ICC World Twenty20 - 12th match, Group D

Bangladesh v Pakistan

Pakistan won by 8 wickets (with 8 balls remaining)

Hello everyone, Alex Winter here to see whether Pakistan can chase 176 to win this match or 140 in defeat to qualify, who's your money on? It was a fine effort with the bat from Bangladesh and now another effort is needed with the ball to pull this off...Mortaza will open the bowling...

0.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, edged and just wide of first slip diving high to his right, nearly the perfect start for Bangladesh, it swung away and the back foot drive produced a thick outside edge

0.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, fired into the pads, strikes the thigh guard, beaten for pace slightly

0.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, outside off, punched away behind square and timed well wide of third man, too much width

0.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, forward to a length ball around off stump, played towards point

0.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, full length and angled in, whipped out to deep midwicket

0.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Imran Nazir, 1 run, forward just outside off, ran off the outside half down to third man

Fortune involved but a solid start for Pakistan, who I firmly expect to chase these runs down, it's such a good pitch, coming on nicely...

End of over 1 (10 runs) Pakistan 10/0 (166 runs required from 19 overs, RR: 10.00, RRR: 8.73)
Imran Nazir    1* (1b)      Mashrafe Mortaza    1-0-10-0
Mohammad Hafeez    9* (5b 2x4)

"Alex, we here in Austin have taken a poll. We believe Pakistan will qualify in defeat, but we're very impressed with the grit of the Bangladesh side! They did what they had to..." Yes Mitch, they've given themselves a chance, here's Shafiul Islam to share the new ball...

1.1

Shafiul Islam to Imran Nazir, 1 run, pulled, comes off high on the bat straight to mid on and dropped a very simple chance at head height and Abul Hassan has put it down, very poor indeed

1.2

Shafiul Islam to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, angled in towards off stump, played forward into the covers

1.3

Shafiul Islam to Mohammad Hafeez, 2 runs, dropped into midwicket with the wrists from outside off, good running brings two

1.4

Shafiul Islam to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, angled in too straight and worked out to deep square leg, fine leg is up for that's a dangerous line

1.5

Shafiul Islam to Imran Nazir, no run, short ball outside off, ducked

1.6

Shafiul Islam to Imran Nazir, FOUR, down the wicket, reached for and slugged into the leg side, this evades deep square

End of over 2 (8 runs) Pakistan 18/0 (158 runs required from 18 overs, RR: 9.00, RRR: 8.77)
Imran Nazir    6* (4b 1x4)      Shafiul Islam    1-0-8-0

2.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, outside off, a lean forward and block towards cover

2.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, another drive, this time to point, again pretty well timed from outside off

2.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, mistimed straight drive, runs towards mid on, they race through for the single

2.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Imran Nazir, no run, very good bumper, sharply ducked, it was well directed

End of over 3 (5 runs) Pakistan 23/0 (153 runs required from 17 overs, RR: 7.66, RRR: 9.00)
Imran Nazir    6* (5b 1x4)      Mashrafe Mortaza    2-0-15-0
Mohammad Hafeez    17* (13b 3x4)      Shafiul Islam    1-0-8-0

3.1

Shafiul Islam to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, just outside off, punched off the back foot to extra cover

3.4

Shafiul Islam to Imran Nazir, FOUR, length ball outside off and clubbed over mid off for a one bounce four, slapped away clearing the front leg, super strike but you can't offer them width

3.5

Shafiul Islam to Imran Nazir, 5 wides, short ball drifts down the leg side, out of the reach of the keeper, oh dear

3.5

Shafiul Islam to Imran Nazir, FOUR, short again, and pulled for four behind square, so comfortable in helping that around the corner

3.6

Shafiul Islam to Imran Nazir, SIX, short again and this is taken from outside off all the way for six over wide midwicket, fine strike

End of over 4 (20 runs) Pakistan 43/0 (133 runs required from 16 overs, RR: 10.75, RRR: 8.31)
Imran Nazir    20* (8b 3x4 1x6)      Shafiul Islam    2-0-28-0
Mohammad Hafeez    18* (16b 3x4)      Mashrafe Mortaza    2-0-15-0

Like I say, this pitch is too good to score fewer than 140 on...

