Indian Premier League, Final: Chennai Super Kings v Royal Challengers Bangalore at Chennai, May 28, 2011
Chennai Super Kings won by 58 runs
28 May 2011 - night match (20-over match)

Khan to Vijay, 2 runs, Vijay edges straight away, and runs like a hare. Zaheer angles it across gently, Vijay's feet move lazily into the shot and briskly thereafter. The ball screams away to third man and he rushes back for the second. Wide throw helps his cause.

Khan to Vijay, no run, better from Vijay, moves nicely into a check drive as Zaheer again angles it across him

Khan to Vijay, 1 run, Vijay again leans across with authority and punches wide of mid-off for a single.

Chennai Super Kings 4/0   M Vijay 3* (3b)

Aravind to Vijay, 3 runs, some trademark Vijay timing on that, and there are two yellow-shirted gazelles sprinting between the wickets. Short of a length angling in gently, Vijay stays back in the crease and whips it off the back foot wide of mid on. How did they pick up three there? Superb running.

Aravind to Vijay, no run, short of a length and angling across Vijay who is decisively forward and pushes into the covers.

Aravind to Vijay, SIX, that's a shot Vijay can play in his sleep. That's a shot you can wake up from your sleep to watch. Short of a length ball, the kind coaches advice you to bowl. Can't drive, can't pull. Unless you are Vijay. He just reaches a foot across and then wallops it off the front foot emphatically in front of midwicket.

Chennai Super Kings 16/0   M Vijay 12* (6b 1x6)

Khan to Vijay, 2 runs, Vijay's looking really good here. Back of a length ball angles into the pads, and he easily works it around through square leg for two more.

Khan to Vijay, 1 run, fullish ball outside off, Vijay leans into a nice straight drive and doesn't over-hit it. Gets only the single though.

Chennai Super Kings 26/0   M Vijay 15* (8b 1x6)

Gayle to Vijay, 1 run, tossed up slowly on off stump, Vijay reaches out and works it down the track for one.

Gayle to Vijay, 1 run, tossed up again from over the wicket to Vijay who works it off the pads with the spin for one more

Gayle to Vijay, 1 run, Vijay chops it away through point for one more single

Chennai Super Kings 35/0   M Vijay 18* (11b 1x6)

Syed Mohammad to Vijay, 1 run, on Vijay's pads, he calmly taps it into the largely vacant areas in front of square inside the circle on the leg side.

Chennai Super Kings 40/0   M Vijay 19* (12b 1x6)

Gayle to Vijay, SIX, everytime one of these guys hits a six, the other one responds with a bigger one. Vijay bounds out to Gayle this time, it is a ball with rare flight from Gayle and he thumps it over wide long-on. Four sixes, no fours yet tonight.

Gayle to Vijay, no run, holds it back a touch, Vijay quietly defends.

Gayle to Vijay, 1 run, surprises everyone with a beamer almost, and Vijay pushes into the off side for a single

Chennai Super Kings 55/0   M Vijay 26* (15b 2x6)

Vettori to Vijay, 1 run, lovely drifting, curling ball that swims in and lands in front of middle and off as Vijay pokes a little uncertainly. Single takes to the leg side in the end.

Vettori to Vijay, 2 runs, they are playing him watchfully here. And well, they have run another improbable couple. Tossed up and curving in, Vijay taps it softly to long-on and they charge up and down, these guys.

Vettori to Vijay, no run, aha, Vijay advances and Vettori flattens the trajectory. Vijay is in no man's land and does well to force it back to the bowler though he wasn't to the pitch of the ball. Good start from Dan.

Chennai Super Kings 61/0   M Vijay 29* (18b 2x6)

Mithun to Vijay, 1 run, short of a length and coming in, CSK seem to be playing within themselves here. Vijay drives to long-on for an easy single

Chennai Super Kings 65/0   M Vijay 30* (19b 2x6)

Vettori to Vijay, 2 runs, back of a length on the pads, Vijay whips it towards midwicket. I have run out of words to describe how fast they run, so I'll just stick to saying that they have somehow got two. Again.

Vettori to Vijay, 1 run, Vijay chips out, gets too close to the pitch and drives to long-on for one more.

Vettori to Vijay, SIX, another six. Vijay almost inevitably dances out of his castle, and this time late enough to ensure Vettori can't see him and change plan. The ball lands in the swinging zone this time and Vijay obliges with the sort of shot that would make Ernie Els proud. Retrieve it from long-on

Vettori to Vijay, 1 run, good response, Vettori throws it right up in the blockhole and Vijay has to dig it out to the point area. They still get a single.

Chennai Super Kings 84/0   M Vijay 40* (23b 3x6)

Mithun to Vijay, no run, nice bouncer, caught Vijay unawares and he chose to let it go just outside off.

Mithun to Vijay, FOUR, they dropped catches off Chennai in the final of IPL 2010. They have dropped catches off Chennai in IPL 2011. And they are still doing it in the final. Length ball, angles into Vijay who helps it along over midwicket. Ended up timing the lofted chip better than he wanted, and Pomersbach was patrolling the fence. He ran back and tried to take it, but it slipped through. No cool hand, Luke.

Mithun to Vijay, no run, lazy shot, but Vijay survives. It is full and on the stumps, he tries to hang back in the crease and thump it hard straight down the ground. Gets a thick under edge away. No run taken, pardon the scoring glitch earlier.

Mithun to Vijay, FOUR, Chennai are taking this away. Gayle will have a lot of work to do later. Slower ball, too full and too easy to spot. Vijay walks into position and gracefully caresses it over extra cover for four more.

Mithun to Vijay, 1 run, shortens the length at normal pace, Vijay stays back and taps it towardsmid-off for one more.

