane, or someone young like umuckt chand, he is looking good like kohli did when he was 19, give him a chance.

Really funny!! I mean dropping Rohit Sharma is the ideal solution, everyone knows it, but instead are they going to drop a proven performer like Sehwag?? Silly really!!

Posted by barwala_vasi on (September 28, 2012, 4:33 GMT)

I don't think he is going to drop Yuvraj so looks like this is it for Sehwag as far as this world cup is concerned. If Dhoni has his way sehwag won't feature in any odi or 20-20. Lately there have been so many articles about sehwag's 'bad form' which I think is little exaggerating of the facts considering that other than Kohli rest are in the same boat. To me he is an all time great even if he hangs his bat today. There are only 3/4 guys that have scored more runs than him in test/odi in India. @al_bundy1: the reverse is true. He doesn't have a good record against those countries. So I don't know where you getting your stats. I hope he gets picked but it is highly unlikely to happen.

Posted by timohyj on (September 28, 2012, 4:26 GMT)

It makes more sense to drop gambhir or yuvraj than sehwag. Gambhir has been completely out of form and he has been getting out to or missing balls that he would have hit for four before. Yuvraj also has not proved himself and his bowling will not be needed very much if they play a fifth bowler. If sehwag gets a good knock then India will definitely win, and even if he doesn't he will still give the team a fast start. One of these players should be dropped instead of sehwag

Posted by joseyesu on (September 28, 2012, 4:22 GMT)

Another senior is going to be axed from the team and this time it is Sehwag. T20 needs not only hitters, but also athletic seems. Now team is considering of replacing SEHWAG.

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 4:17 GMT)

Sehwag is the most inconsistent player in the side at the moment , and it's a big risk playing him in important stage of the tournament . It's better to play somebody else who can contribute 20-25 runs in a match than going by the reputation of sehwag who has been a failure in recent times . The team that played against England should be the first choice to play rest of the matches with the inclusion of Ashwin .

Posted by aujender on (September 28, 2012, 4:10 GMT)

Without Sehwag India looks an ordinary side just like BJP is looking without AB vajpayee. I think dropping of Sehwag is not on cricketing reasons and it is just on personnel reasons. Whole system of BCCI is running on personnel relations. Sandeep Patil has been made the Chief Selector just to keep Dhoni as Indian Captain for sometime more. But it is now sure that the way MSD is treating all those seniors who comes out against him is going to cost India dearly. It will be visible in this T-20 world cup itself where Indian is not going to go beyond Super 8. May GOD give some reasonable mind to BCCI and MSD

Posted by leosunil07 on (September 28, 2012, 4:07 GMT)

Equation @ 7 'Batsman, 1' Allrounder, 3' Bowler 1. Gambhir, 2. Irfan, 3. Virat, 4. Sehwag, 5. Rohit, 6. Yuvraj, 7. Dhoni, 8. Raina, 9. Harbhajjan, 10. Ashwin, 11. Zaheer

Because Dhoni is more likely using part time bowling, rather than full time. So no point in taking fifth bowler.

Posted by Mr.Chandi on (September 28, 2012, 4:03 GMT)

I don't know why Dhoni is preoccupied with playing Balaji and Dinda. They are ordinary at best.I believe we would making it easier for the aussies with them in the side I think India should go in with 2 pacers and 2 spinners and keep Sehwag. He maybe ordinary at present, but with him u never know - for a team that has been struggling to clear the ropes his X-factor is essential

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 3:52 GMT)

My plan would be drop viru if india is batting first... If india bats second they should have an extra batsman by adding viru to chase down that score..

Viru makes the bowlers fear.. without him its like snake without teeth..

we want shewag.rohit is worst.

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 3:27 GMT)

Playing with four specialist bowler, where we have five specialist bowlers in our squad. After the win against ENG the indian team had an image that our bowling looks very strong and easily hide the fact that we are using part time bowlers more than our regular bowlers recently some time we used almost 8 bowlers. Our strength is batting we need to rely on that. MSD lost his cricket skills in Australia his rotating policy dragged us even we couldn't qualify for the finals. Relying more on Rohit is also big joke. The main problem with MSD is he is putting more pressure on the seniors we already lost RD and VVS from the test squad. Sure if he continue like this we will loose Viru and GG from T20 and one day matches.