4.1

Mashrafe Mortaza to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, full ball around off stump, driven without timing it up towards mid off

4.2

Mashrafe Mortaza to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, timed well enough to chip it over mid off and it runs away for four, the pitch made the shot fly away, wasn't perfectly timed, a little low on the bat

4.3

Mashrafe Mortaza to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, back of a length, goes to pull, gets it high on the pad and it bloobs into the on side short of the deep fielder

4.4

Mashrafe Mortaza to Imran Nazir, no run, fuller just outside off, only a block to cover

4.5

Mashrafe Mortaza to Imran Nazir, FOUR, length ball on the stumps, a brief step to leg and smashed over extra cover, lovely timing

4.6

Mashrafe Mortaza to Imran Nazir, SIX, pulled and it's away for another boundary, bit of a top edge but sails over the rope

Bye bye Bangladesh at this rate...

End of over 5 (15 runs) Pakistan 58/0 (118 runs required from 15 overs, RR: 11.60, RRR: 7.86)
Imran Nazir    30* (11b 4x4 2x6)      Mashrafe Mortaza    3-0-30-0
Mohammad Hafeez    23* (19b 4x4)      Shafiul Islam    2-0-28-0

Change of tack now and it's needed badly, Abur Razzaq to bowl...

5.1

Abdur Razzak to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, length ball around off stump, punched to extra cover

5.2

Abdur Razzak to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, too short, but only cut to cover point

5.3

Abdur Razzak to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, back to cut and missed, this is good stuff, just skidded on a bit

5.4

Abdur Razzak to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, little too wide, cut hard but a fine diving save from Hossain at point saves four

5.5

Abdur Razzak to Imran Nazir, FOUR, too short this is, slapped to the cover fence, poor ball punished, found the gap well

5.6

Abdur Razzak to Imran Nazir, 1 run, back cut from just outside off to short third man, they scamper a quick run

End of over 6 (6 runs) Pakistan 64/0 (112 runs required from 14 overs, RR: 10.66, RRR: 8.00)
Imran Nazir    35* (13b 5x4 2x6)      Abdur Razzak    1-0-6-0
Mohammad Hafeez    24* (23b 4x4)      Mashrafe Mortaza    3-0-30-0

Another change here, Shakib-al-Hasan did it with the bat, can he do it with the ball...

6.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Imran Nazir, no run, slides on with the arm, huge lbw appeal, was it going down? Too high perhaps too

6.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Imran Nazir, 1 run, down the wicket and slapped down to long on

Hawk Eye suggests that lbw was very much out...

6.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, down the wicket, lost it in the flight, has to reach out and just block it

6.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, a reach outside off and block towards cover point

6.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 wide, slung down the leg side, well taken from the keeper

6.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, back of a length, pushed out to deep cover hanging back

6.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Imran Nazir, 1 run, back again, played to deep midwicket

Well bowled but Bangladesh need wickets if they are going to pull this off, Pakistan well on course...

End of over 7 (4 runs) Pakistan 68/0 (108 runs required from 13 overs, RR: 9.71, RRR: 8.30)
Imran Nazir    37* (16b 5x4 2x6)      Shakib Al Hasan    1-0-4-0
Mohammad Hafeez    25* (26b 4x4)      Abdur Razzak    1-0-6-0

7.2

Abdur Razzak to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, straighter and clipped down to long on on the back foot

7.3

Abdur Razzak to Imran Nazir, FOUR, great shot, two steps down and lifted up and over extra cover, races to the rope, smart batting and lovely timing

7.4

Abdur Razzak to Imran Nazir, 2 runs, step back and cracked wide of long off again, just two this time as the fielder comes round

7.5

Abdur Razzak to Imran Nazir, 1 run, full on a length, driven solidly down to long on

7.6

Abdur Razzak to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, step down again, dropped in shorter and played back to the bowler

Excellent progress for Pakistan, they're well on course here...

End of over 8 (9 runs) Pakistan 77/0 (99 runs required from 12 overs, RR: 9.62, RRR: 8.25)
Mohammad Hafeez    26* (28b 4x4)      Abdur Razzak    2-0-15-0
Imran Nazir    45* (20b 6x4 2x6)      Shakib Al Hasan    1-0-4-0

Another change now and Abul Hasan comes on, wickets needed and fast...

8.1

Abul Hasan to Imran Nazir, no run, starts wide of off stump but it bounces a little and flies through to the keeper, nice that

8.2

Abul Hasan to Imran Nazir, FOUR, short and pulled between long leg and deep square leg

The first one carried through and the bowler got far too keen...

