Piloo Reporter was an umpire from a very early age, standing in local leagues in his early twenties and in the Ranji Trophy from the age of 29. He was a regular official in first-class games, eventually making his Test and ODI debut in 1984-85. In 1986-87, alongside VK Ramaswamy he became one of the first neutral officials to stand in a Test since 1912 when umpiring a match between Pakistan and West Indies. He was the only Indian umpire to be selected for the 1992 World Cup. He wrote a book about his career, called An Umpire Remembers.