Posted by Alexk400 on (September 27 2012, 22:51 PM GMT) Calm down. Its all about team combination and not just some individual performances .I don't remember last time when did sehwag and gambir made some 50 runs partnership in all formats of the game?.His fitness and careless attitude is costing India while chasing any big target. Every time you see kohli comes to crease within 3 overs minimum as either sehwag or gambir will be back to hut.You have to value the wicket if you are an opening batsmen. You can't say his playing style is like that ,sometimes you need to take responsible as a n opening batsmen. to give team a good start, not just some 5 or 10 runs.Being a sehwag fan ,looks like you want him to play by thinking about his past glory.Think about team and not your favourite individual cricketers. sehwag has poor stats against Australian young bowlers also.Think wise instead your usual tendulkar bashing here.

A mix of talent + experience will help India fight the Aussies. Dhoni should come out with the below list at the toss today: 1. Gambhir 2. Sehwag 3. Kohli 4. Rohit 5. Raina 6. Dhoni 7. Harbhajan 8. Pathan 9. Ashwin 10. Zahir 11. Chawla

Posted by Al_Bundy1 on (September 28, 2012, 2:41 GMT)

Sehwag is a useless batsman. He can score only against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. He should be dropped forever. Open with Pathan or Rohit.

Posted by pravineswar on (September 28, 2012, 2:14 GMT)

I would prefer dropping Viru from ODI & T20 team and make him captain of Test side dropping MS. Over the years, Sachin's ODI consistency has overshadowed Viru's limitations in shorter format. Viru is better at providing quick but brief starts. Now with Sachin ageing, we need consistent starts (currently not happenin with Viru) in limited over format so our formidable middle order can cash in. This T20 WC is not end of world, so i would drop him from today's match and open with Rohit/Ash/Yuvi along Gambhir for rest of tournament and identify gud T20 opener to replace. Viru's Test record is unconquerable and deserves respect and if he believes he is better at No.05, i would let him that but as a senior he should take more responsibility like leading the side and taking India back to No.01. That would be his new challenge. By this form & fitness can be manageable, there is enough motivation & challenge (leading) for him. It ensure no place is granted incl MS and lesson for all youngsters

Drop rohit sharma for god's sake

Posted by   on (September 28, 2012, 2:02 GMT)

Shewag must be there in the side. Look shewag is also a good fielder. % bowlers is a good concept and its just 20-20 , we can do the batting. But bowling is the main concern. I wpuld suggest Raina can be dropped and his recent performances were not good and he s not comfortable too.. See we tried rohit to open the innings in a T20 World cup and we failed. Dropped shewag for two T20 worldcups and we couldn't get into semi's. We have given more chances for these youngsters and backed them. Y not dhoni backup shewag?? y is he not doing? He must be given confidence. He will come strong surely. Without shewag , Team doesnt look gud. :( 1.Sewag , 2. ghambir , 3. kholi ,4.rohit , 5.yuvi ,6.dhoni,7.Irfan , 8. Bhaji,9.Ashwin,10.chawla,11.Balaji /zaheer

This team will do good :)

Posted by henchart on (September 28, 2012, 1:59 GMT)

MSD is not going to bite the bullet and leave Sehwag out.Zaheer,Pathan,Ashwin and Harbhajan would be the 4 main bowlers with Sehwag,Yuvraj and if need be Rohit Sharma doing the fifth bowlers job.Ideally,Rohit should not have been on the plane to Sri Lanka leave alone in the playing XI.

Posted by SpartaArmy on (September 28, 2012, 1:46 GMT)

It is a good idea to drop an out of form batsmen to afford 5 bowlers, it doesn't matter which format it is. But where do we find that 5th bowler here, Balaji? Warner/Watson/Hussies will walk half way down the track before he even bowls and hit it out of the park every time; Dinda? Cummins would damage all the satellites which are closest to srilanka while BLINDFOLDED; Chawla? they won't hit him, they let him give 5 extras every third ball. Yuvi can bowl far better than these three bowlers in a T20/ODI if he is still in the same form.