8.3

Abul Hasan to Imran Nazir, 1 bye, slower ball outside off, the back cut misses but the keeper fumbles and they steal a bye

8.4

Abul Hasan to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, back of a length on the stumps, went to back foot drive and got it back to the bowler

8.5

Abul Hasan to Mohammad Hafeez, 2 runs, short and helped on it's way down the leg side, two between the deep fielders

8.6

Abul Hasan to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, full and wide, driven at and missed

End of over 9 (7 runs) Pakistan 84/0 (92 runs required from 11 overs, RR: 9.33, RRR: 8.36)
Mohammad Hafeez    28* (31b 4x4)      Abul Hasan    1-0-6-0
Imran Nazir    49* (23b 7x4 2x6)      Abdur Razzak    2-0-15-0

9.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Imran Nazir, no run, middle and leg, went to sweep, runs off the pad towards square leg

9.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Imran Nazir, SIX, short and hammered into the stands, another poor ball dragged down and it's lifted over the pickets with superb timing once more

9.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Imran Nazir, 1 run, outside off, reached for, comes off a whirl of an outside edge towards deep cover but it lands short of the fielder

9.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, back and cut only back to the bowler off a bottom edge

9.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, sliding in with the angle, played out to deep cover

9.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Imran Nazir, no run, forward and blocked around middle and off stumps

End of over 10 (8 runs) Pakistan 92/0 (84 runs required from 60 balls, RR: 9.20, RRR: 8.40)
Imran Nazir    56* (27b 7x4 3x6)      Shakib Al Hasan    2-0-12-0
Mohammad Hafeez    29* (33b 4x4)      Abul Hasan    1-0-6-0

That's the fastest 50 in this year's World T20, a fine effort...

10.1

Mahmudullah to Mohammad Hafeez, 2 runs, pulled into the leg side, mistimed, but the deep backward square can't get in to take it

10.2

Mahmudullah to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, cut out to deep cover from off stump

10.3

Mahmudullah to Imran Nazir, FOUR, too short, rocked back and cut to the cover fence in front of the sweeper, powerfully punished again

10.4

Mahmudullah to Imran Nazir, 1 run, around the wicket, full and straighter, dropped into midwicket

10.5

Mahmudullah to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, delicate late cut but only to short third man

10.6

Mahmudullah to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 leg bye, goes to sweep from outside leg stump, runs off the pad to the 45

End of over 11 (9 runs) Pakistan 101/0 (75 runs required from 54 balls, RR: 9.18, RRR: 8.33)
Mohammad Hafeez    32* (37b 4x4)      Mahmudullah    1-0-8-0
Imran Nazir    61* (29b 8x4 3x6)      Shakib Al Hasan    2-0-12-0

Cakewalk really here for Pakistan, still with so much left in the tank...

11.1

Abdur Razzak to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, too short, AGAIN, but the cut stroke can only find extra cover

11.2

Abdur Razzak to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, back of a length and it's flicked away between backward square and midwicket, oh what timing, it's raced between the fielders amazing shot

11.3

Abdur Razzak to Mohammad Hafeez, FOUR, another shot one and can you guess? put away to cow corner on the pull, awful ball, 14th boundary

11.4

Abdur Razzak to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, full, dabbed to short third man, good running

11.5

Abdur Razzak to Imran Nazir, 1 run, back of a length again, lucky to only be pulled down to long on

11.6

Abdur Razzak to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, waited for and late cut to short third man

End of over 12 (11 runs) Pakistan 112/0 (64 runs required from 48 balls, RR: 9.33, RRR: 8.00)
Mohammad Hafeez    42* (42b 6x4)      Abdur Razzak    3-0-26-0
Imran Nazir    62* (30b 8x4 3x6)      Mahmudullah    1-0-8-0

Seemingly no way for Bangladesh to stop this charge, they have bowled appallingly and not for a second had it looked like they have been in the frame to keep Pakistan below 140...Shakib returns now, he's bowled quite well considering...

12.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, middle and off, driven into the covers for a single

12.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Imran Nazir, 2 runs, step down and slugged to long on, wasn't quite to the pitch, a sliding fumble allows the second

12.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Imran Nazir, 1 run, chopped cut to point, they run, a direct hit to the non-striker's end would have seen a run out

12.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, down the wicket, again not to the pitch, slugged through the leg side off an inside edge

Scores identical at this stage...

