Late strikes help India A pull even against WI A

West Indies A 264 for 5 (Brathwaite 92, Edwards 91, Rasool 2-60) v India A

West Indies A's Kirk Edwards and Kraigg Brathwaite kept India A's bowlers at bay for almost two sessions with a 172-run second-wicket stand, but quick strikes in the last session meant the teams were even at the end of the opening day of the first unofficial Test in Mysore.

Edwards and Brathwaite came together in the third over of the morning at the early loss of opener Kieran Powell, who was dismissed by Mohammad Shami, after West Indies were asked to bat and put the visiting team in a position of strength with a strong stand.

Edwards, who had scored a match-winning century last week in Bangalore, was the dominant partner in the stand, hitting 11 fours and a six in his innings. But his dismissal for 91, to Ishwar Pandey, in the 58th over allowed India a way back.

Brathwaite, who had played more than 200 deliveries in his innings, was dismissed for 91 by Parvez Rasool 11 overs later. Rasool soon added another wicket, that of Narsingh Deonarine, to slow West Indies' charge.

From 175 for 1, West Indies were soon reduced to 237 for 5, but Assad Fudadin and Chadwick Walton prevented any further damage, ending the day at 264.

Believe it or not, Kirk Edwards never actually failed sufficiently to be dropped. In England where almost everyone failed, he was the one to become the WICB pinata'. I believe that he was unfaired and deserves another chance. May he get another chance and grasp it with 4 hands. That said, WI is doing the right thing and giving the youngsters a go. Whereas IND,ENG,SA and AUS always seem to have well equipped pllayers to fill a spot, we always seem to lacking. Our players are talented but our regional set-up make them look inefficient at the highest level. Allowing them to play in the WI-A team around the world, will help to close that gap between the top nations and ourselves.

Longer formats get bowlers to do something as wicket is not easy to come by as batsmen are not in hurry and bowlers have to be crafty to get wickets. Good to see indians focusing on longer formats as they have a lot of talent and should survive in tests as well.

For India Pandey shows he belongs to the big league. Amazing find for India in a barren group of pace bowlers.

I watched the game from the stands. My first time ever watching a cricket game in the stadium where some players were of international level. Enjoyed the half an hour for which i bunked my engineering class. Ashok dinda was jeered and booed a lot by the crowd as we all remembered his dissapointing IPL returns and his trashing at the hands of gayle. Felt sorry for the guy. Braithwhite was all class and is saw his wicket fall right before my eyes. Amazing catch that. Will definitely go this saturday. Oh yes, the entry was free!

West Indies is slowly back to competitive level if not at its best like early 90s. They have a good and steady one day team, and an incredible T 20 Warriors. This A team success is certainly gave them a much needed bench strength also.