I love to watch Sehwag bat. He has immense talents, strike the ball like no other, is very aggressive batsman and scores very quickly. He can change the match in about 6-7 overs. However, he looks fat and very unfit. He doesn't look like an International athlete competing at the highest level. Hi is unfit almost 50% of times, half fit 25% more times. His fitness is costing him and the Indian team down big time and he doesn't seem to pay enough attention to it. His recent records against International teams have been very poor. Perhaps, part of it is due to his very poor fitness. Still, I wouldn't drop Sehwag to bring pace-ballers like Dhinda or Balaji. Performance of Balaji and Dhinda has been very poor in this tournament. I think he should be played against Australia and if he flops again, perhaps, Tiwari can replace him in the next match. Or, play Sehwag in all matches and if he flops in all, rest him for a year or two or until he improves his fitness.

Posted by Jose on (September 27, 2012, 23:59 GMT)

Dhoni's attitude towards Seniors has always been politically contemptuous. He had rift with Ganguly first and then Laxman. Don't know if he had any with Dravid. While, with Sehwag, its been running for a while. He may be regarded as a greatest captain, but his greatness is limited to shorter format of the game.

Posted by VasBos on (September 27, 2012, 23:47 GMT)

If I were in captain's shoes, I would keep Shewag for the rest of the matches (no matter if he succeeds or fail) and if things don't work out - Shewag will be, anyways, out of the T-20's going forward.

Stats will indicate that on any given day, 7 or 8 players contributions alone are enough for winning a match. its okay for the rest 3 or 4 players to have off-day on the field.

The selectors need to avoid these kind of delicate situations for the captain by strictly dealing with these kinds of players (who are not willing to give their 100% and liability to the team )

Kim Hughes, David Gower , Ian Botham, Kris Srikant were all treated very badly on this aspect towards the end of their carrier.

My 5 cents - Rohit should open the innings with Gambhir [even though he has been quite ordinary off late]. Sehwag should be dropped. India should play Bhajji as Aussies also don't play spin well. Really wish Indian Selectors picked Praveen Kumar & Yadav. Dinda & Balaji are average at best. Whatever happened to Munaf Patel? My playing X1 - Rohit Gambhir Kohli Yuraj Raina Dhoni Pathan Ashwin Bhajji Zaheer Chawla [Had to slot him as balaji & Dinda are crap]

With these 3 sides coming up in super eights... 1) AUS 2) PAK 3) SA... These teams are extraordinary and very well balanced sides.... Its t-20 peeps, even if India are allowed with an exception to go in with 21 players they will end up on the loosing side against these 3 sides... wait n watch...

Posted by THEGREATFANOFMASTER on (September 27, 2012, 22:27 GMT)

I think sehwag should be played, the expirince of him is needed against world class pacers, irfan can bat but facing 90 m/p/h will not be easy for him and swing can get him as well even medium pacers can get him early,Sehag will be eager to give answer to gregg chappel he will definately score if he is played, other thing which can be done is play yuvraj as an opener as he in not utilesed and cant be relied on in nail bitting situations lately in the innings.

Posted by SimplyHK on (September 27, 2012, 22:15 GMT)

One of the Asian side should win this cup Ind, Pak & Sri. Please India Pakistan show some rigidity today. Those who win today will qualify to semis as they gain confidence and winning momentum. But this not applicable on Pakistan because, I don't know much about Pakistan, even they don't know themselves ;) very unpredictable but very good side of T20 must say.

Posted by   on (September 27, 2012, 21:52 GMT)

I think Rohit needs to be dropped so many chances and he has failed apart from one Innings!!

Posted by kaidranzer on (September 27, 2012, 21:37 GMT)

Oh come on. Doesn't matter whether you stuff 4 bowlers or 5 bowlers in the team. With Indian bowling, it never matters. All bowlers are ordinary. England just had an off-day. Get 4 bowlers, make up the 4 extra overs with part-time spin and keep Sehwag. He will click once in this tournament surely. And when he clicks, India wins. One guaranteed win is enough to keep him in the team for this World Cup.

Posted by Nampally on (September 27, 2012, 21:33 GMT)

Abhishek, India does not have 5 good bowlers in the squad to start with. Irfan, Yuvraj & Ashwin are all rounders & they are really the 3 out of 5 bowlers we are talking about. The only decision is to take 2 more from ZAK, Harbhajan, Balaji, Dinda & Chawla. Balaji is not an Internatioinal class calibre. Dinda bowled so badly against England that no captain in right mind will even think of including him against the Aussies. ZAK is reasonable with the new ball. Let him bowl his 4 overs with the new ball. The other guy who can be economical is Harbhajan based on his T-20 experience. Chawla is a huge risk. So ZAK & Harbhajan are the other 2. Sehwag is a good off spinner (best in India according to Bedi). So dropping Sehwag against the Aussies will be suicidal because Kohli might be facing the new ball. If Sehwag hits his form, he will demolish the Aussies as no other Indian batsman can. I would much rather risk an out of form Sehwag..He is the Indian Trump Card & Aussies Nightmare!.

