Shashank Manohar
Profile

An introvert bordering on the recluse, Shashank Manohar is a prominent Nagpur lawyer who became the BCCI president in 2008. He has been a staunch Sharad Pawar loyalist, the man he took over from. Pawar had to vacate the post to become the ICC vice-president. Manohar's relationship with Pawar goes back to the time when Pawar was Maharashtra's chief minister and his father, VR Manohar, the advocate general of the state. Manohar's first tryst with cricket politics came when he took charge of the Vidarbha Cricket Association in 1996. He first hit big-time news when India were given a greentop for the Nagpur Test of 2003-04 against Australia, at a time when Jagmohan Dalmiya, Pawar's rival, was in power. Ever since Pawar became BCCI's president in 2006, Manohar has been a critical part of the think-tank. He has been known to be a hardliner: he suggested performance-related remunerations and contracts for the players after the World Cup debacle in 2007. Despite such a high-profile job, he manages to stay a simple man: he doesn't carry a cell phone or a watch, he didn't have a passport until 2007, and his first foreign trip was to Dubai to attend the ICC meeting in 2008.