Chennai Super Kings 93/0   M Vijay 49* (28b 2x4 3x6)

Syed Mohammad to Vijay, 1 run, full toss outside off. Not a wise option to a man who is hitting it like Vijay has been. This time, he quietly drives down to long on for a single. 50 up. Well played!

Syed Mohammad to Vijay, no run, dropped, but if he had held on it would have been the catch of the tournament. Very full and on middle, Vijay whips it back really hard and Syed has to arrest his follow through and dive rapidly to the right as the ball shoots along very low. He gets a hand to it, but the ball hits turf immediately after.

Syed Mohammad to Vijay, 2 runs, yorks Vijay on leg stump and he works it away through midwicket. They get two more. Don't ask me how.

Chennai Super Kings 103/0   M Vijay 52* (31b 2x4 3x6)

Aravind to Vijay, 1 wide, short ball, slips well down the leg side. Wide, almost on two counts.

Aravind to Vijay, SIX, with his short hair cut, unkempt stubble and similar build, Vijay does remind me of Dhoni. He's hitting sixes just as well as that man, today, but with a little more finesse. Length from Aravind. Poor, poor length. Vijay reaches out and deposits him well over cow corner.

Aravind to Vijay, 2 runs, this time he goes off side, lofting him cheekily over the infield for two more.

Aravind to Vijay, 1 run, on the pads, Aravind is all over the place in this over. Vijay whips through midwicket, and thankfully for RCB they have protection there.

Aravind to Vijay, SIX, this is slaughter, and Aravind the lamb is walking into it. He's serving up freebies in Vijay's hitting arc and Vijay's swinging away without a fuss. Another short of length ball that comes in and sits up like an early Christmas gift. Vijay smacks it off the front foot over midwicket. This is too easy to be true for Vijay.

Chennai Super Kings 121/0   M Vijay 67* (35b 2x4 5x6)

Khan to Vijay, FOUR, Bangalore have still not woken up. Short of a length outside off stump, Vijay moves into position and steers with a smartly opened face, perfectly in between point and short third. The former reacts slowly, and the latter almost doesn't react. Four more.

Khan to Vijay, 2 runs, on the pads, Vijay gets it away into the leg side for a couple more.

Khan to Vijay, 1 run, short of a length this time, from round the stumps and looking to handcuff Vijay, but he manages to work it to short fine leg for one more.

Khan to Vijay, 1 run, Vijay quietly tucks a length ball through square leg for one. The batsmen are tired and ask for the time-out at the first opportunity. The smarts.

Chennai Super Kings 131/0   M Vijay 75* (39b 3x4 5x6)

Vettori to Vijay, FOUR, inside out, easy as you like. Vijay advances down the track and opens up the off side, and then puts the wrists into work to scatter Vettori through cover point.

Vettori to Vijay, 1 run, moves away again, this time Vettori follows him with a short ball and Vijay mistimes a pull over the infield. That kind of night.

Vettori to Vijay, no run, Vijay plays the first dot ball since Syed failed to hold on to a tough return chance. He looks to swing Vettori through the leg side, but is early into the shot as Vettori slows it up.

Chennai Super Kings 143/0   M Vijay 80* (42b 4x4 5x6)

Syed Mohammad to Vijay, SIX, now that shot, he's played just like his captain would have. Syed throws it well up on middle and off, not many batsmen would manage to get under such balls. You need to stay right back and generate bat speed from well behind, with strong wrists. Vijay did just that and whiplashed it over long-on.

Syed Mohammad to Vijay, 3 runs, run out appeal, referred, but Vijay seems in. He works Syed through midwicket and Hussey hustles him to come in for the second. Vijay makes it, and will be happy that it is referred. Gives him a breather. Overthrow taken, by the way.

Chennai Super Kings 159/0   M Vijay 89* (44b 4x4 6x6)

Vettori to Vijay, 2 runs, another couple. Short ball on the hips, Vijay goes back and places it carefully and softly to deep midwicket for two more. He can barely run now, but had enough time now.

Vettori to Vijay, 1 run, Vijay pushes into the leg side for one more. He is completely knackered. Eight more for a ton. That should keep him going.

Vettori to Vijay, 1 run, too full and straight from Vettori, Vijay works it away square for one more.

Vettori to Vijay, no run, Vijay jumps out again, gets too close to the pitch and dead bats it. If he hadn't, would have been stumped by miles. He's too tired to contemplate getting back into the crease.

Chennai Super Kings 167/1   M Vijay 93* (48b 4x4 6x6)

Khan to Vijay, 2 runs, short ball at 133 kph, Vijay seems to have all the time he needs today. He waits and pulls between midwicket and deep square leg, and has enough time to come back for the second.

Chennai Super Kings 172/1   M Vijay 95* (49b 4x4 6x6)

Gayle to Vijay, no run, Vijay attempts a reverse sweep, Gayle smartly slips it down the leg side and Vijay can't do anything. Not a wide, and I think rightly so. George Binoy agrees. Sriram Veera disagrees.

Gayle to Vijay, 1 leg bye, again spears it on leg stump as Vijay looks to move and heave. Runs away off the pad to the leg side.

Chennai Super Kings 180/1   M Vijay 95* (51b 4x4 6x6)

Aravind to Vijay, OUT, tomorrow morning, Vijay will wake up and kick himself for giving away a century that was there for the taking. But for a man who has been barely able to stand on his feet for the last 30 minutes or so, 95 is not bad at all. That too in a final. Aravind keeps it full and outside off, Vijay looks to go big over the off side but toe-ends it to cover inside the circle. End of a stunningly sublime innings.

M Vijay c Vettori b Aravind 95 (52b 4x4 6x6) SR: 182.69

Chennai Super Kings 188/2   M Vijay 95 (52b 4x4 6x6)