Posted by SimplyHK on (September 27, 2012, 21:09 GMT)

Dhoni should go with six bowlers other wise Aussie will make 250+ against street standard bowlers .......... Bhajji Chawla and Ashwin would be effective if change strategies acc to situation

Posted by   on (September 27, 2012, 20:54 GMT)

Those who want raina to be dropped, just watch highlights of ind vs aus wc QF and ind vs pak wc semi final. Had raina not played such crucial cameos, sachin's world cup dream would have remained....... Raina has a t20 wc century and is the only Indian to score century in all 3 formats. HE IS A TRUMP CARD ALWAYS.

Posted by   on (September 27, 2012, 20:40 GMT)

Don't let Irfan open the innings. Not again. He forgets hitting and just continue to block balls for the rest of his career. That slot requires not a senior or an all-rounder but a specialist batsman. Batting at 1,2,3 should be as fixed as possible. Rest can be flexible. But there is nothing special if the order changes from one match to the other given the performances of top order. And I would not recommend Dhoni in the top 4 slots. OK, if he is a hitter, but we want to keep him alive as a keeper for the rest of the tournament also. He need not show up at 3 or 4 every now and then. 1,2 among Gauti, Sehwag and Virat. 3 for Virat or Raina. 4 for Raina , Yuvi or Rohit. 5 for Rohit, Yuvi or Dhoni. 6 for Dhoni or Raina. Yuvi and Rohit require team's trust and should be offered more bat than Dhoni. I believe in 6-5 combo for rest of the tournament. 2 spinners and 3 pacers would be best in SL especially Vs Australia and South Africa. I would like to see Dinda in place of Balaji tomorrow.

this is very good decision dropping sehwag i am agree with dhoni, i think dhoni is one of the best captain in the world cricket

Posted by sportsfan on (September 27, 2012, 20:31 GMT)

It would be a stupid idea to play 5 bowlers. Rarely international teams play with 5 bowlers in limited over matches. I remember WI playing with one specialist bowler (Corey collymore) in an ODI. On an average a part time bowler might give up 10 runs more than an a specialist bowler in 4 overs but an extra specialist batsman would make on an average 20 runs more than a specialist bowler. I agree with @ nyc_missile . Dhoni's tactics of wasting balls in limited overs cricket is pathetic. He may be doing it intentionally as nyc_missile points out or he is unable to score faster. In either case he should be dropped. India lost many mathes because of his slow scoring in early stages of his innings. I think Gambhir should be dropped before dropping Sehwag.

Posted by MasterClass on (September 27, 2012, 20:10 GMT)

@AlexK400 - didn't you see how the short ball just sat up to be smacked to any corner of the ground? This is not AUS, ENG or SA. This is SL. Sure there may be swing and movement. There may be bounce as well. But the pitch is still slow. Kholi, Rohit, Dhoni, etc. all played the pull shot well against NZ. Oram & Southee are no mugs with their fast bouncy bowling. So give it a rest mate.

Posted by TRAM on (September 27, 2012, 19:49 GMT)

I said this before. Even kids from Aus know how to bowl to Sehwag and contain him and ultimately get him. He does not score high nowadays because bowlers have learnt how to NOT bowl to him. And if he cant score, he will get out. You cant have one approach (swinging with no foot work) to work against every one all the time. And who are the 5 bowlers? Please dont tell me Zaheer is playing. Ind can pack off right now, if Zak is playing. People keep saying India's strength is batting. I disagree. With Bajji getting his confidence and Chawla showing his class, India's strength is SPIN. No team can manage Ashwin+Bajji+Chwla = deadly combination. Mark my words. Ind batting is weak barring Kholi. Please bring in Tiwary and keep the spin trio in the 11. IPathan and Balaji (yes he is the weakest link, but better than Zak as of today) plus Kohli are enough pace attack. Play to your strength, not to your old history/reputation. Dhoni, pl show you mean business & dont succumb to senior-pressure

