ICC World Twenty20 - 3rd match, Group A

Afghanistan v India

India won by 23 runs

7.20pm The teams line up for the national anthems. Gareth, who seems to follow every cricket match around, mails in: "This may be a highly unpopular motif but... Go Afghanistan! Tough without Hamid, their real strike bowler, but I have faith!" Yup, that injury is a big blow.

Yogi is from India but.. :"I will be rooting for the underdog. Their story has been just amazing."

Sehwag and Gambhir walk out, two guys who formed a potent opening partnership but aren't as feared anymore as they once were. Sehwag is ranked No. 57 in the ICC's T20 rankings.

Shapoor Zadran to start things off for Afghanistan. The left-arm fast bowler has a long run-up.

7.15pm Afghanistan haven't had too bad a time in the build-up to this tournament. They won a tournament in Port-of-Spain, beat Sri Lanka A in a warm-up game, but lost to one of the favourites West Indies.

Also, here's a Dhoni stat that surprised me. He's been run-out six times in T20I, that's the most times any one has been dismissed in that manner.

7.00pm Toss Afghanistan choose to field. Mangal says he wants to field first since he has a strong batting line-up.

MS Dhoni: "I think the pitch will remain the same, it might get a bit slower as the match progresses." This match will be played on the same track as the Australia v Ireland game. India have left out Harbhajan from the 12 who played the warm-up match against Pakistan, so L Balaji keeps his place ahead of Ashok Dinda.

Don't know much about the Afghanistan team? Read this.

In 2010 as well, the third match of the World Twenty20 was India v Afghanistan. India didn't have too much of a problem then.

A couple more articles to occupy you as we wait for the game to start. Here's our man at the ground Abhishek Purohit on the Rohit Sharma question. And Nagraj Gollapudi has spoken to Brad Hodge, Murali Kartik and Shane Bond to find out how batsmen, spinners and fast bowlers have changed their approach to Twenty20 over the years. Here goes.

6.50pm Still ten minutes to go for the toss. We have plenty to keep you occupied. Sid Monga previews the game here, and analyses India's chances in the tournament here. He doesn't seem to think they will do too well in the tournament. India will stick to their four-bowler policy, which worked so well for them in the 2011 World Cup, MS Dhoni has confirmed.

Afghanistan who have provided one of cricket's most heart-warming story over the past few years, get another chance on the big stage. Their captain Nawroz Mangal sounds confident ahead of the game. Sample quote: "We have done brilliantly in the past against quality spinners. We played [Saeed] Ajmal in the Pakistan game and yesterday, we played [Sunil] Narine, and we haven't seen difficulties."

6.45pm Greetings, and welcome to the day's second game. It's India v Afghanistan. Will it follow the pattern of the first two matches, with the big side outplaying the smaller one? Or can Afghanistan give India a fright?

Surely you have already joined our fantasy game already? Still time to make changes before India v Afghanistan.

0.1

Shapoor Zadran to Gambhir, 1 wide, starts with a short and very wide one that sways away

0.1

Shapoor Zadran to Gambhir, 3 runs, short of a length ball just outside off, a little too short perhaps, Gambhir punches that crisply through the covers off the back foot, nearly sends it all the way to the rope

0.2

Shapoor Zadran to Sehwag, 1 run, picthed up this time, a bit of width, Sehwag swings at it and sends it down towards third man for a single

0.3

Shapoor Zadran to Gambhir, 1 run, tight line around off this time, Gambhir drops the ball towards point and sets off for a quick single, Sehwag and Gambhir aren't the greatest of runners between the wickets, but Gambhir loves these quick singles early in his innings, Sehwag has to put the skates on, and Afghanistan nearly gave away four overthrows there, but a good bit of backing up prevents any extra runs

0.4

Shapoor Zadran to Sehwag, 1 run, opens the face and guides it towards third man for a single

0.5

Shapoor Zadran to Gambhir, no run, pitched up and down the leg side, Gambhir could have glanced that for four, but he misses

V Sehwag    2* (2b)

