Basil Pauncefote was educated at Rugby and won four Blues at Oxford between 1868 and 1871, the middle two as captain, as well as making eight appearances for Middlesex. His final first-class match was for Middlesex against Oxford in 1872. He will be remembered fort his role in Cobden's Match of 1870 where, as Oxford captain, he agreed to allow play on the second day to be extended despite the fact that on the first evening his side had found it very hard to bat in failing light. On the next evening, Cobden's pace in the gloom was too much and Oxford lost by two runs. In 1872 he left England for China, and latterly moved on to Sri Lanka. He died in London in 1882, aged 34.