Posted by nyc_missile on (September 27, 2012, 19:26 GMT)

Funnily enough I agree with some who say Sehwag is better than Dhoni in terms of forcefulness and impact.Sehwag for all his failures has SR of 150 in both ODIs' & T20s which is lot better than Dhoni's who just eats up too many balls and invarably turns canters into nail-baiting finishes.May be he does it to claim credit or whatever but that is a wrong strategy that aint working. He just needs to smash like he did in late 2005 through 2006.So in that sense if Sehwag doesn't merit a place(rightfully) Dhoni doesnt either.Add to his atrocious selection abilities like Abhishek points out,we have a non-thinking listless skipper who is failing even in his preferred format. Time to drop Dhoni and take a chance with Kohli a la Graeme Smith.Times they are- a- changin

Posted by fanofteamindia on (September 27, 2012, 19:16 GMT)

Dropping Sehwag will be one of the fantastic decision in his captaincy career for Dhoni. It is one logical choice to have 5 bowlers when you have atleast 2 of your frontline bowlers tonked every match. And anyway, Irfan can open and score the 8 to 10 runs that sehwag is scoring every match.

Posted by   on (September 27, 2012, 19:09 GMT)

i think Yuvi should dropped...he is not doing so well with the bat,& his bowling is not necessary as india going with 5 bowlers. So i think yuvi should dropped instead of viru,,,,,,,,

Oh my god! Why not take Rohit out? His so called innings against England was patchy to say the least, not to forget that it was one off inning after consisitently failing for number of innings. Sehwag at least inspires a lot more confidence. He can also be played in middle order in place of Rohit if Pathan is to be continued for opening.

one thing i want to conform useless dhoni, without shewag in the line up of 11 its impossible to get a good start. we have seen in the last 2, 20-20 world cups we did lost very badly, now and again if u drop sehwag,u will loose the combination of a good start. i dont know but i am sure, if sehwag do sent play we will loose all the games, coz we have rohit sharma who is good for nothing playing against the weaker teams.

Posted by namets on (September 27, 2012, 18:36 GMT)

i think sehwag must play because he only batsman in india who fire at any time in aus lake off exp. in place off rohit play with manoj tiwari who give u one more chance for spinner so play with this lineup dhoni 1.sehwag 2.gambhir 3. virat kohli 4. ms dhoni 5. yuvraj singh 6. suresh raina 7. pathan8.manoj tiwari 9. harbhajan singh 10. l balaji 11. z khan if india need dhoni come up in bating order

Posted by   on (September 27, 2012, 18:31 GMT)

dhoni may play ten specialist bowler but at the end he may still be short of bowler, i think captain must know that whatever he has won is just due to batting strength of india , i can see if there is difference in economy rate or strike rate between specialist bowler and part timer . dinda economy rate is above 10 something . i think that india should play with eight batsman and go for any total which has been put before . i have never seen raina , kolhi or rohit going more than 9 an over . so if we are chasing we would have target some where around 160 to 170 and that we can chase . what do you say guys

Dropping Sehwag is good decision. Even being most senior batsman he hasn't learnt to to use his footwork to different bowling. Some bowlers fear him but many of them know how recklessly he plays and knows how to get him out. Why keep him if he can not deliver. May be he will learn a thing or two about sennsible batting by watching others play. Gambhir is a sincere player but still need to be reminded not to nick outside off stump deliveries AND know that his job is to stay around till the end.

Posted by Alexk400 on (September 27, 2012, 18:21 GMT)

Why do even people bring manoj tiwari in to the team?. He is grinder at his best. When he had 120+ strike rate in IPL? I know he scored few 50s in IPL. thats about it . Aussies gona rain short ball at indians. It will be awsome to watch what going to happen tomorrow. I see aussie win easily.

India are faced with the same problem as us Aussies...the captains being the week links in the side. Too late to change either captains in the middle of a World Cup but both definetely have pressure on them to score runs if the top order collapse. Good luck Aussies!!!

Let Dhoni decide and let him face the bricks and flowers. Its just a game not the end of the world. He has lead India with a different approach than other captains-apart from Ganguly who was one of a kind leader. We will win the CUP with 7 batsmen and 4 bowlers.