1.1

Dawlat Zadran to Gambhir, 1 run, nearly a wicket first ball there, Gambhir could have been out twice off that delivery, first he almost spooned a catch to mid-off as he looked to play the ball to square leg, the leading edge drops short of the charging fielder, he would have been easily run-out there as well, the throw misses and he survives

1.2

Dawlat Zadran to Sehwag, no run, on the pads, worked towards square leg

1.3

Dawlat Zadran to Sehwag, no run, no feet at all from Sehwag, it was short and wide, and usually Sehwag would have dispatched that to the deep point boundary, he misses out this time

1.4

Dawlat Zadran to Sehwag, 1 run, another leading edge, this was pitched up by Zadran, Sehwag was looking to work that to the leg side from the off stump, edged behind backward point, not the most assured of starts here

Dawlat Zadran to Gambhir, 1 run, Zadran grunts as he delivers that one, full and outside off, inside edge this time and the fizzes in the direction of short fine leg, after ricocheting off the keeper's pad, it bounced twice before it reached the keeper, India not middling it too often here

Vijay chak: "I actually was in the stadium when MS ran himself out in one of those games. It was india vs west indies in Barbados last world cup. And that was a game changing run out. Hopefully no more of those"

Shapoor Zadran to Gambhir, OUT, Gambhir's played on here, Shapoor has struck, in recent times Gambhir's problems have been generally been with the outside edge, this time it is the inside edge as he pokes at the ball, middle stump is reclining on the ground, it was a short of length ball just outside off, Gambhir's feet doesn't move much as he plays that weak prod

V Sehwag c †Mohammad Shahzad b Shapoor Zadran 8 (25m 10b 1x4 0x6) SR: 80.00

5.6

Gulbadin Naib to Yuvraj Singh, no run, Yuvraj mistimes this one, down the ground and it hits the stumps at the non-striker's end

Kedar: "@Harik Split screen sure is pretty annoying. Back in the day, they used to show those PIP insets in one of the corners of the screen where they would show batsmen running when the main picture would have either a action replay or the live cast of a fielder chasing the ball in the outfield. that was good in my opinion. Split screen is a definite no-no."

18.2

Dawlat Zadran to Raina, 1 wide, round the wicket, full and too wide outside off

18.2

Dawlat Zadran to Raina, no run, better this time, keeps it full, outside off again but it is closer to the stumps, Raina looks to jab that to the off side but can't connect

18.3

Dawlat Zadran to Raina, 5 wides, this isn't good from Afghanistan, that was a shortish ball down the leg side, a dive from the replacement keeper isn't enough to stop it running to the boundary

18.3

Dawlat Zadran to Raina, no run, a near yorker outside off, Raina again can't connect, the keeper having a tough time

18.4

19.2

19.2

Mohammad Nabi to Raina, OUT, not a bad comeback though, Nabi has Raina bowled, Raina was charging down looking for the big hit, he misses and that crashes into off stump

SK Raina b Mohammad Nabi 38 (42m 33b 6x4 0x6) SR: 115.15

19.3

Mohammad Nabi to Sharma, 1 run, a low full toss on off stump, to midwicket for a single

19.4

Mohammad Nabi to Dhoni, no run, superb delivery that, a pinpoint yorker, even Dhoni, who is perhaps the best hitter of the yorker in world cricket, can't do anything with that except block it

19.5

Mohammad Nabi to Dhoni, FOUR, MSD power, another attempted yorker, this time Dhoni gets under it, absolutely murders it down the ground, no stopping that one

19.6

Mohammad Nabi to Dhoni, SIX, a gift to finish off the innings, a juicy full toss is slammed over midwicket for a six, Dhoni finishes the innings in style, India end on 159

Not quite the batting performance MSD would want from his side, which is so reliant on its batting to deliver the wins. Afghanistan's bowlers sent down some testing deliveries, but mixed in some freebies as well - highlighted by 14 wides. The fielding was sharp early on, but the catches started to go down with alarming frequency midway through the innings.

Do India have the bowling to defend 159? We'll find out soon. Back at 9.20pm.

End of over 20 (16 runs) India 159/5

RG Sharma    1* (1b)      Dawlat Zadran    4-0-25-1