12.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Imran Nazir, 1 run, middle stump line, coming down, slapped past the bowler, more runs as long off comes round

12.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Mohammad Hafeez, no run, sliding in, flicked with the angle to short long leg

End of over 13 (6 runs) Pakistan 118/0 (58 runs required from 42 balls, RR: 9.07, RRR: 8.28)
Mohammad Hafeez    44* (45b 6x4)      Shakib Al Hasan    3-0-18-0
Imran Nazir    66* (33b 8x4 3x6)      Abdur Razzak    3-0-26-0

Abul Hasan returns, only a matter of time now...

13.1

Abul Hasan to Imran Nazir, FOUR, back of the hand slower ball, goes down on one knee and taken from outside off wide of midwicket for another boundary

13.2

Abul Hasan to Imran Nazir, 2 runs, length ball around off stump, clearing the front leg and smashing past the bowler, a sliding save from long off

13.3

Abul Hasan to Imran Nazir, OUT, length outside off, a tennis shot down the ground and caught at long off, a really entertaining knock is ended by Nasir's greed of trying to hit another ball to the rope, got it low on the bat and it was straight to the fielder who this time managed to hold on

Imran Nazir c sub (Farhad Reza) b Abul Hasan 72 (61m 36b 9x4 3x6) SR: 200.00

13.4

Abul Hasan to Mohammad Hafeez, 1 run, outside off, back foot push to deep cover

13.5

Abul Hasan to Nasir Jamshed, 1 run, back of a length and flicked through square leg

13.6

Abul Hasan to Mohammad Hafeez, OUT, outside off, a faint edge and caught behind. It was a full wide ball that Hafeez chased, reaching for it got a thin edge to the keeper

Mohammad Hafeez c †Mushfiqur Rahim b Abul Hasan 45 (65m 47b 6x4 0x6) SR: 95.74

End of over 14 (8 runs) Pakistan 126/2 (50 runs required from 36 balls, RR: 9.00, RRR: 8.33)
     Abul Hasan    2-0-14-2
Nasir Jamshed    1* (1b)      Shakib Al Hasan    3-0-18-0

So the scenario to win the game just became a touch more laborious but still very much gettable...

14.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Nasir Jamshed, 1 run, played with the turn towards mid on coming forward

14.2

Shakib Al Hasan to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, waited for and late cut to short third man, they dash through for the single but surely there shouldn't be a run there, it was straight to the fielder

14.3

Shakib Al Hasan to Nasir Jamshed, 1 run, pushed through a tough quicker, tucked past midwicket

14.4

Shakib Al Hasan to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, stayed in the crease and clipped a middle and leg ball wide enough of short long leg for a single

14.5

Shakib Al Hasan to Nasir Jamshed, 1 run, step down the wicket, dropped in short, waited for and slapped down to long off

14.6

Shakib Al Hasan to Kamran Akmal, no run, tossed up nicely, ran back to the bowler from just outside off

That is Bangladesh's best bowler finished...can they back it up and have a chance of at least winning this game?

End of over 15 (5 runs) Pakistan 131/2 (45 runs required from 30 balls, RR: 8.73, RRR: 9.00)
Kamran Akmal    2* (3b)      Shakib Al Hasan    4-0-23-0
Nasir Jamshed    4* (4b)      Abul Hasan    2-0-14-2

15.1

Abul Hasan to Nasir Jamshed, FOUR, too wide and driven past point, placed well and timed really well, almost reached for it too much stepping to leg

15.2

Abul Hasan to Nasir Jamshed, SIX, goodness me is this guy in form, step back into the crease and takes a length ball around middle and leg around square leg onto the grass banks, what a shot that it

And Pakistan have qualified for the Super Eights...

15.3

Abul Hasan to Nasir Jamshed, 1 run, fuller outside off, driven down to long off

15.4

Abul Hasan to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, too straight to the right-hander, flicked wide of long leg, four more, well timed

Two guys at the crease now in great form, good signs for Pakistan...

15.5

Abul Hasan to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, short and outside off, uppercut over backward point into the fact, that is terrible, terrible bowling, awful delivery and slapped to the fence

15.6

Abul Hasan to Kamran Akmal, no run, much better, full and driven to mid off

Carnage that over was, dreadful...

End of over 16 (19 runs) Pakistan 150/2 (26 runs required from 24 balls, RR: 9.37, RRR: 6.50)
Kamran Akmal    10* (6b 2x4)      Abul Hasan    3-0-33-2
Nasir Jamshed    15* (7b 1x4 1x6)      Shakib Al Hasan    4-0-23-0

Mahmudullah to bowl...