As much as I hate to say it , fact remains Sehwag is out of form. So Dhoni who is not in great form himself should come out to open . This will enable him to get in Bhaji into team and maybe even Tiwary whose legspin for an over or two can be useful

dhoni should drop himself and give gloves another one

I believe Sehwag will be dropped, and from a left-right combo perspective, Rohit could open the innings instead of Irfan Pathan. People calling for Raina's head haven't seemed to realize that India is playing the World T20, and not World Test Championship, or have not seen Raina field or bat or bowl in T20s.

for me selecting sehwag is a crucial move if u are playing with five playing xi would BE 1 GAMBHIR 2 ROHIT 3 VIRAT 4 YUVRAJ 5 DHONI 6 RAINA 7 IRFAN 8 ASHWIN 9 HARBHAJAN 10 PIYUSH 11 ZAHEER because pitch at Colombo is turning and spinners have done the job well....but its every one individual point of view..

Posted by   on (September 27, 2012, 16:43 GMT)

leave viru bai but dont open wid irfan, dhoni can make a brave move by promoting rohit to open the innings.

first of all mr Dhoni u didn't deserve Place in indian team right now...even ashok dinda is batting well than you.if u want to play with 5 bowlers drop ur pet raina.what was his perfomance in recent games..u dont act smart..

Posted by   on (September 27, 2012, 16:36 GMT)

i think sehwag must play....and dhoni should drop rohit even then he has performed against england..sehwag is a match winner and he creates an energy in the side against the teams like my view dhoni mustl go with 1.sehwag 2.gambhir 3. virat kohli 4. ms dhoni 5. yuvraj singh 6. suresh raina 7. pathan8. r ashwin 9. harbhajan singh 10. l balaji 11. z khan

Dhoni Himeself Thinks as a Super Man ...Compare 2 Sehwag MR Dhoni you are nothing....I have never Seen like u as a Indian captain....if u want to play with 5 bowlers Drop your Pet raina...what was your Performance in past games..u have no right to place in indian cricket team.

Let's play to our strength, which is batting! Play 4 bowlers, 2 seamers and 2 spinners. No need to drop Sehwag. Australia will be more than happy not seeing Sehwag in the line-up. If our seam bowlers had been doing great, it would make sense to drop a batsman. But the seamers have been not so good so far to put it mildly. I would pick Irfan, Zaheer, Bhajji and Ashwin and then use Yuvi as 5th bowler. Kohli can also be used for an over or two.

Posted by Rajesh_india_1990 on (September 27, 2012, 16:02 GMT)

Even player of sehwag's calibre is doubtful in the Indian playing 11..this shows how strong indian batting line up is..

Viru needs to be dropped. Too much promise, not enough performance - by now every fast bowler knows how to get him out. It's unbelievable that a professional cricketer is regularly too unfit to bowl or field! It may be too late for him to make another comeback, but who has he to blame but himself? I completely agree with Greg Chappell's views on Viru. An amazingly talented batsman who simply cannot work hard enough to keep his place in the national side, like Sreesanth the bowler. Time for that poor work ethic to be dropped from Team India.

Dhoni says he will play 5 bowlers. Its important to identify them. The combination will have atleast 2 spinners and R Ashwin & H Singh look favourite. Dhoni has a preference for 3 seam bowlers. I Pathan is the only certainty here. These men are good enough batters at 7, 8 & 9 also. The rest of 2 spots will most likely be filled by L Balaji & Z Khan/A Dinda. It is unlikely that P Chawla will be the 2 nd spinner at the expense of H Singh or 3rd spinner at the expense of a seam up bowler as S Raina & Y Singh are quite good leg spinners capable of bowling an over or two. MS Dhoni talks of combination of batting order. V Kohli and MS Dhoni are certainties along with S Raina. G Gambhir, Y Singh & R Sharma may well make it to XI but will be pressed hard by M Tiwary & V Sehwag.

Against Australian Bowlers Sehwag can launch attack...otherwise india will hardly gonna manage 160...Gambhir is playing much worse than Sehwag, So if somebody required to be dropped It should be him...Dhoni should also evaluate his own performance in recent time...Bowlers afraid more than any other indian batsman so why give them a relieve before match.

Posted by Angry_Bowler on (September 27, 2012, 15:35 GMT)

No sentiment and past glory in sports please. Only fit and in form players should be in the playing XI. Horses for courses.

