South African-born but a British passport-holder, Gareth Roderick was given a deal by Gloucestershire in the autumn of 2012 following an outstanding season for Cheltenham in the Western Premier League. He soon established himself as the first-choice wicketkeeper.

His Gloucestershire debut came in May 2012 and he impressed with both gloves and bat, making two Championship centuries, including 152 not out to secure a draw at Kent. He was established as Gloucestershire's first-choice wicketkeeper, but ready to kick on in 2014, he broke a finger in a warm-up match in late March and missed the first month of the season. He returned in May but broke the same finger again against Kent at Bristol and only returned for the final three matches of the season, making 98 at Worcester and a first-class best 171 against Leicestershire at Bristol.

A strong 2015 meant that his standing had grown enough to be named as Gloucestershire's Championship captain the following summer - the youngest Championship captain in the country at the time - although his firm dipped and he also suffered yet another finger fracture. Illness then disrupted the first half of his Championship season in 2017.

His career began in his native South Africa with KwaZulu-Natal, for whom he made his first-class debut in March 2011. He played a full part in the following season, scoring three half-centuries before his move to England.
