ESPNcricinfo staff

South Zone 33 for 2 (Gautam 8*, Aparajith 0*) v North Zone
Scorecard

Gautam Gambhir opted out from the North Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone after complaining of fever on the second day and left for Delhi just before the start of play. The toss finally happened at 3.00 pm on day 2 after the first day had been washed out. South won the toss and elected to bat with the possibility of 30 overs in the day.

KL Rahul and Abhinav Mukund started steadily, scoring 23 in the first six overs. In the first delivery of the seventh though, Mohit Sharma surprised Rahul with a bouncer, the batsman only managing a top edge to Rishi Dhawan at fine leg. He scored 9. Another wicket followed soon after when Siddarth Kaul had a length delivery sneaking between Mukund's bat and pad to knock the stumps. It happened to be the last over of the day and South went back with the score on 33 for 2 when the play was called off due to bad light.

South Zone Abhinav Mukund (capt), KL Rahul, CM Gautam (wk), Baba Aparajith, Dinesh Karthik, Manish Pandey, Stuart Binny, HS Sharath, Malolan Rangarajan, Abhimanyu Mithun, Pragyan Ojha

North Zone Jiwanjot Singh, Unmukt Chand, ID Singh, Mandeep Singh, Virender Sehwag, Nitin Saini (wk), Rishi Dhawan, Harbhajan Singh (capt), Mohit Sharma, Sarabjit Ladda, Siddarth Kaul.

i think there is no proper organisation by the BCCI towards the domestic matches , they can shift the game if a weather prediction is bad for a clt20 game, but they didnt did the same in this situation knowing that the semi between north and east was washed out, they could have moved this game to another venue. Really no care towards the domestic matches. FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOlish decision by the indian board.

@Timekiller: Kerala has traditionally been poor in cricket, but in the last two years, their peformances in Ranji has been decent. On the other hand, last couple of years, Tamil Nadu has not been performing well in Ranji, although they are traditionally strong in cricket. It is in fact surpising that only one non TN/karnataka player (Ojha) figures in the team. Surely the Hyderabad/AP/Kerala teams are not that bad. I agree with Sudhir Gabriel that it is surprising to see the omission of Jagadeesh (given his recent performances for India A). And given that Mithun doesn't have any sting in his bowing, it may have made sense to take a risk with Sandeep Warrier. But maybe, the Kerala players wanted to focus on their upcoming Ranji match against Assam.

Gambhir out of final, out of favor too? Missed another opportunity to make his case, not withstanding the hundred he made in the last match.

@Sudhir Kerala did well only in limited overs cricket last season, but not in First Class(Ranji). Have you seen Kerala's performance in Ranji in the last 10 years? That too they play in Group C ( lowest league) Have you seen the batting record of V.A. Jagadeesh and Sanju Samson in Ranji last season? Samson averages 31 in Ranji. Jagadeesh averages 37. Not good enough for Duleep. CM Gautham averages 49, also he is a wicket keeper. CM Gautham scored highest number of runs in Ranji last season.

The South Zone is always dominated by Tamil Nadu and Karnataka coterie as you can clearly see from the team playing the Duleep Trophy finals is packed with 10 players from these states. There are good players from the other states but even if they are selected they never get a chance to play. They could have easily fitted V.A. Jagadeesh and Sanju Samson in this team as they have performed well in the last year. K.L. Rahul and C.M. Gautham have done nothing of note in the chances that they got so far but are still persisted with. This is pure favouritism shown by the South Zone powers that be.