I will support MSD for dropping Viru, I acutally think dropping Gambhir wouldnt be a bad idea as well. WE have players to back the team. Viru should concentrate on test cricket, get his grove and fitness back. Forget ODI and T20s, he should focus on tests and getting india back up. For Tmrws game.. 1. Irfan 2. Rohit 3. Virat 4. Yuvi 5. Manoj Tiwari 6. Dhoni 7. Raina 8. Ashwin 9. bhaji 10 Zaher 11. Balaji/ chawla depending on the pitch. GOODLUCK INDIA

My team is gambhir kohli raina yuvi dhoni sharma Pathan Harbhajan ashwin balaji khan/dinda/sehwag

Here most of the cricket pundits in India thinks Wicket keeping is damn easy. If it is that easy means why Dravid continue when he was captain. Why Sanga left it test. Why Baz not doing it in Odi n test. But Dhoni never did(though he plays more matches than others). In such case how u guys suggest DK , Patel ,Saha as Dhoni replacement. Some said patel i remind you during aus test match Ganguly kept Dravid as 2nd Keeper behind Patel becoz of his woeful keeping.

Posted by   on (September 27, 2012, 15:22 GMT)

Guys, leave the decision making process on Dhoni. With the best captaincy record to his credit, I am sure, he knows what's best for Indian cricket team. Everyone else like we can only guess WILD and emotionally.

Posted by sknaveen on (September 27, 2012, 15:10 GMT)

This is ridiculous. How can unproven Rohit Sharma get an extended run when in extremely bad form when the same courtesy cannot be extended to a senior batsman. Ideally Sehwag should be dropped but in the current context should not be dropped after giving Sharma so much slack. It would simply send out a terrible message about the team management.

Posted by Nampally on (September 27, 2012, 14:41 GMT)

If Dhoni drops Sehwag against the Aussies it will be a crazy decision!. Gambhir is playing much worse than Sehwag & is a "compulsive poker" of the balls outside the off stump. Though Sehwag has not scored heavily, he always manages 20's or 30's at a good S/R compared to Gambhir's single digit scores. Against the Aussies, India needs a batsman who puts fear of God in the bowlers. Sehwag is one who can do it if he is really pushed & challenged. His century when it comes will flatten the bowling so totally that one should not even think of dropping him. He is one of the best off spinners who is never allowed to Bowl by Dhoni. So Dhoni needs to put his differences aside with Sehwag & make amends by giving him a star treatment, as he really is. Drop Dhoni, then Aussies will enter the field already ONE UP!. obvious 5 bowlers are Ashwin, Irfan, ZAK, Yuvraj/Sehwag, & Harbhajn.Balaji & Dinda are too expensive to be in the XI. Dhoni should not be messing about at this Super 8 stage with the XI!

Posted by PMKKR on (September 27, 2012, 14:41 GMT)

Harbhajan and ashwin both should be in the team, opening should be Kohli and Gautam try Sehwag at number 4.

Posted by   on (September 27, 2012, 14:32 GMT)

Dhoni should go with five bowlers otherwise aust. will make 250 minimum against the street standard bowling line up of india ....

Posted by zorrotsongo on (September 27, 2012, 14:31 GMT)

Dhoni is a spectacular Captain. He never bothered about the results, give to them due respect, however, for a team's success he will never mind to take a bold decision. Don't be soaked into past glories. Unless Dhoni takes calculated risk India won't lift the 2011 WC. Now it is time for a revamp. Boys are waiting on the bench to exel. Even Manoj Tiwary can open the innings with Irfan. BRAVO! BRAVO! DHONI DON'T LOOK BACK STICK WITH YOUR INSTINCT.

Posted by Munafis810 on (September 27, 2012, 14:28 GMT)

Sehwag can be rested for Australia match. But he needs to play Pakistan and SA because i love the way he spanks rasGULa . Other than that Sehwag is out of form and inform guys like Tiwari are on the bench which is not fair. Pathan can open or perhaps send Bhaji and if Bhaji mangees to connect a couple to boundary we are on a flier

Posted by lankavigi on (September 27, 2012, 14:27 GMT)

Will be really stupid if Sehwag is dropped. He's one batsmen who can change a match on it's tails in a matter of overs. So Mr.Cool, keep it cool and don't try to act smart by dropping your top batsmen. India's strength is batting, so why weaken it. Play to your strengths!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