16.1

Mahmudullah to Nasir Jamshed, 1 run, length ball, flicked past midwicket to the man in the deep

16.2

Mahmudullah to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, reverse swept from outside leg stump to the cover sweeper

16.3

Mahmudullah to Nasir Jamshed, FOUR, back and pulled hard past mid on, powerful strike

16.4

Mahmudullah to Nasir Jamshed, SIX, on one knee to slog sweep, comes off the toe of the bat and goes towards long on, who takes the catch! But then falls on the rope, sums it up really

16.5

Mahmudullah to Nasir Jamshed, 1 leg bye, angled in, runs off the front pad to short long leg

16.6

Mahmudullah to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, wide and full, slapped away past point for four more

Another horrendous over really, save the toe-ended six that would have been caught by a taller man...

End of over 17 (17 runs) Pakistan 167/2 (9 runs required from 18 balls, RR: 9.82, RRR: 3.00)
Kamran Akmal    15* (8b 3x4)      Mahmudullah    2-0-24-0
Nasir Jamshed    26* (11b 2x4 2x6)      Abul Hasan    3-0-33-2

Odds on it being wrapped up this over...nine to win...Razzaq to bowl...

17.1

Abdur Razzak to Nasir Jamshed, 1 run, back and punched down to long on

17.2

Abdur Razzak to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, back to play to leg, off a leading edge past cover

17.3

Abdur Razzak to Nasir Jamshed, 1 run, full towards middle and off, played down to long on

One hit will do it...

17.4

Abdur Razzak to Kamran Akmal, no run, length ball, down to slog sweep, miscued, comes off a bottom edge to the 45

17.5

Abdur Razzak to Kamran Akmal, no run, fired in full, dug out to midwicket

17.6

Abdur Razzak to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, nice and full again, dug out past the bowler for a single

End of over 18 (4 runs) Pakistan 171/2 (5 runs required from 12 balls, RR: 9.50, RRR: 2.50)
Kamran Akmal    17* (12b 3x4)      Abdur Razzak    4-0-30-0
Nasir Jamshed    28* (13b 2x4 2x6)      Mahmudullah    2-0-24-0

This over then...Shafiul Islam to finish it off...

18.1

Shafiul Islam to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, good yorker...too little too late...dug out past the bowler

18.2

Shafiul Islam to Nasir Jamshed, 1 run, slower ball onto leg stump, clipped down to long leg

18.3

Shafiul Islam to Kamran Akmal, no run, full and wide, just inside the guideline so not a wide, Tim Southee-esque that delivery

18.4

Shafiul Islam to Kamran Akmal, 1 wide, short and left outside off stump, called wide, obviously bounced too high

18.4

Shafiul Islam to Kamran Akmal, FOUR, length ball outside off and slapped past mid off to finish it in fitting style, clearing the front leg, another lovely strike

So that concludes a very uninspiring group stage with all the matches firmly going one way. There have been glimpses of the entertainment this tournament could provide but we're yet to have that spark, that tight match to get everyone on the edge of their seats. Hopefully the Super Eights can give us that and we'll all be back after a day's break for the start of that second phase as Sri Lanka play New Zealand at 3.30 IST on Thursday. England and West Indies also in action that evening, before attentions turn to Colombo on Friday. Have a peaceful day off tomorrow, see you Thursday...

Presentation time. "The pressure was on us but Shakib played very well," says Mushfiqur Rahim "We can take some positives out of this and go home and work on a few things. We're not used to playing on these wickets."

"It's a great team effort, the boys have shown the right attitude so far in this tournament," says Mohammad Hafeez. "Our bowler's tried well but there is a little bit of a concern about the fast bowlers. But I am very happy as captain and the team are responding to me." Man of the Match is also on the Pakistan side, and it goes to Imran Nazir for his smashing 72 from 36 balls.

Just to confirm, the Super Eight stages were pre-arranged by the seedings so it doesn't matter who has won the groups, the teams in each section of the next phase were known long ago. Pakistan, therefore, take their place alongside India, Australia and South Africa in Colombo.

So Pakistan win by eight wickets and have romped home with the bat, Bangladesh were all over the place with the ball and in the field and are going home, while Pakistan go down to Colombo to play in the Super Eights. It ended up being a touch one-sided which was a shame after the excellent effort batting first, particularly Shakib-al-Hasan, but Pakistan have achieved their highest successful chase and ensure there is no upset in this year's World T20 with all the minnows going home at the group stage and realistically, looking rather out of place.
